De Grote Piramide van Gizeh is de oudste piramide in het plateau van Gizeh en de grootste piramide, gebouwd voor farao Khufu rond 2580 v.Chr. Het was oorspronkelijk 146 meter hoog en bestond uit ongeveer 2,3 miljoen kalksteenblokken. Het diende als koninklijk graf van Khufu en is het enige overgebleven wonder van de Zeven Wonderen van de Oude Wereld.
De Tweede Piramide van Gizeh, ook wel bekend als de Piramide van Khafre, werd gebouwd voor koning Khafre, de zoon van Khufu. Het staat iets kleiner dan de Grote Piramide, maar lijkt hoger omdat het op hoger gelegen grond is gebouwd en nog steeds enkele van zijn oorspronkelijke gladde omhulselstenen aan de bovenkant heeft.
De kleinste piramide van Gizeh is de piramide van Menkaure, gebouwd voor koning Menkaure, de kleinzoon van Khufu. Het is ongeveer 65 meter hoog, veel kleiner dan de piramides van Khufu en Khafre, maar uniek omdat het onderste deel is gebouwd met rood graniet, waardoor het een kenmerkende uitstraling heeft. Ernaast staan drie kleinere “koninginnenpiramides”. Hoewel het de kleinste is, toont het fijn vakmanschap en is het een belangrijk onderdeel van het piramidecomplex van Gizeh.
Het Panoramisch Uitzicht op het Gizeh Plateau is een beroemde plek waar bezoekers de drie piramides van Khufu, Khafre en Menkaure samen in één lijn kunnen zien. De Grote Sfinx van Gizeh is een massief kalkstenen beeld met het lichaam van een leeuw en het hoofd van koning Khafre. Het is ongeveer 73 meter lang en 20 meter hoog, waarmee het de grootste en oudst bekende monumentale sculptuur ter wereld is. De Sfinx werd gebouwd om de piramides te bewaken en symboliseert kracht, wijsheid en bescherming. Het ligt direct naast Khafre's piramide en de Valleitempel, waardoor een van de meest iconische scènes van het oude Egypte is ontstaan.

This was a super experience! Our driver and our guide were excellent. Our guide Ahmed was so fun, creative with pictures and had a great sense of humor. His knowledge of Egypt and the Pyramids and Sphinx made this an experience to remember. Ibrahim his driver was excellent in picking us up and getting us to the Pyramids and back to the hotel. My wife and I would recommend using Ahmed & Ibrahim again the next time we come to Egypt.
