De Route van de Sillar, is een enorme steengroeve van sillar (steen van vulkanische oorsprong), die spectaculaire kloven vormt, vergelijkbaar met die van Petra in Jordanië, je kunt ook rotstekeningen zien en de manier van stenenwinning waarderen.

Ons avontuur begint met ophalen bij je hotel en vervolgens transfer naar de traditionele stad Yanahuara, zeer opmerkelijk vanwege zijn hardstenen bogen, een witte vulkanische steen die typerend is voor de koloniale architectuur in Arequipa. Dit uitkijkpunt biedt een uitzonderlijk uitzicht over de stad Arequipa. Op dezelfde manier kunnen we vanaf daar de drie beroemdste met sneeuw bedekte bergen in de regio bewonderen: Chachani, Pichu Picchu en Misti.
Vlakbij de stad Arequipa ligt een van de meest indrukwekkende natuurlijke landschappen die je je maar kunt voorstellen. Het is een schat voor de Arequipeño-bevolking waar de iconische sillar (de witte vulkanische steen die wordt gebruikt in de koloniale constructies van Arequipa) wordt gewonnen. De bouwers leggen op dezelfde plek hun werktechnieken en het gebruik van vulkanische steen uit.
Na een rondleiding door het steengroevegebied en het observeren van het ambachtelijke werk van deze steen, vervolgen we ons bezoek aan het kronkelige ravijn van Culebrillas, gelegen op 15 minuten van de Añashuayco-steengroeve. We beginnen onze wandeling van ongeveer 20 minuten, Culebrillas. een indrukwekkend gebied dat opvalt door zijn kromlijnige formaties vol charme en magie (de wandeling is een beetje hobbelig). We zullen enkele rotstekeningen observeren die op de wanden van het ravijn zijn geïmpregneerd. We zullen ongeveer 5 minuten een helling beklimmen. Aan het einde zullen we de Apachetas observeren, stenen heuvels die een mystieke traditie vertegenwoordigen voor de lokale bewoners. We gaan aan de slag met mobiliteit, de terugreis duurt ongeveer 40 minuten om het stadscentrum te bereiken.

Ophaallocaties en -tijden
De ophaalservice vindt alleen plaats in het historische centrum. Als uw accommodatie ver weg is, bevindt het ontmoetingspunt zich bij de deur van de kathedraal op de Plaza de Armas van Arequipa.

Magali was our guide. She did a great job. Be prepared to walk. Could have used more time at the statues/quarry to see all of it. Some of the walk is uphill. Wear closed toe hiking boots or good athletic shoes. Went in June at 9 am slot and it was hot. Sun screen recommended. Mosquitoes at cabrillas are real!! Van ride was good. Definitely a great short day trip!

Very well run tour. The minibus picked us up at around 6 places in the historic district. It was a bit slow because of traffic. First stop at the look-out point. Then the sillar quarry. Lastly the canyon which was the best of the three. As we are seniors and about double the age of the others, the guide and some of the other travelers had to give a steadying hand through the canyon and up the hill at the end, but it was all good. The petroglyphs were a little lackluster. Altogether a good tour, but not a must-do. The guide worked hard to give us all the information in English and Spanish.

Unique experience to visit the sillar quarry
Quiet and very nice walk, with beautiful landscapes on the way, which allow you to see the volcanoes. In Culebrillas guides are very careful and informative. On the Sillar route, there is a brief explanation and each visitor travels the site on account. Both tours are quite worth it and give a great experience, with very nice photos.

This was an inexpensive tour to see 3 areas and observe the quarry from which Arequipa has been built, with good views of the volcanoes and a short walk in a narrow canyon to see some petroglyphs. Sometimes it felt as though we had too long and sometimes felt hurried but i guess that varies with ones interests.

Great experience, with billingual guide, very helpful and fun opportunity to see look out views of the mountains, try queso helado, explore the pillar route and stone carvings as well as the culebrillas petroglyphs and learn a little more about ancient Andean culture.
