Lodz is de derde stad van Polen die honderd jaar geleden het centrum van de Poolse industrie was. Om die reden heette Lodz vroeger het Beloofde Land of het Poolse Manchester. De grootste kracht van deze stad komt echter uit de geschiedenis. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog annexeerden de nazi-Duitsers Lodz bij het Reich en veranderden de naam in Litzmannstadt. Kort daarna bouwden ze een getto en sloten er meer dan 200.000 Poolse joden in op. Slechts enkele mensen hebben het overleefd. De wijk heeft het echter overleefd en herdenkt vandaag die tragische gebeurtenissen. Lodz is de stad van contrasten. Midden in het doolhof van fabrieken en ateliers ligt het pittoreske centrum verscholen. Het is het mooiste deel van de stad. Er zijn tal van prachtige vooroorlogse gebouwen met rijk versierde gevels. Ze vertegenwoordigen een unieke stijl die je noch in Warschau, noch in Krakau zult vinden. Het duurt maar anderhalf uur om vanuit Warschau naar Lodz te komen en het is echt de moeite waard.

We had a wonderful day trip from Warsaw to Lodz with Marcin. He briefed us in detail on our way to Lodz and showed us around the key sightseeings. A great choice of place for lunch too. Nothing beats the local knowledge!
This one-day private tour of Lodz (from Warsaw) is highly recommended. Martin is an excellent and highly knowledgeable and professional tour guide, who met us promptly at our hotel. During the drive to Lodz (a little under 2 hours) Martin gave us a detailed insight into the city of Lodz. He also recounted the horrendous experience of the Jews of the city’s ghetto and their eventual fate. It is a very sensitive story and he handled it very well. His English language skills are excellent, and he is a good communicator. He was happy to answer any questions and gave us a great deal of information about Lodz, Warsaw and Poland in general. The tour was very interesting and included all of the important locations specified in the itinerary concerning the Lodz Jewish ghetto and its’ fate. Also, we appreciated the visit to the former Poznanski factory now converted to a shopping mall where we had a traditional Polish lunch. The final part of the visit was to the centre of Lodz and showed the links of Lodz to the movie and entertainment industries, even having its’ own Walk of Fame with stars for Roman Polanski and many other famous Poles in entertainment.
Martin did a great job! He is very knowledgeable on various topics and events. The Polish lunch was very good too.
While small, Lodz has a first class interactive museum highlighting the Jewish ghetto during the Holocaust. In addition, the complex that once housed the textile mill that enabled the ghetto residents to remain valuable to the Nazis is now a huge outdoor mall. That complex and the Poznanski Palace was incredible. My guide Martin was so knowledgeable about Lodz - at the same time sensitive and empathetic to the plight of the Jews and the terrible circumstance of their plight. Martin was a wonderful guide and I enjoyed my day with him, considering the sad subject matter.
