Katla Vulkaan IJsgrot - Super Jeep Tour vanuit Vik

Beschrijving

It was well worth the price I paid
This tour was such an amazing experience!! My family and I had a blast, and all consider Katla volcanic ice caves to be among the most beautiful sights we’ve ever seen. The hike up to the caves was a bit steep, but rope handholds and the provided crampons made that no problem. The stunning views are worth every bit of effort. Our guide, Ale, was fantastic and made the (quite bumpy) ride to and from location part of the fun experience. Ale’s visual demonstrations, expert knowledge of the volcano / glaciers / surrounding area, and his affable, easygoing demeanor made our tour especially enjoyable. Ale’s explanation of the relationship between Iceland’s glaciers and volcanoes, and how glacial movement shapes the land was super helpful as I’d honestly been quite confused how fire and ice could coexist the way it does in Iceland. I found myself coming back to his mini-lesson throughout the remainder of our trip along the southern portion of the Ring Road and it really helped me appreciate how incredible and unique Iceland’s environment truly is! Ale also took special care to make sure some of the stragglers in our group did not get too far behind, and even had my 73 year old mother (who is in great shape for her age but isn’t the fastest walker) set the pace for the group on the way down, reassuring her that there was no rush to reach the bottom. Overall this tour far exceeded my expectations, and I would happily book with these lovely people again. Thank you Arctic Adventures, and thank you Ale!!
There were some super aspects of the tour and some not so much. The good: well, it’s a glacier and an ice cave and that in itself is a wonderful experience. Our guide was friendly, funny, knowledgeable and very demonstrative toward the entire group and took care of those who required special assistance. Excellent choice on behalf of his employers; they did very well. The drive out and back was fun! It’s hard to call these souped up vans “super jeeps”, they were more like monster trucks but actually passenger vans. Hats off to those who designed these including meats tires and a snorkel. The not so great: The helmets (which are stored in the vans I think) smelled AWFUL. Think of a male teenage child that left his laundry in the washer for a couple weeks and then wore it. We all had to shower afterward since the smell DID NOT come off. The smell permeated the entire van. Just be warned. Finally, we chose this as a smaller group tour but there were probable another 25 vehicles at the site full of people that were at the site at the same time and at least an hour and a half or so of the tour was spent standing around waiting. Had the tour disclosed that we would have been able to better plan. We would have planned the time a little differently knowing now; should be a last activity on your schedule for the day.
Beautiful! Highly recommended! And the guide was exceptional! Fun and very attentive!
Hello Berta, thank you for the kind review. Glad Katla was such a beautiful experience, and that the guide made it a fun one. Looking forward to hosting you again. Arctic Adventures Team
We had a wonderful time! Baddi was the best guide, full of fun information, jokes, anecdotes, and just overall warm and friendly during the whole experience. Would hardly recommend this, well worth every penny. We had a bluebird day.
Hi there, thank you for such a warm review. Glad Katla was such a great experience, and that the guide brought all that energy to the day. Looking forward to hosting you again. Arctic Adventures Team
This adventure is not for the faint of heart. If you gave ANY disability this is NOT for you! We read easy and moderate for the description. And although Peter was a wonderful guide and we ended up haveing a great time, this was not moderate. It was difficult!! You end up hiking with Crampons on your shoes in ice trails for about a mile. The trail is up, down and over little “bridges” which were boards set up over flowing water. The reason this is important to know is because we had a member of our party who has trouble with anything that’s not level. She ended up staying with the car because she couldn’t participate. The rest of us managed but this was a group of people in our 60’s who do moderate exercise. We managed but were pretty darn sore and very worn out! I believe the description should reflect this information. All the trouble was worth what we saw and learned but it would have helped to know ahead of time.
To be honest was not that impressive, you depend a lot on the glacier conditions, and the cave tour was super quick. Paying that much for stepping on the glacier is something to reconsider. At least add 1h of glacier hiking if the cave is not in good conditions to be explored.
Hi Manuel, thanks for the honest feedback. The ice caves are shaped by nature, so the size and accessibility change with conditions, and some days give you more than others. The suggestions were passed to the team, appreciate it! Arctic Adventures Team
Fantastic experience! Knowledgeable guide and great weather. Jeep journey was fun. Ale (our guide) explained all the dangers and how to avoid them, as well as krampons and helmets. He also explained a lot about how the glacier formed and how it's changing. It was beautiful and interactive.
Hi Julie, glad the weather cooperated. A guide who explains the dangers clearly without making it scary and then shows you how the glacier works is exactly the right balance for Katla. Arctic Adventures Team
Super fun tour, within a nice 2-3hr window so not too long. We booked through Arctic Adventures. Fun drive in the jeep to the glacier - expect it to be bumpy :) ice caves were very cool - what you will see will depend on time of year and how much the glacier has melted etc. We went in August-from what the guide was saying perhaps it is better a month before. But still loved it!
What an amazing experience! Helgi our guide was great from start to finish with Icelandic stories and facts during the jeep ride, as well as information and history while on the glacier. He prepared us well and kept our group safe while still having fun throughout the hike and cave tour. Everything was spectacular, pictures don't do it justice.
Hi there, really glad the day earned those words. The Super Jeep ride, the glacier, and the cave are three different experiences in one tour. Come back for more! Arctic Adventures Team
