De voormalige kerk van Sant’Antonio Abate werd gebouwd in 1330. Het wordt “voormalige kerk” genoemd omdat het niet meer wordt gebruikt voor religieuze functies. Nadat de kerk tijdens de bombardementen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in 1943 zwaar beschadigd was geraakt en vervolgens herbouwd, verloor ze haar rol als plaats van eredienst. Er is een gaaf verhaal gerelateerd aan deze kerk: laten we het ontdekken!
Het Paleis van de Hertogen van St. Stephen is een van de beste voorbeelden van Normandische architectuur bewaard gebleven in Taormina. Gebouwd tussen het midden van de 13e eeuw en het begin van de 14e eeuw, was het paleis een integraal onderdeel van de middeleeuwse muren die het historische centrum van de stad afbakenden.

De kathedraal van Taormina, oorspronkelijk gebouwd in de 13e eeuw op de ruïnes van een kleine kerk gewijd aan San Nicola di Bari, werd herbouwd en uitgebreid op verschillende momenten, aanvankelijk in de 15e eeuw, later in de 16e en uiteindelijk in de 18e eeuw. Laten we het ontdekken!
Corso Umberto is de hoofdstraat van Taormina, die zich uitstrekt tussen twee bogen aan de uiteinden: de boog van Poort Messina in het noorden en de boog van Poort Catania in het zuiden. Een prachtige wandeling!
IX April Square ligt in het hart van Corso Umberto en wordt beschouwd als een van de meest prestigieuze plaatsen in Taormina. Dit ruime plein is over de hele wereld beroemd om het spectaculaire uitzicht dat het biedt: van het kenmerkende profiel van de Etna, tot het uitzicht op de baai van Giardini Naxos, tot aan de heuvel die het Griekse theater herbergt.
De kerk van de Madonna della Rocca staat op een steile berg met uitzicht op Taormina, vlakbij het Saraceense kasteel. Het dankt zijn naam aan de eigenschap dat het direct op de levende rots is gebouwd.
Het Arabisch-Normandische kasteel van Taormina staat ook bekend als het kasteel van Monte Tauro, omdat het op de top van de gelijknamige rots staat. Een geweldige plek om te bezoeken!
Een odeon is een type openbaar gebouw uit de Grieks-Romeinse oudheid, voornamelijk ontworpen om muzikale, theatrale of oratorische evenementen te organiseren van een kleinere schaal dan openluchttheaters. De term komt uit het Oudgrieks en betekent “een plek bedoeld om te zingen”. Het odeon van Taormina is een van de weinige die op Sicilië wordt gevonden. Laten we het ontdekken!
Corvaja Palace is een van de belangrijkste monumenten van Taormina. De bouw dateert uit de Arabische tijd, namelijk de 11e eeuw, toen de eerste kubusvormige toren werd opgericht. In de 14e en 15e eeuw werd het paleis uitgebreid en kreeg het zijn huidige uiterlijk, met een fusie van Arabische, Normandische, gotische, Catalaanse en Chiaramonte architectonische elementen.
Het Griekse theater, ook wel bekend als het Oude Theater, dateert waarschijnlijk uit de 3e eeuw voor Christus, tijdens het bewind van Hiëro II. Meer dan 100.000 kubieke meter rots werd handmatig verwijderd om het theater te bouwen. De Romeinen hebben het gebouw later gerenoveerd en uitgebreid met kolommen, beelden en ingenieuze architectonische oplossingen. Een geweldige plek die je gaat verkennen!
Trevelyan Park, ook bekend als Municipal Villa of Taormina, werd halverwege de 19e eeuw gecreëerd dankzij het testament van Lady Florence Trevelyan, een Engelse edelvrouw die werd opgevoed aan het hof van koningin Victoria, nicht van haar grootmoeder, Lady Maria Wilson.
De eerste historische sporen van Isola Bella gaan terug tot 1806, toen Ferdinand I van Bourbon, koning van de twee Siciliën, het schonk aan de gemeente Taormina. Vervolgens werd het eiland rond 1890 aangekocht door de Engelse edelvrouw Florence Trevelyan voor een bedrag van 14.000 lire. Laten we meer ontdekken!

HORRIBLE. The description says “walking tour with audio from a local” but what they don’t tell you is ALL you get is the audio. The entry tickets are NOT included. I was traveling with my daughter, husband and her boyfriend to celebrate her college graduation and I purchased 4 tix for our last day to tour the theatre in Taormina. We waited in a VERY long line due to the cruise ship crowd (which was fine - Taormina was lovely and everyone should see it!), but when we got to the gate to enter, the workers didn’t recognize the tix or let us in with them. It was very frustrating. I requested a refund since I didn’t get to use the tix but they were zero help and blamed me. They need to be more clear so people understand the “walking tour” doesn’t actually include the entry to the stadium. I use Viator often and I have never had an issue, but this was beyond frustrating.

Interesting tour, and handy to be able to proceed at ones own pace and timing. However, the commentary was quite brief, with little detail, poorly pronounced, in an inauthentic, American, probably AI voice. In the end, it was never going to replace a knowledgeable tour guide with whom one could interact.

OMG we never got connected to internet in Taormina. Connections kept cutting in & out especially at 1st stop. I contacted operator for assistance changed browser as instructed & still no connection. We ended up figuring out itinerary on our own without audio or digital copy. Check internet connection before purchasing. I know it is inexpensive but we were really looking forward to at least getting some history about each site. Very disappointing. I even tried Viator helpline for assistance.
