Mombacho-vulkaan, nevelwoud
Beschrijving
Alleen al de rit bergopwaarts is een avontuur op zich, de ongelooflijke steilheid van de vulkaan staat garant voor een spectaculaire 4x4-rit. Je ziet koffieplantages en later het nevelwoud. De uitzichten zijn spectaculair vanaf hier. Wanneer je op de top op 1.200 meter hoogte aankomt, is de temperatuur aanzienlijk gedaald en is de luchtvochtigheid hoog. Het waait altijd, dus neem zeker een extra trui mee. Bovenaan bevindt zich een toeristisch centrum met kaarten, foto's, modellen, souvenirs en nog veel meer interessant materiaal. Er is ook een cafetaria waar u een kleine maaltijd en drankjes kunt krijgen, gebruik het toilet. De Mombacho-vulkaan heeft vier kraters. Alle kraters zijn bedekt met nevelwoud en je kunt rond een van de kraters lopen, of rond verschillende kraters wandelen. Naast veel verschillende bomen en planten die gedijen vanwege de vochtigheid van de nevelwouden, kun je ook brulapen en witgezichtapen observeren, evenals slangen, herten, reptielen, vogels en insecten.

De Crater Trial biedt de mogelijkheid om door het enige nevelwoud in de Stille Oceaan van Nicaragua te wandelen. Je begint de vulkaan te beklimmen met een 4x4-truck en stopt onderweg voor een heerlijke lokale koffie op een van de plantages. Eenmaal boven kun je genieten van een korte, anderhalf uur durende begeleide wandeling langs het pad, die door een verscheidenheid aan landschappen gaat. Mogelijk zien we onderweg brulapen en witkopapen, luiaards, pijlkikkers en de endemische Mombacho-salamander. Het dwergbos heeft fumarolen en het is mogelijk om flora en fauna van het lokale ecosysteem tegen te komen. In het noorden zie je de stad Granada, de eilandjes van Granada, het Asese-schiereiland, de Apoyo-lagune en het Masaya-vulkaan nationaal park.

We were picked up at our hotel and taken to an area partway up the mombacho volcano, where there was a nice little rest area and coffee plantation. We then rode in another vehicle, with others up the very steep road to the top, which was an adventure in itself. Once there we hiked around the crater which was a lot of up and down, but had many interesting overlooks and plants. Our guide, Israel was very knowledgeable and patient with my slowness, which was much appreciated. We were very glad that we took the time toget a better understanding of the volcano that we had been looking at from afar.

The tour operator will deny the terrain difficulty when directly asked multiple times in advance. They will cut your tour by two hours for no reason. And refuse to accommodate travelers who are unable to participate due to this misrepresentation. $240 down the drain, time wasted
At the summit of the volcano, there are three trails marked by the biological station: easy, moderate, and difficult. For our Mombacho tour, we chose the easy trail, which is designed to be family-friendly and suitable for older adults. Many of our past guests—families with children and senior travelers—have thoroughly enjoyed this hike (see their positive reviews below). That said, during our visit, a 7-year-old girl and a 78-year-old woman chose not to complete the trail. We always recommend that participants have a basic level of physical fitness to fully enjoy the experience.
It was my mom, me, my sister and 2 of my cousins who went on this tour. It was great! They picked us up from a location point I picked, which was a hotel, and dropped us off of course. They picked us up from a very nice van then we switched to a 4x4 to get to the volcano and then same on the way back. On the way back we did share the 4x4 with a couple but it was alright. The views are very nice and the air feels great.

Excellent views of the surrounding area. Gustavo is a treasure. Walked around the entire crater. Saw a lot of great flora but very little fauna. School kids were visiting and were loud and disruptive, scaring off monkeys and any other silvan denizens we were hoping to glimpe that morning.
