De glinsterende blauwe wateren van het Titicacameer zijn de thuisbasis van de beroemde, kunstmatige drijvende eilanden van Uros. Deze eilanden en hun woningen, die dateren uit de pre-Inca-tijd, zijn volledig gemaakt van totorariet, een inheemse lisdodde plant die in het meer groeit. Maak tijdens een rondleiding kennis met de bewoners die een kleine gemeenschap hebben gevormd en leer hoe deze eilanden overeind blijven. Bezoek 's middags het eiland Amantani en ervaar de unieke cultuur van de lokale bevolking.

We halen u 's ochtends tussen 0645 en 0700 op bij uw hotel in het historische centrum van Puno. Voordat we aan boord gaan van de motorboot naar Uros Island, zullen we een korte stop maken bij de bootpier, waar u wat snacks en flessenwater kunt kopen. Zodra je je in de boot zou vestigen, zou een lokale muzikant je verwelkomen met een Andes-folkloristische muziek. Onze gids introduceert zichzelf en de kapitein van de boot voordat hij u een kort overzicht geeft van de route van de dag op het hoogste bevaarbare meer van de wereld, het Titicacameer. Onze eerste stop is op de iconische drijvende eilanden Uros. Tijdens de reis van het vasteland naar een van de Uros-eilanden zie je totoraplanten die groeien op het Titicacameer. Deze vormen de basisbron van voedsel en tegelijkertijd dienen ze als een onderhoudssysteem dat de Uros moeten hebben om het bestaan van de eilanden te bestendigen Terwijl de boot zou aanmeren, zouden lokale vrouwen gekleed in de plaatselijke kleding een warm welkom heten in de plaats die ze thuis noemen. Het hoofd van het eiland zou dan laten zien hoe ze deze eilanden bouwen met behulp van totora-planten en een paar woorden delen in hun moedertaal (Aymara). Inwoners hier staan bekend om hun handwerk, dus je kunt er wat kopen als je dat zou willen. Je hebt dan de mogelijkheid om met de traditionele totora rietboot (10 zolen) naar het hoofdeiland Uros te varen. Indien gewenst, kunt u uw paspoort hier als souvenir laten stempelen. Vanaf hier zullen we onze boottocht naar Taquile-eilanden beginnen. Je kunt naar het open dek op het bovenste niveau van de boot lopen en een paar foto's maken van de drijvende eilanden waar je doorheen zou varen.
Het kleine heuveleiland Taquile, dat de groene wateren van het Titicacameer in Peru doorbreekt, heeft een gestage industrie van breiwerk gecreëerd, dat wordt gebreid door de mannen van de gemeenschap. Taquile is de thuisbasis van een Quechua-bevolking van 2.000 mensen, voornamelijk boeren, vissers en vooral beroemde wevers. In tegenstelling tot de vaak tragische traditionele kijk op brei- en textielwerk als het domein van vrouwen, zijn het echter de mannen van Taquile Island die veel van het delicate draadwerk doen. Het knutselen is verdeeld tussen weven en breien; vrouwen doen het weven, terwijl het breien het werk van de man is. We stoppen voor de lunch in een lokaal restaurant. Na de lunch rond 14.30 uur gaat u aan boord van de boot terug naar Puno. Om ongeveer 04.30 uur 's avonds zal de boot aanmeren in de aanlegsteiger van Puno. We zullen u bij uw aankomst ontmoeten en u terugbrengen naar uw hotel in het historische centrum van de stad.

We did this full day trip to Lake Titicaca and it was just perfect. From the guide service to transport, everything was smooth. The locals were welcoming and friendly. We even toured the local home on the floating islands. It was a perfect day trip.

While the tour was amazing I think there should be more transparency on what occurs on the tour. My travel companion was having a little difficulty with the altitude, so we were taking it easy. I booked this tour thinking it was a cruise, you go to the floating islands, have lunch and then go back. Nowhere in the description did it say to have lunch you have to hike 1km up a hill (it may be further). If this was in the description I would have cancelled but instead we were left with the choice of climbing a hill with my companion sucking on oxygen or sit on a boat for 2 hours waiting. As I said previously the floating islands were wonderful but I think the walk to the lunch should be mentioned for travellers to make an informed choice.

Pick up was on time , we had a great guide and boat driver. The guide gave us so much information about the history and how the islands were built , the wildlife etc and the lake . The island we visited was great and had a female chief - impressive. They showed us through using models and materials how the islands are constructed. The lunch was delicious and they catered for my vegan diet . Very good day .

This review isn’t aimed directly at the tour company but rather the experience on the islands. We arrived at Uros island and my partner and I found it to be rather uncomfortable. You are ushered into the local’s homes, they dress you in their clothes and then proceed to guilt trip you into buying their stuff. We also were told each island only has 1 visit every 3 weeks to further guilt trip you but upon research we found this was definitely false!! We found it to be extremely inauthentic and choreographed for your money. On top of that, we were directed onto their boat where they take you to another island. Yet once you are sat on the boat and the boat has left the island, they come around collecting money from you which isn’t optional! It is complete manipulation. The second island is much better but still very staged and it makes me sad that the people now completely rely on tourism to live. Definitely do not pay £42 either as you can get it for 30soles the day before at the port in Puno :)

A big thanks to our guide, Abel for making this trip a memorable one. The tour company was very well organized and easy to reach out to. Miluska, helped me plan the tour and provided all information to plan everything smoothly. The price included all admission fee and the group size was very small, around 12 people. Highly recommend for someone interested in knowing more about local traditions and customs and doing this on the way in or out of Puno to Bolivia.
