Ondanks zijn voorbode naam is deze vallei een van de meest opwindende plekken van het land. Natuurlijk is het de heetste plek ter wereld, maar je zult snel zien dat de hitte het gedoe waard is! Opmerking : De tour is meer dan 80 mijl lang, omvat meer dan 55 audioverhalen en duurt ongeveer 4 - 5 uur om te voltooien. Nieuw. Levenslange toegang zonder vervaldatum. Gebruik het altijd, op elke reis, zo vaak als je wilt. Belangrijk : Download de Tour Gids App by Action en uw Death Valley audiotour voordat u het park betreedt. Mobiele service kan zeer beperkt zijn in Death Valley, dus download de tour van tevoren via sterke WiFi of mobiele data. Eenmaal gedownload werken de GPS-kaart en audioverhalen offline terwijl u rijdt.
Terwijl de beroemde Gold Rush een enorme toestroom van hoopvolken naar Death Valley bracht, was het niet het goud dat de vallei op de kaart hield. In hun verwoede zoektocht naar dat gewaardeerde metaal stuitten mijnwerkers op iets dat net zo waardevol is: borax.
Dante's View biedt een adembenemend uitzicht op de golvende zoutvlakten beneden en is een fenomenale plek voor fotografie of gewoon om de zon achter het Panamint-gebergte te zien ondergaan. Dit uitzicht torent meer dan 5000 voet boven het Badwater Basin uit, aan de vooravond van de Black Mountain Range.
Dit is Twenty Mule Team Canyon, genoemd naar die iconische wagontreinen die ik net noemde. Deze kronkelende weg biedt een werkelijk uitstekend woestijnlandschap terwijl je slingert tussen saffraankleurige heuvels en kleurrijke badlands. Als je het in de vroege ochtend of rond zonsondergang bezoekt, word je getrakteerd op oogverblindende kleuren terwijl het oranje zonlicht de dramatische rotswanden schildert.
Zabriskie Point, genoemd naar een 19e-eeuwse borax-baron, over wie je zo hoort, is gemakkelijk een van de meest iconische locaties van Death Valley. Vanaf deze baars op het Amargosa-gebergte kun je echt zien hoe erosie deze vallei heeft gevormd. Direct daaronder zijn de badlands. Voorbij die, veel lichter van kleur, zie je de oogverblindende zoutvlakten. Het wordt allemaal omlijst door het kolossale Panamint-gebergte daarachter.
Hier in het Furnace Creek Visitor Center vind je snacks, water en toiletten, maar nog belangrijker... een thermometer! Net buiten de ingang is een grote digitale uitlezing die je precies vertelt hoe warm het is hier op een van de laagste punten van Death Valley. Zorg ervoor dat je een foto maakt die ernaast staat om je vrienden en familie thuis te choqueren.
Vanaf hier heeft u toegang tot het Golden Canyon-pad. Dit heen en weer pad is in totaal ongeveer 3 mijl en duurt ongeveer een uur om te voltooien. Dit populaire parcours trekt jaarlijks veel bezoekers, dus je zult zeker een paar medewandelaars tegenkomen tijdens je reis!
Die glooiende heuvel rechts van je heet Mars Hill. Als je erover nadenkt, is de naam logisch! Een groot deel van Death Valley doet denken aan het dorre, levenloze oppervlak van de planeet Mars. De diepe okerstenen, vreemde rotsformaties en grote stoffige vlakten voelen zeker niet thuis op aarde.
Dit doek is beschilderd door vulkanische afzettingen van ijzeroxiden en chloriet. Terwijl de badlands van Zabriskie Point grotendeels werden gekleurd door verschillende sedimentaire afzettingen, danken deze rotsen hun glans aan een totaal ander tijdperk van Death Valley's geologie.
Dit is de beste plek om het Artist's Palette te bekijken, een verzameling wild kleurrijke rotsen die eruitzien alsof ze onmogelijk natuurlijk kunnen zijn. En toch zijn ze!
Deze weg is ruig en onverhard, dus wees voorzichtig tijdens het rijden. Het leidt naar een fascinerend landschap dat bekend staat als Devils Golf Course. Als de meeste mensen aan golfbanen denken, denken ze aan groene glooiende heuvels, glad onderhouden gras en het geluid van vogelgezang. Maar Death Valley biedt zoiets niet.
Dit is Badwater Basin, de thuisbasis van zoutvlakten die zich over maar liefst 200 vierkante mijl over de woestijn verspreiden. Op 282 voet onder de zeespiegel is dit bassin het laagste punt in Noord-Amerika.

Make sure to follow the directions & download the app and the tour before you get to the park because there is no service anywhere…as long as you do that, it works exactly as advertised.

The Death Valley National Park Self-Guided Audio Driving Tour really enhanced our experience while visiting the park. Was like having a tour guide in your car offering details of your drive and visit that you would totally miss if you were just driving through without a narrator. Must say, it was a little confusing to get it started but once we hit the park's entrance, almost like magic all our problems disappeared and it was on auto play for the rest of our drive. It was very difficult to get started and after we stopped for lunch, we couldn't get it back. When it worked it was accurate.

On the drive from Reno to Las Vegas, I pass by all the time. Had to plan a detour this trip, well worth it, even in summer. Most visitors were from foreign countries this time of year. I heard a lot of French. Stayed at a great spot, Stovepipe Wells. Pool is open til midnight, has a restaurant, bar, store, gas, all you need in this desolate area of the world. I purchased an annual parks pass because there is so much more to see and I will be back.

Downloaded app. It showed route and interest spots, but I got no vocal. So of limited use. Ended up turning it off as most points of interest had signs

There is unfortunately only very limited mobile availability there! Nevertheless, the app knew very well where you were...unfortunately the navigation did not work for me!!!
Johannes, I’m really glad my app was able to track your location even without mobile service—Death Valley is definitely a challenge when it comes to signal. The good news is that the tour works entirely offline if downloaded in advance. I’m sorry to hear that the navigation didn’t function as expected; this can sometimes happen, but relaunching the app can help in such cases. I definitely found this useful. Download the Death Valley app BEFORE you arrive and purchase the tour. Download which tour starts at your arrival gate, again before you have the bad cell service in the valley. When you turn on the tour, it provides a 2 minute blurb of interesting history and travelogue every few minutes, triggered automatically by your GPS location. You can stop whenever you want, and just restart as needed. You can go back later and relisten to segments or start a new section. I also recommend the free National Park Service app as a companion. It has good descriptions of hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, hours, road closure alerts.
