Merzouga is een klein Marokkaans stadje in de Sahara, vlakbij de Algerijnse grens. Het staat bekend als een toegangspoort tot Erg Chebbi, een enorme uitgestrektheid van zandduinen ten noorden van de stad. Ten westen van Merzouga ligt Dayet Srji, een seizoensgebonden zoutmeer dat in de zomer vaak droog staat. Als het vol is, trekt het een breed scala aan trek- en woestijnvogels aan, waaronder woestijnzangers, Egyptische nachtzwaluwen en, af en toe, flamingo's
