Voor veel bezoekers aan Peru en zelfs Zuid-Amerika is een bezoek aan de Inca-stad Machu Picchu het langverwachte hoogtepunt van hun reis. Op een spectaculaire locatie is het de bekendste archeologische vindplaats op het continent. Deze ontzagwekkende oude stad werd nooit onthuld aan de veroverende Spanjaarden en werd vrijwel vergeten tot het begin van de 20e eeuw.

Om 3.55 uur begint het ophalen van het hotel, dus wees vroeg klaar en klaar om te gaan! Je wordt naar het treinstation in Ollantaytambo gereden, waar je om 6.40 uur de trein neemt en rond 8.00 uur in Aguas Calientes aankomt. Bij aankomst ontmoet je gids je op het treinstation in Aguas Calientes om je naar de bus te brengen, tot Machu Picchu. De busrit duurt ongeveer 30 minuten. U moet rond 8.45 uur in Machu Picchu aankomen en de site betreden. Tijdens een tour door deze prachtige plek, zal je tweetalige gids alles vertellen over de historische site van Machu Picchu, en je zult alle belangrijke plaatsen in de verloren stad bezoeken. De rondleiding duurt ongeveer 2,5 tot 3 uur. Daarna heb je vrije tijd om rond te dwalen en deze ontzagwekkende plek zelf te bewonderen. Het is mogelijk om de site te verlaten om een snack te eten in het café en vervolgens opnieuw binnen te gaan. Je ticket is de hele dag geldig. Optioneel: je kunt de berg Huayna Picchu beklimmen (tickets moeten worden gekocht op het moment van je Machu Picchu-aankoop), wat een rondreis van 1,5 tot 2 uur is. Deze reis is zonder gids. De toegangstijd is 10.00-11.00 uur, dus als je ervoor kiest om deze tour te nemen, zal je rondleiding sneller zijn om op tijd te eindigen om Huayna Picchu binnen te gaan. Daarna daal je af naar Aguas Calientes, de stad genoemd naar zijn warmwaterbronnen. Je kunt er met de bus komen: het is een reis van 30 minuten en bussen vertrekken elke 5 minuten. Daarna keert u terug met de trein naar Cusco. U kunt de trein van 16.12 uur kiezen om rechtstreeks naar Cusco terug te keren, of de trein van 19.00 uur om terug te keren naar Ollantaytambo - de treinrit duurt ongeveer 1 uur en 40 minuten. Een minibus wacht in Ollantaytambo om u naar Cusco te brengen (ongeveer 90 minuten).

Machu Picchu is amazing, as is Aguas Calientes - you should actually spend more time here if possible. I took a star off the rating because we felt like we were on our own on this tour. Granted, we did opt to change our bus time to an earlier slot so we could get to town and explore a bit before the actual tour, but, we had no details on the bus stop, etc. it was really kind of a figure it out as you go kind of tour. They noted they were sending a taxi for us first thing in the morning, the taxi didn’t show. We did get to the bus stop on our own with literally a minute to spare. We kind of expected to meet a guide or group at the bus stop to go up to Machu Picchu, but there wasn’t anyone. Once we got to the entrance of Machu Picchu, we were looking all over for the new guide that was told to us (different from the one we had been communicating with the entire time), he finally found us and told us that he wasn’t actually the tour guide and someone else would show up shortly. Our actual tour guide was AMAZING and we really really enjoyed our time with him. The site is breathtaking and obviously a must visit but this trip was just unorganized and left us feeling a bit anxious. All is well that ends well and we did get a great circuit and guide, I think we just had a bit higher expectations for the actual organization of the trip.

We had a unique experience in Machupicchu, the trip was spectacular , the Service on board the best, when the guide arrived he welcomed us with a big smile , he attended us of the best, an excellent professional always talking about the history and architecture of the great city of stone, motivated us to take great photos. Another plus is: The agency did all the processes, the whole organization we are really happy, has excellent professionals.
It is the first time I travel to Cuzco, the agency organized everything very well, fulfilled everything it offered me, they were always in contact with us, the guide was excellent, the train very comfortable, I recommend excellent Service, that allowed us to relax and enjoy our tour. There is no doubt that nature gives us beautiful views, Machu Picchu is an amazing place.
Certainly it was trip of a lifetime. Machu Picchu is an amazing place and the culture is well preserved. It has a different vibe altogether. My guide, Carlos was very nice and explained many things about the place, people and culture. I am very thankful to him and Treks in Cusco company for such an unforgettable trip.
