Historische wandeling van East Londons Wapping Docks en zijn beroemde pubs
Beschrijving
Wapping heeft een lange geschiedenis die helemaal teruggaat tot Angelsaksische tijden, voordat het zelfs deel uitmaakte van Londen en het ontleent zijn naam aan het oude woord Wapol, wat 'Marsh' betekent. Dit hele gebied is gevormd door de rivier, of het nu gaat om de grote ontdekkingsreizen, de Victoriaanse zware industrie en de dokken, de vreselijke Dickensiaanse sloppenwijken die de rivier omhelsden, de vreselijke verwoesting van de Blitz of haar moderne opleving met grote bedrijven en vrije tijd. We bezoeken bekende oude pubs, plaatsen van uitvoering en fantastische filantropie, evenals locaties met betrekking tot enkele van de meest beroemde namen in de geschiedenis, zoals Captain Cook, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Frobisher, Sir Walter Raleigh, Charles Dickens, Hanging Judge Jeffers en Captain Bligh. Zie een deel van het echte Londen dat toeristen nooit konden vinden, ver weg van de felle lichten van het West End, theaters, musea en paleizen.

We beginnen in de futuristische Docklands
Eens de havens waar schepen van de Canarische Eilanden hun handel uitoefenden.
We passeren het Docklands Museum van Londen en leren over de geschiedenis van deze oude gebouwen en werven.
Voordat we hier aankomen, bezoeken we de beroemde Grapes Pub vanwaar Sir Walter Raleigh vertrekt en met links naar Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Sherlock Holmes en vele anderen.
Dit oude handelsdok is nu een luxe jachthaven.
Deze oude pub heeft sterke banden met beroemde schilders, schrijvers en zelfs royalty's. Zat vlak bij de rivier, kunnen we naar beneden gaan als het tij is.
Vanaf de oude trap aan het einde van Narrow Street kunnen we zien waar Martin Frobisher op weg ging om The Northwest Passage te ontdekken.
De Thames River Police is de oudste politiemacht ter wereld. Ze patrouilleren nog steeds over de rivieren en houden een oogje in het zeil voor misdaden zoals moord en zelfmoord.
Op de hoek van Dundee Street zullen we de oude rechtbank zien voor moorden en zelfmoorden voordat hij over William Peckover hoorde die misschien het meest ongelooflijke stuk zeevaartnavigatie in de geschiedenis heeft uitgevoerd.
Deze beroemde oude pub is de geboorteplaats van misschien wel onze grootste schilder. Voordien was het de plaats van hekserij!
Een prachtige oude rooms-katholieke kerk
Henry Raine was een rijke brouwer en bezat een familiebedrijf en een gulle filantroop die een school oprichtte voor de arme meisjes en jongens in Wapping, die nu een van de beste in het land is.
Hier hebben de veroordeelde piraten hun laatste drankje gedaan voordat ze aan de rivier de Theems werden opgehangen langs de trappen die we binnenkort zullen bezoeken. Daarna door naar St Johns Church met connecties naar Captain Cook en president Jefferson
Deze oude pub en de nabijgelegen trappen dateren uit 1460 en hebben meer geschiedenis gezien dan sommige steden. Captain Bligh (wiens huissite we bezoeken) is hier aan boord gegaan van HMS Bounty. Een boef die de kroonjuwelen stal, werd hier gepakt samen met de gehate opziener Jeffers. Velen een piraat en een crimineel hebben hier ook hun gruwelijke einde bereikt.
De tour eindigt in de schaduw van Tower Bridge en de Tower of London in een oude haven die nu het huis is van luxe jachten en boten van de rijken en beroemdheden.

- We hebben deze tour aangemerkt als bijzonder veilig tijdens de uitbraak van het Coronavirus vanwege over het algemeen rustige plaatsen die we bezoeken waar sociale afstandelijkheid over het algemeen geen probleem is. Al onze tours zijn privé, dus het is alleen jij / je familie en je gids. Om het voor alle betrokkenen gemakkelijker en veiliger te maken, raden we aan deze tour iets later dan normaal te beginnen, misschien rond 10.30-11 uur, waardoor we allemaal de spits kunnen missen. We komen graag nog steeds naar je hotel om je te ontmoeten, maar voorlopig raden we je aan om ons te ontmoeten bij het startpunt van de tour. Hierdoor kunt u met een taxi of uber komen in plaats van met het openbaar vervoer. Voel je vrij om tijdens of tijdens de tour maskers te dragen. Je gids heeft ook een masker bij zich.

This was excellent and brought to life the East End of London and Wapping area. Made even more special by our authentic, passionate, and very knowledgable Cockney guide - Kevin - what an absolute gem. Now understand the historical meaning of robbing Peter to pay Paul - and it appears to be still happening in the modern day …. Nods as good as wink to a blind beggar…!!

It was a tour organised by my partner as a birthday present. Have to say, was such a wonderful delight. Living in East London, we had no idea about all the treasures which this area had to offer. Kevin, our guide during the tour, has such a remarkable command over history, which he narrates in an impeccable and engaging manner. To top it all off, he is really friendly and warm, which made the experience really pleasurable. Time literally flew by, whilst learning so much about East London and its famous pubs!!! Our guide, Kevin, met us at our local tube station and we set off for Canary Wharf, a new financial district of London. Kevin was able to give us some real insight into the transformation of this area since he was born and raised in the East End. We stopped at four historic pubs and even had the opportunity to go mudlarking, i.e., scavenging, on the shores of the Thames at low tide. This is an area that even many Londoners are not familiar with and Kevin provides the local knowledge along with an absolute wealth of historical background. Don't miss this one!

We were met on time in our hotel and after introductions headed out to Wapping. Our guide Kevin was extremely familiar with the area since his family had worked there and as a child he spent a lot of time there. The tour wandered in and out of the old warehouses and Kevin explained how the old docks worked. Because my husband and I are interested in architecture and military history Kevin included a lot of information on those subjects also. The tour included quite a few hours, it was so informative that we did not even feel the time passing. His knowledge was impressive, his candor and honesty on many subjects and his warm personality made us feel at the end of the tour that we made a friend....and we will keep in touch....thank you Kevin
I was interested in the Wapping/East East area due to a few recent reads. While in some ways it was disappointing in that so little of the old docks area is still intact, Kevin filled in incredible amounts of information so that you could wrap your mind around how the area might have looked 100 or 500 years ago. We wove in and out of the neighborhoods, along the river and former sites of the river, and by particular pubs and churches of note, and the historical detail Kevin provided along the way was just excellent. He even spent time taking me mud-larking (new to me). I really feel like this was a unique experience. I wanted to see the "non-tourist" side of London, and Kevin delivered.

It’s easy to see how London has more construction work going in than the whole of a Europe put together. We too get sad when some of the old places get redeveloped and though most of the docks are now very modern, hopefully some of the old cobbled streets, pubs, churches and warehouses give a bit of old atmosphere. You never quite know what you will find when you down to the Thames, anything from bones to Roman and medieval treasures to WW2 bombs!
