Op zoek naar een Joodse wandeltocht door Berlijn

Je focus voor deze 3-uur durende geschiedenistour zal de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden zijn van de joodse geschiedenis van Berlijn in de 19e en 20e eeuw en de districten Spandauer Vorstadt en Scheunenviertel (bekend als de 'Barn Quarter') in Berlijn-Mitte. Neem de gracieuze avenue Oranienburger Straße in, waar de magnifieke Nieuwe Synagoge werd opgericht in 1866. Leer niet alleen over de conflicten tussen Duitse Joden en niet-Joden, maar ook over spanningen tussen de grotendeels geassimileerde Duitse Joden en de zogenaamde Oosterse Joden ('Ostjuden') ') die Berlijn vulde in de jaren 1920 na het ontvluchten van anti-Joods geweld in hun thuisland.

De grootse architectuur van de Nieuwe Synagoge symboliseerde en vierde de Joodse assimilatie in Duitsland in de 19e eeuw. Het is dan ook een van de meest ontroerende plekken op onze wandeling. Tegenwoordig is het de thuisbasis van de Joodse gemeenschap die herleeft in Berlijn,
Auguststrasse leefde ooit met Joodse instellingen, bijvoorbeeld de Joodse Meisjesschool die tussen 1927 en 1928 werd opgericht. Het schoolgebouw, gelegen aan de Auguststraße 11-13, is een historisch monument gebouwd door architect Alexander Beer, gekenmerkt door de stijl van de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. Tegenwoordig is het de thuisbasis van een tentoonstellingshal en een coffeeshop die zeker een bezoek waard zijn.
Rond de Hackescher Markt ontwikkelde zich een levendige Joodse gemeenschap, waar we genieten van de sierlijke architectuur en verhalen over het Duits-Joodse leven op Spandauer Vorstadt en Scheunenviertel (bekend als de "Barn Quarter") in Berlijn-Mitte.
Het ontroerende monument is ter nagedachtenis aan de aanhoudende protestdemonstraties van de niet-joodse vrouwen en familieleden van joodse mannen die door de nazi's waren gearresteerd en het doelwit waren van deportatie.
Ontworpen door architect Peter Eisenman, zul je een persoonlijke ervaring hebben van het passeren van het ontnuchterende labyrint van 2711 betonplaten die bedoeld zijn om de erkenning van de Holocaust door Duitsland te vertegenwoordigen.

Outstanding academic overview of local Jewish history. Martin was wonderfully honest and knowledgeable. We saw sites and buildings related to Berlin's past Jewish population that we cou never have known. Remarkable to hear Jewish history interpreted by a German native and academic. Very forthright presentation.

This was an outstanding tour of Jewish history in Berlin. Our guide, Ronan, was extremely knowledgeable and informative. He shared fascinating stories going back in history to the Jewish people’s arrival in Berlin until the present day. And of course we saw many places we wouldn’t have recognized as vital to Jewish history in Berlin. Lots of opportunity to ask questions. I strongly recommend this tour.
