De Rode Khmer veranderde de Toul Sleng High School in een centrum voor ondervraging, marteling en dood. In elke kamer zijn duizenden foto's van slachtoffers te zien. Je loopt langzaam en onderzoekt de materialen die worden gebruikt voor het verhoren van gevangenen. Daarna reizen we ongeveer 15 km richting het zuidwesten van Phnom Penh en komen we aan bij Choeung Ek. Het monument bij Choeung Ek net buiten Phnom Penh was een boomgaard! En een Chinese begraafplaats vóór 1975. Tijdens het regime van de Rode Khmer werd het een van de moordvelden waar de brute executies plaatsvonden van meer dan 17.000 personen, van wie de meesten voor het eerst leden onder marteling en ontbering in de gevangenis van Toul Sleng. Choeung Ek is nu een groep massagraven en een herdenkingsstupa met duizenden schedels. Kom terug naar het hotel en vertrek.

Tuol Sleng was een voormalige middelbare school die de Rode Khmer veranderde in een centrum voor ondervraging, marteling en dood. Tegenwoordig is het een martelmuseum en dient het om bezoekers te herinneren aan de verschrikkelijke gruweldaden die in Cambodja zijn gebeurd. 17.000 mensen gingen door de poorten van deze gevangenis en slechts zeven leefden om het verhaal te vertellen.
Gevangenen van Tuol Sleng volgden dezelfde weg naar hun lot. Choeng Ek, een oude Chinese begraafplaats, werd veranderd in een vernietigingskamp voor politieke gevangenen. De overblijfselen van 8985 mensen werden opgegraven uit massagraven en worden hier bewaard in een herdenkingsstupa. Ondanks de gruwelen van het verleden is het een vredige plek om naartoe te gaan en een rustige plek om na te denken over de tragische gebeurtenissen die Cambodja en zijn bevolking overspoelden.

On our first visit to Phnom Penh, we felt we needed to visit the Killing Fields and Genocidal Museum to understand the full extent of the atrocities that happened here, but also to pay our respect to the victims. Ms Thavy was an excellent private guide, allowing us to move at our own pace, giving us clear explanations for everything we saw, but also giving us time alone to see and reflect on the mass graves and the museum exhibits. It was a hard morning, and what we really found difficult, was that this all happened in our lifetime. A sobering and sad experience but important to learn about . Our guide Mrs Thavy was very good in explaining the true horrors of what happened here. Excellent tour. Boat was easy. We had early pickup so rushed through early breakfast at hotel but need not have bothered - croissant and fruit on board would have been sufficient. Guide was very informative and knowledgeable. Great day

The Killing Field trip was a difficult one, but Mrs. Sreyneang was an excellent guide. She explained in detail what had happened, but with empathy and at a speed that we could digest it all. Her knowledge and caring came through and we felt lucky to have such an amazing tour guide. She even took us to meet the last two living survivors of the prison. That is something we won't forget. We recommend that everyone do this tour so we all fully understand how awful human beings can be to each other. It also shows how much people tried to help each other in a desperate time.
