Het Zwarte Colosseum, dat wacht om ontdekt te worden onder de moderne stad!
Één van de meest sfeervolle plekken in Catania. Een oude lavagrot, die in de Griekse tijd werd gebruikt als waterreservoir en later door de Romeinen als catacombe. Volgens de overlevering vond hier de eerste begrafenis van Sint Agatha plaats, waarna er al in 262 een klein kerkje werd gebouwd. Tegenwoordig zijn in de crypte nog steeds de restanten te vinden van eeuwenoude fresco's en decoraties die rechtstreeks in de rotsen zijn uitgehouwen.
De Amenano, een mysterieuze ondergrondse rivier die slingert onder het historische centrum van Catania, stroomde oorspronkelijk naar de oppervlakte en voedde het meer van Nicito. Door de eeuwen heen hebben uitbarstingen, aardbevingen en oorlogen niet alleen de stadsplanning van de stad veranderd, maar ook de natuurlijke uitstraling. We bezoeken een suggestieve glijdende grot waarin nog steeds een aftakking van de rivier stroomt

Matilda was wonderful and knowledgeable guide. Her love of Catania and her job really showed through on our tour! I would highly recommend this tour and especially on a Sunday as one of the sites is only open on that day.

Excellent guide who used his experience as an archeologist to really bring the tour alive. As well as very interesting information about the places we saw, he also shared with us the tastes of local history through food and drink that he bought for us at local venders. I would thoroughly recommend this tour for a real flavour of Catania

You will see underground Roman amphitheater which will is very impressive. But could do this in your own for a 4 euro entrance fee. Mathilda was very nice and knowledgeable but there are placards that explain everything. The other 2 places were caves nothing overly impressive and 1 euro entrance fees. We were treated to a typical Sicilian street food and water plus a granita type drink. Definitely not worth the cost of the tour

Underground Catania was the best way to experience and learn about the history, architecture, and culture of the city. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Catania for the first time!

It was a very knowledgeable tour guide who had a lot of passion of the subject, which we really enjoyed! Mathilde was great at answering all questions and always pointed at the most interesting aspects of the buildings/caves…etc. it is not a tour fully underground, but you’re visiting three separate underground locations. It is a great tour with a fantastic tour guide! Very highly recommend!
