Misschien wel een van de meest authentieke ervaringen die elke voedselliefhebber in Thessaloniki kan opdoen, is een bezoek aan de historische open markten van de stad. De sfeer, de mensen en de lokale lekkernijen zullen je belonen!
Modiano is een van de meest traditionele markten van Thessaloniki. Het ligt in het hart van de stad en maakt al zo'n 80 jaar deel uit van het leven van de Thessalonicenzen. De bouw begon in 1922 en eindigde in 1930 door architect Eli Modiano. Afkomstig uit een gerenommeerde joodse (Sefardische) familie van Thessaloniki, was Eli de zoon van de bankier Jacob (Yako) Modiano. Hij studeerde architectuur in Parijs, Frankrijk en keerde terug naar Thessaloniki, waar hij enkele van de belangrijkste gebouwen van de stad creëerde, waaronder de Modiano-markt.
Het Athonosplein in het centrum van de stad, de hele dag door bruisend van leven, is een geliefde plek voor zowel Thessalonicenzen als toeristen. Hier speelt voeding en voeding de hoofdrol. Je vindt er specerijen, alle soorten thee, noten, groenten en fruit, vis, delicatessen, maar ook kleine boetiekjes met kleding, handgemaakte accessoires en decoratieartikelen. Bovendien wordt uw aandacht meteen getrokken door de geuren van het heerlijke eten van de traditionele tavernes van het plein! U kunt er zowel tijdens de lunch als 's avonds van genieten, af en toe begeleid door Griekse livemuziek. Als je bovendien kennis wilt maken met de traditionele kant van het Athonosplein, bezoek dan de pittoreske kleine winkeltjes die handgemaakt vlechtwerk en kleine houten meubels verkopen, gemaakt door de laatst overgebleven bekwame ambachtslieden.
Louloudadika is een klein deel van het historische stadscentrum met de straten van Komninon, Frangon en Vas. Herakliou, die zijn naam ontleent aan de oude buitenbloemisten die er waren. Helaas blijven er vandaag maar 4 doorlopen. In de jaren 50 waren er 11 winkels met allerlei soorten bloemen en hun bekendheid bereikte de provinciesteden.

Had an amazing tour led by guide Nikos. Immediately felt comfortable touring the city and learned so much about the food, history and culture! Come hungry. Like very hungry. I was so full by the end 🤣 nikos went above and beyond showing me the metro system and the history behind it!
A great combination of the flavors and tastes of Thessaloniki while learning about the historical context of the food and region. Our tour guide was friendly, accommodating, and very knowledgeable! We had a fantastic walking food tour of Thessaloniki ! Nikos was a very interesting, informative & funny host. We learned a lot about the history of the city & its food. The tour was very good with lots of information and conversation. The two hours was just about right and the distance not to long on what was a hot day. We’ll be going back to many of the places we visited.

Nico was an amazing guide. This tour included plenty of local foods as well as a great history of the area and tour of the city. It felt like spending the afternoon with a friend. Would highly recommend this tour.

We had a really great, varied and delicious food tour. We also learned about backgrounds of Thessaloniki and the tour guide was very nice and pleasant.
Our guide Niksos really did his homework checking to make sure he took us to all fresh, handmade bakeries and restaurants and every dish we sampled was top notch! Fresh filo dough rolled by hand for the spanikopita, the bougata was so yummy and every other sweet treat was amazing. Greek coffee was very interesting - not sure if I’ll will give up my morning Nespresso for it but enjoyed it just the same. Very enjoyable tour - highly recommend.
