Privétour naar het oude Koptische Caïro en de grotkerk van St. Simon.

In de ochtend word je opgehaald bij je hotel in Cairo en bezoek je het klooster van Saint Simon, ook wel bekend als de Cave Church of Zabbaleen. Het ligt in de Mokattam Mountain, een korte rit door de zogenaamde "Garbage City" - een grote populatie vuilnismannen of Zabbaleen die daar wonen. Eerst bezoeken we Saint Simon the Tanner Hall en St. Mark's Church. Deze enorme grot werd ontdekt in het jaar 1974. De bovenste verdieping is de St. Simon the Tanner Hall met een zitcapaciteit van 2000 mensen voor spirituele bijeenkomsten. De muren zijn versierd met veel prachtige afbeeldingen gegraveerd op de rotsen die scenario's uit de Bijbel voorstellen. Daarna gaan we verder en bezoeken we de kathedraal van de Maagd Maria en St. Simon the Tanner, daarna bezoek je het oude Koptische Cairo om de oude Koptische kerken en de oudste synagoge van Ben Ezra te verkennen en de plaats waar de profeet Mozes een tijdje woonde. Na de tour ga je terug naar je hotel.

Onze gids zal je om 09:00 uur ontmoeten in de lobby van het hotel en vervolgens overstappen om het klooster van Saint Simon te bezoeken, ook bekend als de grotkerk van Zabbaleen, die dateert uit de tiende eeuw na Christus voor Saint Simon de leerlooier, het is gelegen in de Mokattam-berg en is uitgehouwen in de inheemse rots van de berg om de grootste kerk in Egypte en het Midden-Oosten te zijn, een korte rit door de zogenaamde "Garbage City" - een grote populatie vuilnismannen of Zabbaleen die daar wonen.
Daarna ga je naar het oude Koptische Caïro, het is een van de oudste gebieden in Caïro, het bolwerk van het christendom, het is zo'n heilige plaats sinds het getuige was van het heilige familiebestaan tijdens hun reis in Caïro om de hangende kerk van de maagd Marry te bezoeken die bouwde op de top van het fort van Babylon, bezoek je de Sint-Joriskerk die in de tiende eeuw in de naam van Sint-Joris is gebouwd door Koptische schriftgeleerden, dan zie je de Grotkerk van Sergious en Bakhus de twee Romeinse martelaren en de Ben Ezra-synagoge de oudste één in Caïro, dan lunch je in een leuk restaurant en daarna wordt je teruggebracht naar het hotel.

Great tour. Hannah was a very accommodating tour guide. She asked what things we were missing and made sure to accommodate them into the tour. We did not feel rushed. We learned a lot of history and saw some fascinating sites of old Cairo.

I recently booked a private tour of a Coptic Church in Egypt and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience with the guide, Amira. Since this was a private tour, I expected a personalized, professional, and informative experience. Instead, she was frequently on her phone and did not seem engaged. When discussing the history and significance of the church, her explanations were limited and lacked depth, which was especially disappointing given the importance and sacred nature of the site. The tour also felt rushed. I did not feel that I received the full experience or adequate time to properly appreciate and learn about the church, which was frustrating, especially for a private tour. Her behavior felt unprofessional as well. She seemed more focused on encouraging me to purchase items from local shops rather than providing a meaningful tour. Even after I clearly stated that I was not interested in buying anything, she continued to push the matter, which made the experience uncomfortable. Overall, the private tour did not meet expectations. I hope this feedback is taken seriously so future visitors receive the knowledgeable, attentive, and respectful service that such a historic and sacred place deserves.

This was an excellent private tour that genuinely delivered on seeing a different side of Cairo. Exploring Coptic Cairo felt personal and unrushed, with fascinating stops at the Cave Church, the Hanging Church, and other key Coptic sites, plus the eye opening visit to Garbage City which most tourists never see. Hanan and Sameh were both knowledgeable, relaxed, and great company, and as it was just me it truly felt like a bespoke experience rather than a packaged tour. They were also brilliant photographers and videographers, and even helped me spontaneously do the zip line near the Cave Church, filming it for me without hesitation. The private transport was comfortable, the pacing flexible, and they were happy to adjust my drop off location at the end. Overall it was a very enjoyable, well run day that felt authentic, flexible, and thoughtfully guided.
