Deze voordelige reis met een door de overheid goedgekeurde en ervaren meertalige Gids is een fantastische en efficiënte manier om Okayama te verkennen! Het juweel van Okayama City is Korakuen Garden, beschouwd als een van Japan's top drie tuinen. U kunt genieten van roze kersenbloesems in het voorjaar, veelkleurige esdoorns in de herfst en de kraaizwarte buitenkant van het nabijgelegen Okayama Castle het hele jaar door. Okayama dient ook als een transporthub, die de Shinkansen verbindt met de spoorwegdienst op Shikoku Island. Okayama Castle (岡山 城 Okayamajō), ook wel bekend als "crow castle" vanwege zijn zwarte buitenkant, werd gebouwd in 1597 in de stijl van de Azuchi-Momoyama-periode. Het oorspronkelijke kasteel werd verwoest in het laatste jaar van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, maar in 1966 werd het herbouwd. Het kasteel ligt aan de rivier de Asahi, die werd gebruikt als gracht. Korakuen Garden ligt aan de overkant van de rivier. Slechts één van de oorspronkelijke gebouwen van het Okayama-kasteel is tijdens de oorlog aan de vernietiging ontsnapt, de Tsukimi Yagura ("maankijktoren"), die dateert uit 1620. Er zijn ook reconstructies en opgegraven fundamenten van een paar andere voormalige gebouwen, die de vroegere omvang helpen illustreren van het kasteelcomplex.
Korakuen (後 楽 園 Kōrakuen) is een prachtige landschapstuin en de belangrijkste attractie van Okayama. Samen met Kanazawa's Kenrokuen en Mito's Kairakuen wordt Korakuen gerangschikt als een van de drie beste landschapstuinen van Japan. Het ligt net naast het kasteel van Okayama, dat vanuit de tuin kan worden gezien als "geleend landschap". De lokale feodale heer gaf opdracht tot de bouw van Korakuen in 1687 als een uitgaansgelegenheid voor de heersende familie en een locatie voor het ontvangen van belangrijke gasten. Af en toe mocht het publiek de tuin betreden.
De Kibi-vlakte (吉 備 路, Kibiji) is een charmant, landelijk vlak land net buiten het centrum van Okayama City dat is bedekt met uitgestrekte velden en bezaaid met heiligdommen, tempels en kleine groepjes boerderijen. De vlakte kan het beste worden verkend vanaf een aantrekkelijk fietspad dat onderweg verschillende historische bezienswaardigheden bezoekt. Tijdens de 4e eeuw was de Kibi-vlakte het centrum van het Kibi-koninkrijk, een oude clan die een groot deel van de moderne prefectuur Okayama beheerste en wiens macht wedijverde met die van de dominante Yamato-clan in de huidige prefectuur Nara. Verspreid over de vlakte zijn enkele historische bezienswaardigheden te vinden die verband houden met het koninkrijk, zoals grote grafheuvels en enkele heiligdommen.
Onze absoluut favoriete plek voor kersenbloesem in Okayama was niet Korakuen of de Asahi-rivier, maar de magische Handayama Botanische Tuin. Deze heuveltuin heeft uitzicht over de stad en maar liefst 1000 kersenbomen - ze strekken zich steeds verder uit en je voelt je volledig ondergedompeld in de bloemen. Het beste van alles is dat dit verborgen juweeltje niet erg druk is (zelfs tijdens een zonnig weekend in volle bloei). Er zijn veel grasvelden om achterover te leunen en naar de bloemen te staren of te picknicken.
Het Nishigawa Canal Park is geen topattractie in Okayama, maar het is een aangename plek om te joggen of te wandelen, vooral in het kersenbloesemseizoen. Het kanaal loopt door de stad en is bezaaid met bloemen, kersenbomen en sculpturen met banken om te zitten en ervan te genieten.
Kurashiki is de populairste dagtrip vanuit Okayama en ligt op slechts 20 minuten met de trein. Het is de historische wijk Bizan van de stad die bezoekers trekt. Dit pittoreske gebied beschikt over traditionele Japanse huizen en een gracht omzoomd met treurwilgen. Het gebied dateert uit de 17e eeuw, toen het een belangrijke locatie was op de Japanse rijsthandelsroute. Rijst werd daar op schepen over de grachten aangevoerd en vervolgens in pakhuizen bewaard voordat het naar de steden werd verscheept. De pakhuizen met hun witte muren en zwarte tegels zijn bewaard gebleven en zijn nu winkels en cafés.

Have an idea about what sort of things you would like to do before you go and all will be accommodated time permitting. Our Gide Sam was wonderful and knowledgeable. He was pround to show us his city and quirky little parts we would never have found by ourselves. We asked for a lunch recommendation and we delighted in his surprise local eatery that served up Okayama delights!
It was indeed brisk and breathtaking that we enjoyed every minute of the tour. When we visited Korakuen Garden, we were heartily welcomed by the cranes' awesome crying, scorched lawn, fragrant scent of plum blossoms, and bitter taste of tea leaves. I also had you face the fact that Okayama-jo Castle stands on a "mountain" with a height of about 7 meters! For lunch, time management might have been a bit difficult, but we succeeded in enjoying the authentic soybean curd cuisine. It was worth trying. As part of a 5-hour Okayama tour, we visited Okayama Castle, Korakuen Garden, and the Kurashiki Historic Area. What the guest said was very informative. Since lunch is one of the pleasures of the tour, where to have it should be well discussed between the tourists and the guide.
A very organise tour, from the prompt pick up at meeting place (train station) to drop off at our accommodation. Our guide, Naoki has wealth of knowledge regarding the area and it's history, he covered a lot of ground in an allocated 4hr time frame.

We had a great tour with our guide, Ray. She was very nice, helpful and easy to talk to. She went out of her way to help us find a quaint pottery shop called Sobian near the Okayama Railway Station. We ended up buying two special Bizen teacups. Thanks to Ray, we had a wonderful tour of Okayama Castle and Korakuen. We especially enjoyed seeing the Ted-Crowned Cranes, the beautiful and serene garden, and meandering along the winding paths viewing the tea trees, plum groves, ponds and bridges.
