Als je op zoek bent naar een ervaring buiten de gebaande paden met ontzagwekkende uitzichten op de wilde, ongerepte natuur, Georgia. is precies de plek voor jou. Racha, ook wel het 'Zwitserland van de Kaukasus' genoemd, is een van de meest pittoreske regio's van Georgië. Met sneeuw bedekte toppen, machtige gletsjers, verborgen valleien, groene alpenweiden en panoramische vergezichten over de Grote Kaukasus zijn slechts enkele van de pareltjes van de regio. Bekijk een paar plaatsen in de wereld die zijn opgenomen in de lijst van UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocaties in de regio Imereti. Ervaar de reis van je leven, gevuld met uitzicht op gebouwen zo oud als de 11e eeuw, verbazingwekkende natuur en adem de adem in van het zuurstofparadijs.

Het is een klein en heel mooi klooster met ronde torentjes bekroond met puntige tentvormige koepels. Het klooster staat boven de ruige Rioni-rivier en ligt bedolven onder de kustvegetatie. Volgens de legende werd het klooster gebouwd op de plaats waar islamitische agressors David en Konstantin Mkheidze, Georgische prinsen, die weigerden de islam te aanvaarden, executeerden. In een kleine kloosterzaal op een verhevenheid staat een grote rechthoekige ark met de heiligen van de vrome prinsen die door de Georgische Kerk heilig zijn verklaard. Motsameta trekt massa's toeristen met een eeuwenoud bijgeloof: als iemand drie keer onder de ark kruipt en een wens doet terwijl hij de heiligen aanraakt, zullen de prinsen David en Konstantin die wens vervullen. Tsaar Bagrat III reconstrueerde de kerk in de 10e eeuw. In de 19e eeuw werd het gebouw opnieuw gereconstrueerd.
Het Gelati-klooster ligt in de regio Imereti. Het klooster werd gesticht door David de Bouwer in 1106. We lezen in zijn testament: “Het klooster bleef voor altijd voor mijn begrafenis en voor de crypte van mijn kinderen en ik zal eeuwige pijn verdragen, dus moge mijn zoon Dimitri de bouw voltooien”. Hier ligt de grootste koning van Georgië begraven. Het ensemble omvat de hoofdkerk van de Hemelvaart van de Maagd, de Sint-Joriskerk, de Sint-Niklaaskerk, de klokkentoren, de academie en het hek. Het Gelati-klooster was het grootste culturele en educatieve centrum. Het Gelati-complex is opgenomen in de lijst van UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocaties.
Tskhrajvari (‘Negen Kruisen’) is misschien wel het meest spectaculaire uitzichtpunt in heel Georgië, en zeker een van de beste dagwandelingen in de buurt van Koetaisi. Tskhrajvari is een orthodox pelgrimsoord en uitkijkpunt in de buurt van de Nakerala-pas, direct aan de vooravond van de regio's Imereti en Racha-Lechkhumi in West-Georgië. Op 1500 meter boven de zeespiegel biedt het een fantastisch uitzicht op de bergen van de Grote Kaukasus, inclusief de twee toppen van Ushba. Op een heldere dag kun je helemaal tot aan de Zwarte Zee kijken. De wandeling begint achter het verlaten betonnen kabelbaanstation. Je begint meteen te stijgen, maar met een heel lichte helling. Het pad is niet strikt gemarkeerd, maar het is vrij duidelijk waar je heen moet. Bij twijfel volgt u de witte rotsen. Overal langs de baan zijn uitkijkpunten. Je ziet ook verschillende religieuze heiligdommen, waaronder een uitgeholde boomstam gevuld met iconen, en wensbomen zwaar beladen met satijnen sjaals, linten en stukken gescheurde stof.
Shaori Reservoir is een van de meest aantrekkelijke plekken in Racha. Als u naar Racha gaat, kunt u het stuwmeer, dat u verblindt met zijn landschap, niet passeren.
De Nikortsminda-kathedraal is een Georgisch-orthodoxe kerk, gelegen in Nikortsminda, regio Racha in Georgië. Nikortsminda werd gebouwd in 1010–1014 tijdens het bewind van Bagrat III van Georgië en werd in 1534 gerepareerd door koning Bagrat III van Imereti. De klokkentoren van drie verdiepingen naast de kathedraal werd gebouwd in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw. Fresco's in de kathedraal dateren uit de 17e eeuw. De kathedraal volgt een rechthoekig kruisplan met korte armen en heeft een kort segment naar het westen. De gevels van de kathedraal zijn bedekt met glad gehouwen steen. Decoraties omvatten ononderbroken arcaturen en verschillende rijke ornamenten, waaronder verhalende reliëfs en afleveringen met meerdere figuren. Nikortsminda heeft een van de mooiste decoraties van alle Georgische kerken en kathedralen, aangezien er verschillende stijlen te zien zijn. De kathedraal staat op de voorlopige lijst voor status als UNESCO-werelderfgoed.

It was an excellent journey. The car was very comfortable, with air conditioning, a large trunk, and plenty of legroom in the back seat, so height is not an issue. Irakli is an excellent driver: careful, polite, and decisive when needed, unlike many local drivers, he does not speed or overtake recklessly, and you feel safe throughout the trip. Irakli was also extremely helpful: he accommodated all of our requests, arranged breaks whenever we asked, and adjusted the route to suit our decisions. Although the journey ended up taking an extra hour beyond what we had paid for (due to our additional requests for sites we wanted to see), Irakli was completely understanding and simply told us to take our time. Overall, it was an excellent experience. We saw everything that can reasonably be visited in a single day in the Racha region, including Tskhrajvari Mountain, Shaori Lake, the Nikortsminda and Khotevi Churches, a Khvanchkara Winery, sites near Ambrolauri, and the Sairme Pillars. We felt safe, comfortable, and well cared for throughout the trip.
The tour was very diverse. We enjoyed beautiful views and visited a 2nd-century monastery. We also went fishing together. Our guide gave us plenty of time for everything; he's very knowledgeable.
Irakli is a very knowledgeable, kind, and passionate guide. We had a great time on this off-the-beaten path tour to the remote and beautiful Racha region, with a good mix of mountain/lake views, hike, and monasteries. He also was quite flexible and added optional secondary stops. He was also a great, smooth driver and gave us many helpful recommendations. Highly recommended!

This was the perfect itinerary focused on the mountains and monasteries with the bonus combination of a mini hike plus walk and a food tour thanks to our wonderful free flowing interaction with Iracli. Kudos to Iracli for picking us up from our hostel on the outskirts of Kutaisi 💯 He patiently explained the history of the various monasteries we visited and gave us real deep insights into the differences among the regions within Georgia! Given we’re a relatively physically active couple, Iracli offered to hike with us to the top of the nine crosses mountain. He even included two bonus stops after the last stop since we vibed so well! We tasted local Racha delicacies in Ambroulari and then even took a detour to visit a waterfall on the route back to Kutaisi. To top it all, he’s an avid football fan so we watched the man united match together during the journey. In short, I’d highly recommend at least a day with him in Georgia to get the perfect local experience blended with fun 🤩

My son and I had an amazing experience visiting Racha region with Saba from Georgian Voyage.
