Genesteld in het hart van de Alpilles is het een van de meest betoverende dorpen van de regio. Omgeven door dramatische kalkstenen heuvels, oude olijfgaarden en velden badend in het buitengewone Provençaalse licht heeft kunstenaars, schrijvers en reizigers lang geboeid. Wandel door het elegante historische centrum, charmante pleinen, ambachtelijke boetiekjes, eeuwenoude stenen huizen. Bezoek het Monastère Saint-Paul de Mausole, waar Vincent van Gogh zich in 1889 vrijwillig toeliet en enkele van zijn meest gevierde meesterwerken creëerde. Ontdek onderweg opmerkelijk bewaarde Romeinse monumenten, pittoreske Provençaalse straatjes en de landschappen die een van de grootste kunstenaars uit de geschiedenis inspireerden.

Het amfitheater is het belangrijkste monument van de voormalige Romeinse kolonie dat we zouden moeten bewonderen, zo'n tweeduizend jaar na de bouw ervan. De architectuur is volledig ontworpen met betrekking tot zijn roeping van plaats tot geweldige shows, die een groot publiek herbergen. Bij hun eerste opkomst konden de tribunes ongeveer 21.000 kijkers ontvangen, werden stroompjes slim georganiseerd door een netwerk van deuren, galerijen en trappen, op verschillende verdiepingen. In het begin van de middeleeuwen, een stad dichtbij en versterkt, werd het gebouw geruimd alleen in de XIX eeuw. Hijzelf dan voor een deel, zijn oorspronkelijke functie, inclusief het stierenvechten, die hem zijn huidige gemeenschappelijke benaming van "arena's" opleverde. Het is vandaag het monument van de meest bezochte stad, die het beeld van Arles in de wereld brengt. Met een grote as van 136 meter lang en een kleine as van 107 meter, het amfitheater van Arles is iets groter dan dat van Nîmes en de 20e gerangschikt onder die van de Romeinse wereld. Het heeft de vorm van een ellips. De façade omvat twee niveaus van zestig halfronde bogen, gescheiden door de landhoofden, massieve rechthoekige doorsnede. Een bredere opening wijst naar de uiteinden van de twee assen van het monument. De hoofdingang was niet Noord zoals vandaag, maar het Westen waar we de overblijfselen kunnen zien van een trap die over de stad uitkijkt. De cavea, ruimte gereserveerd voor toeschouwers, omvatte 34 tribunes, verdeeld in vier reeksen: de maeniana, waar kijkers verdeeld waren volgens naar hun sociale status. Naar schatting is de initiële capaciteit van het monument voor ongeveer 21.000 mensen.
Dit uitzonderlijke klooster dateert uit de 12e eeuw en grenst aan de kerk.
Deze uitzonderlijke voormalige kathedraal, gebouwd tussen de 12e en 15e eeuw, toont enkele van de beste voorbeelden van romaanse beeldhouwkunst.
Een bezoek aan het 12e eeuwse voormalige klooster Saint Paul de Mausole blijft vandaag de dag een psychiatrische gezondheidsinstelling. In de voormalige kapittelhuizen en het Romaanse trappenhuis is een permanente tentoonstelling te zien van werken die te koop zijn, gemaakt door de patiënten van kunsttherapiestudio Valetudo. Hier verbleef Vincent Van Gogh iets meer dan een jaar en tijdens het bezoek ervaar je de uitzichten die hij zag en schilderde.
In het hart van de Alpilles - Saint Rémy de Provence is een van de must-see plaatsen. Omgeven door de dramatische achtergrond van de bergen, oude straatjes omzoomd met oude huizen. Geboorteplaats van Nostradamus en op woensdag speelt het dorp gastheer voor een van de beste straatmarkten in de Provence. Andere dagen is het dorp levendig met vele kleine onafhankelijke winkels en galeries.

This tour was the focal point of our trip and Laurent provided an excellent day. We started in the morning with Monastere St Paul de Mausole. Experiencing where Vincent van Gogh lived and painted for a year of his life was incredibly meaningful. We also delighted to discover the Glanum archeological site nearby and the charming ville Saint-Remy de Provence with beautiful shops. Arles was fabulous, the Romanesque Saint-Trophime, the amphitheatre, and gelato (thank you Laurent!) All of this gave us Roman vibes in the South of France and we loved every minute.
Thank you for your confidence in us to organise a series of experiences for you all. It was super fun and I especially enjoyed the many threads of conversation throughout the day coupled with the beauty and history of this exceptional region with so much history and connections from the Greeks and the Romans to artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Cézanne etc etc. I'm so happy you enjoyed your time here and hope you will keep us on the return to list in the future. A day in Provence with Christopher is like a dream you want to keep having over and over again. There was perfect communication even before we met...with a great solution as how to see everything on my wish list. Somehow between Arles & Saint- Remy we managed to view magnificent Roman ruins, the street where Nostradamus lived, and where Van Gogh underwent treatment as he continued to paint. And the smell of the lavender just added to the mood. Besides being charming, intellectual, personable and all around delightful, Christopher was very attentive to my energy since I was still recovering from a cold and not feeling at all like myself. It truly was like being shown the in's & out's of the most charming cities by a close, personal friend. I only wish we had more time to spend (and that I had felt better). Nice walk through Arles. we stayed after the walk to see other sites that were not included and were glad we did. The formal tour is minimal, at best.

We had a wonderful half-day private tour of Arles with Christopher from OohProvence. He showed us, and described the history of, the major sights in the city and also some of the off-the-beaten-track side streets of this charming town. Fenella & Miranda, I so enjoyed our tour together. Arles is a very interesting, perhaps lesser know town. I think the fact that you managed a visit to Avignon & Aix-en-Provence coupled with a 'dusting' of Luberon villages and the Camargue alongside Arles - you managed a lot in a relatively short space of time. How nice it is to stroll "in" Arles. Narrow alleys or you should not hesitate to look up. Monuments at "every corner", nice little restaurants. Really time flies too fast and we'll have to come back to it.

A very nice city, but... the center district where arenas and ancient theater is nice but the city is dirty very dirty, whereas there are beautiful typical shops. damage
