Onze derde etappe van de reis zal een reis naar Robbeneiland zijn en de hele reis inclusief de gevangenistour tot het moment waarop je terugkeert naar het startpunt zal 3 tot 4 uur duren. Uw deskundige gidschauffeur zal u niet begeleiden, aangezien het Robbeneilandmuseum zijn eigen gidsen heeft en de meesten van hen voormalige politieke gevangenen op het eiland zijn. Er zijn tal van vrij rondlopende Afrikaanse pinguïns op Robbeneiland. DISCLAIMER: De veerboot naar Robbeneiland is beschikbaar onder gunstige weersomstandigheden. Mocht de Robbeneiland-boottocht worden geannuleerd terwijl deze al ter plaatse is vanwege slechte weersomstandigheden, dan gaat de tour verder met een lange wandeling naar de vrijheid en worden de veerboottickets aan u terugbetaald.
Kort nadat je hotel is opgehaald door een deskundige, gekwalificeerde gids-chauffeur, word je meegenomen naar de nieuwe "The Long March to Freedom" die vroeger zijn thuis was in Pretoria. Dit is de Lange Mars naar Vrijheid, onderdeel van een grotere ontwikkeling van meer dan 500 levensgrote bronzen iconen van Zuid-Afrika's strijd voor vrijheid. Alle cijfers samen vertegenwoordigen een tijdlijn van Zuid-Afrika's 350-jarige reis naar democratie. Beginnend in 1652 met de vestiging van de Nederlands Oost-Indische nederzetting in Kaapstad en eindigend in 1994 met de eerste democratische verkiezingen in het land. Het is de grootste openluchtsculptuur van individuen ter wereld en maakt gebruik van openbare kunst om het erfgoed van het land te vieren, terwijl bezoekers op een ongebruikelijke en vermakelijke manier meer te weten komen over de Zuid-Afrikaanse geschiedenis. If you’re South African, it makes you think differently about the freedom we have now. If you’re a visitor, it explains a huge part of our country’s story in 4 hours. Bring a jacket, bring tissues, and bring an open mind. It’s worth every minute and every rand.
I came to Cape Town for the scenery, but this tour is what made the trip meaningful. The ferry can be choppy if the wind is up, so take motion sickness tablets if you’re sensitive. Book ahead, because this tour sells out fast, especially in summer. The boat ride to the island is comfortable, and the guides on the island balance storytelling with space to absorb what you’re seeing. Walking through the prison corridors, seeing the courtyard where prisoners exercised, and visiting the lime quarry gave me a sense of the physical and psychological toll. The guide also spoke about reconciliation and what life has been like post-release, which added hope to a heavy story. We were back in Cape Town by late afternoon, and I spent the evening just thinking about what I’d heard. If you want a tour that stays with you, this is it.

Honestly for me, this tour was an absolute highlight of our trip to Cape Town. As someone who wanted to learn more about the History during the apartheid, this tour was perfect. From the moment we were picked up at our hotel, we were in excellent hands. Our tour guide was not only knowledgeable but also passionate about sharing Mandela's story. The Long March to Freedom statues were awe-inspiring, and visiting Robben Island Museum was humbling and enlightening. If you're visiting Cape Town, this tour is a must-do. We visited from America and really enjoyed the tour, very informative. The only drawback was the length of time of transport from the mall to the island. Our ticket was for 3pm and we left at 4:30pm. We stood in line for a hour.
