De Mayfair van vandaag is een comfortabele mix van luxueuze herenhuizen, exclusieve winkels, betoverende parken en pleinen. Er zijn overal verborgen juweeltjes, en als we langs huizen komen die ooit bewoond werden door Royalty en de aristocratie, kunt u zich verwonderen over de architectuur. We bezoeken het meest verfijnde warenhuis van Londen om de geschiedenis te horen. We zien enkele van de oudste winkel arcades van de hoofdstad gebouwd een paar eeuwen geleden om de aristocratische dames te voorzien van winkelen opties weg van de nieuwsgierige ogen van de hoi polloi! We wandelen door prachtige pleinen en tuinen. We ontdekken hoe Mayfair vroeger een van de beruchtste rosse buurten van Londen was en komen op de hoogte van een beetje actuele roddels over het clubland van Londen! Het is moeilijk te geloven als je naar deze verfijnde winkel kijkt dat Fortnum en Mason hun leven begonnen als een marktkraam! William Fortnum werkte als een lakei voor Queen Anne van 'Favourite' faam en nam de half gebruikte koninklijke kaarsen mee om te verkopen op de marktkraam van zijn huisgenoten en daar begon het ondernemersbedrijf - we zullen snel een rondje maken op de begane grond van dit magnifieke winkel die ervoor zorgt dat je zeker terug wilt komen!
Als de oorspronkelijke eigenaren van dit pand, de graven van Burlington, hun huis vandaag zouden kunnen zien, zouden ze het niet herkennen! Sinds de bouw in de jaren 1660 hebben minstens 9 architecten eraan gewerkt om er de glamoureuze thuisbasis van de Koninklijke Academie van te maken. De transformatie van privéwoning tot wereldberoemde kunstschat is fascinerend om te horen.
Deze arcade heeft zojuist zijn 200-jarig jubileum gevierd - het werd oorspronkelijk gebouwd door George Cavendish, een van de graven van Burlington, zodat zijn vrouw en haar aristocratische vrienden ergens konden winkelen zonder te worden lastiggevallen door bedelaars! Het weerhield iedereen er ook van om afval over zijn tuinmuur te gooien, want hij woonde natuurlijk in het naastgelegen Burlington House! Een aangename wandeling van 10 minuten langs de arcade geeft je de kans om de bewakers van de arcade, de Beadles, in actie te zien en ook te genieten van windowshoppen.
De enige weg die Piccadilly en Oxford Street met elkaar verbindt, het is een van de duurste stroken onroerend goed ter wereld. Terwijl je over de trottoirs loopt, lezen de winkels zeker als een who's who van de detailhandel! Terwijl je de bekende namen in je opneemt en je verwondert over de etalages, slenteren we ongeveer 10 minuten langs Old Bond Street en een deel van New Bond Street voordat we afslaan om het huis van Norman Hartnell, een van de beroemdste ontwerpers van de mode, te bekijken uit de jaren 50 en 60.
Hoewel het gebouw er niet meer staat, kunnen we de plaats zien waar wijlen koningin Elizabeth II werd geboren en onze fantasie de rest laten doen!.
Het meest bekend om zijn nachtegaalzang, wat legendarisch is, dit is een plein vol historisch belang. Van de eeuwenoude platanen tot de monumentale gebouwen langs de randen, dit is een van de mooiste pleinen van Londen - en wie had gedacht dat er ook een rivier doorheen stroomt. Alles zal worden onthuld als we dwalen tussen de eeuwenoude bomen.
Het plein is het middelpunt van Richard Grosvenors ontwikkeling in de jaren 1730 en is vandaag de dag nog steeds prachtig. De gebouwen zijn misschien veranderd, maar de schoonheid van het plein is onovertroffen en de verhalen van de geschiedenis net zo fascinerend als altijd!
Een rustige oase in het hart van een stad die nooit stopt. Het verleden is echter niet zo kalm als vandaag - kom op de tour en in de 10 minuten dat we in de tuinen blijven, zul je ontdekken wat er onder je voeten ligt en welk gruwelijk gebouw vroeger de zijkant van de tuinen sierde.
Opgericht tijdens het bewind van James II, gaf de markt die hij vestigde Mayfair zijn naam. Eeuwenlang was Shepherd Market de drukbezochte rosse buurt van Mayfair (wat had de aristocratie anders te doen!). Tijdens onze 10 minuten durende stop hier kom je achter de fascinerende geschiedenis en welke parlementslid hier zijn reputatie verloor!

- De tour zal in totaal ongeveer 2 - 3 mijl beslaan.
- De tour gaat door bij regen of zonneschijn, dus laat je niet afschrikken door het weer. Draag comfortabele schoenen en kleding. Breng indien nodig regenjassen en een paraplu mee!
- De tour is een buitenwandeling, maar omvat wel een interne stop bij een van de meest unieke warenhuizen van Mayfair.

Sandy gave a fascinating insight into Mayfair, from its development in the 18th C to the present day following a route through grand squares and little known back streets. She had plenty of anecdotes about the past residents and visitors over the centuries to make a very interesting and informative tour.

Sandy is simply phenomenal. We were dragging after a long flight and no rest. Yet, she kept us breathlessly engaged and enthusiastically moving. We learned historical facts, both bringing to life what we learned in school (or were supposed to have) and expanding our knowledge of all those juicy historical facts that one would never get in a formal setting. If you do one thing on a visit to London I suggest that you book one of Sandy’s tours. We did the Mayfair tour and her enthusiasm and knowledge was apparent from the start. The 2 ½ hours flew past whist we leaned facts old and new - from the building of Burlington House in a muddy field over 300 years ago to the pub once owned by Madonna. Yes, it might be a little cheaper to book a large tour with 20 or 30 others but if you want a real insight to what lies under the surface of this fascinating area then I would recommend this private tour.

I like to build a rapport with the people I take on a tour and having groups of 6 including me really works so well. Mayfair is a fabulous area to explore. Wonderful revelations! Bowled over by Sandy’s description of surroundings I’d worked in all my life and not noticed or enquired about. Routine and business as usual sometimes needs a step outside the box to appreciate values and the society in which we live and Sandy achieved this. Sandy was just wonderful. Our party of 3 learned so much about the neighborhood where we were staying. We loved the way that she mingled history with shopping and international relations.
