Wandeltocht door de stad Podgorica
Beschrijving
Een stadswandeling die u kennis laat maken met Podgorica, de hoofdstad van Montenegro, en het administratieve, culturele en economische centrum. Het wijdere gebied wordt al bewoond sinds het stenen tijdperk, maar de stedelijke geschiedenis begint met de komst van de Romeinen in de 2e eeuw voor Christus. Podgorica dateert uit de periode van Illyrisch-Romeinse oorlogen en stond altijd op het kruispunt van Griekse reizigers, Romeinse legionairs, Byzantijnse boodschappers, Servische edellieden, Venetiaanse kooplieden, Turkse indringers, Montenegrijnse krijgers ... Meer dan 70 bombardementen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog hebben veel gebouwen en monumenten uit de voorgaande eeuwen weggevaagd. Tijdens onze 90 minuten durende wandeling zullen we enkele van deze overgebleven sporen van de vorige eeuwen passeren, maar zullen we ook kijken naar de manier waarop de stad werd herbouwd tijdens de communistische periode en in de latere decennia.

Ons trefpunt bevindt zich in het centrum van Podgorica - Onafhankelijkheidsplein (het voormalige Plein van de Republiek), bij de fontein. In geval van regen zal de gids gepositioneerd worden door de Société Générale Bank, onder de dakgoot rondom het plein. We passeren het gemeentehuis, stoppen even voor het standbeeld van Marko Miljanov, een van de beroemde generaals en schrijvers uit het einde van de 19e eeuw.
Vanaf de Bokeska-straat passeren we het Nationale Theater en gaan we verder richting het standbeeld van Petar II Petrovic Njegos, een beroemde prins-bisschop, schrijver en filosoof.
We vervolgen onze reis via een van de bruggen over de Moraca-rivier, die door Podgorica stroomt.
Onze tour leidt ons over de Moraca-rivier, via een van de voetgangersbruggen, en vanaf hier hebben we een uitstekend zicht op de Millennium Bridge, een van de herkenbare bezienswaardigheden van Podgorica.
We zullen ook een korte stop maken bij het standbeeld van Vladimir Vysotsky, een Russische dichter, zanger en songwriter, die jong stierf, maar een tijdje in Podgorica woonde.
We steken de rivier de Moraca weer over, op de Blazo Jovanovic-brug en blijven richting Sastavci (of Skaline), aan de samenvloeiing van de rivieren Ribnica en Moraca.
Sastavci of Skaline is een zeer pittoreske site, maar weliswaar ongeschonden. Boven de samenvloeiing staan nauwelijks zichtbare ruïnes van het fort van Ribnica. Deze staan bekend als Nemanjin grad, omdat hier Stefan Nemanja was geboren die later Nemanjic-dynastie oprichtte. We zullen een oude pittoreske stenen brug oversteken op weg naar Stara Varos, de oudste bewaard gebleven wijk van Podgorica, die dateert uit de Ottomaanse overheersing.
Bij Stara Varos stoppen we even bij de Starodoganjska-moskee, gebouwd in de 15e eeuw en lange tijd onderhouden door de handelaars uit de nabijgelegen winkels.
Sahat Kula (de klokkentoren) is een van de belangrijkste herkenningspunten van Podgorica. Het staat aan de rand van de Stara Varos, tegenover de socialistische flatgebouwen aan de overkant van de straat. Gebouwd in de 18e eeuw door Adzi Pasha Osmanagic.
Op de terugweg passeren we het Koning Nikola-monument, een vrij standaard heroïsch ruitermonument, gelegen in King's Park. Het werd opgericht in 2006, op de Dag van Podgorica's Bevrijding in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, op een plateau tegenover het nationale parlement.
Gelegen op de hoek van de Njegoseva-straat, stelt het de beroemde Russische dichter Pushkin voor die poëzie voorleest aan zijn vrouw Natalija Gonchareva. Na een korte foto stop bij dit monument, keren we terug naar het Onafhankelijkheidsplein.

- Dit is een gemakkelijke stadswandeling, maar Podgorica kan in de zomer erg warm zijn en een klein deel van de tour leidt naar straten van kasseien, dus comfortabel schoeisel wordt geadviseerd). De tour werkt bijna onder alle weersomstandigheden, kleed u alstublieft op de juiste manier aan.

Our guide Slavko Gusak was absolutely incredible. His wealth of knowledge, use of the English language, and demeanor was excellent. He could answer all our questions with ease. We were in Podgorica for 1 day in transit and wanted to learn more about Montenegro unfortunately our tour was cancelled due to lack of numbers so we had the option of paying a little more for a private tour. Definitely worth it and glad this happened so we had our private tour. Our guide met us at our hotel and we took a leisurely walk into the city . Stopping to tell us about each area, history, culture along the way. We then asked for recommendation on where to eat and we had an amazing fresh fish brunch in a very tradition taverna. Slavko gave us a great walking tour in the city of Podgorica. He started with the introduction that took us back thousands years ago and he explained the city history till today. We visited Podgorica this April and decided to book a tour at the last moment. It proved to be a good decision as we had an excellent local guide who took us around the town and told us the story of the city which we wouldn't be able to discover on our own. We got a recommendation for local pubs and restaurants. We also booked the same agency for their Kotor tour the next day and it was just as perfect.
