Door de verscheidenheid en hoge concentraties aan minerale zouten zijn een prehispanisch irrigatiesysteem en verschillende watervallen nu versteend. Er is een reeks kleine natuurlijke poelen uitgegraven om een esplanade te vormen die "het amfitheater" wordt genoemd, van waaruit u het prachtige landschap kunt bewonderen. Er zijn twee verschillende niveaus: op het lagere niveau zijn er bronnen en het irrigatiesysteem, en op het bovenste niveau zijn er faciliteiten voor bezoekers.
Mitla. De naam in Nahuatl betekent "plaats van de doden", terwijl de Zapoteken het lyobaa noemden, wat "begraafplaats" betekent. Mitla was een verblijfplaats voor de Zapoteekse priesterklasse. Het werd bewoond vanaf de klassieke periode van Monte Albán (100 tot 650 na Christus), en bereikte zijn hoogtepunt in de postklassieke periode (750 tot 1521 na Christus). De lay-out van de stad was waarschijnlijk gepland met structuren gegroepeerd in vijf sets, momenteel de kolommen, de kerk, de stroom, de Adobes en het zuiden genoemd. Santa Maria El Tulé. Een van de natuurlijke schoonheden van deze stad is de enorme, ahuehuete cipres genaamd "El Árbol del Tule". De boom is een prachtig voorbeeld van de Oaxaca-flora, 40 meter hoog met een diameter van 52,58 meter, weegt ongeveer 509 ton en is ongeveer 2000 jaar oud. We raden u aan de ambachtelijke markt van de gemeenschap te bezoeken en de grote verscheidenheid aan lokale gerechten te proeven.
Teotitlan del Valle. In deze stad worden wollen tapijten gemaakt op weefgetouwen. De ambachtslieden gebruiken hier natuurlijke kleurstoffen zoals indigo, mos en grana cochinilla. We nemen je mee naar het huis van een ambachtsman om het proces van het maken van een vloerkleed te zien. Mezcal-fabriek. Misschien wel de meest bekende drank die uit Mexico komt, is er een gemaakt van de agaveplant: tequila. Maar er is nog een ander drankje afgeleid van de agave, een minder bekend maar net zo krachtig: Mezcal. En de laatste tijd gaat het steeds meer hip en chic, niet alleen in Mexico maar ook in het buitenland. De New York Times publiceerde onlangs een artikel over deze hernieuwde bekendheid van deze gedistilleerde drank in New York en daarbuiten. We nemen je mee naar een mezcal-distilleerderij waar je alles over Mezcal kunt ontdekken. Je moet het proberen, Mezcal is de nieuwe tequila! Zoals het oude gezegde luidt: "Para todo mal, mezcal, y para todo bien, también" (voor elk kwaad, mezcal, ook voor elke charme).

The choice of places was very good. There was a lot of driving between them. We were 18 people 4 of whom were Spanish speakers. The guide, Ede, gave descriptions and instructions in Spanish first and then English. She spoke very quickly and was not easy to understand. She told us about the first two places, but said very little after about the history or stories associated with the rest. At Hierve de Aqua she described 3 possible paths to take which were not that apparent on arrival. She spent most of the travel time chatting with the Spanish speakers. We've been on many tours with wonderful guides but unfortunately she did not meet that standard.
Hierve el Agua is the main attraction, but it was nice to see some other things in the area as well. The Tule tree is huge, not something that I would go take a trip to see on its own, but good to include with the tour. Mitla is interesting, I didn't even know about this before taking the tour. I don't drink but the mezcal factory was interesting to see how it's made, my friends enjoyed the tastings, there was plenty to taste too. Our last stop was the Teotitlán del Valle wool factory. If you're into fabric it could be interesting seeing the processes. Overall a nice tour, thanks Bamba!
Really nice Mercedes Sprinter van with comfortable seats, great A/C, each seat had a usb charging outlet for you phone, and movies shown while driving. The guide spoke great English and was very knowledgeable and funny. We got to spend a very small amount of time at each place, approximately 30 minutes or so, but an hour and 20 at Hierve de Agua.
This trip was so cheap, the price range is about 20 dlls per person but it is a full day tour to go see the necrópolis at Mitla, taste about 9 types of Mezcal. We hired a company called El Andador tours and the tourguide had lots of helpful suggestions on where to get the best mole, chocolate, and the famous Oaxacan string cheese.

My boyfriend and I really wanted to visit Hierve el Agua as we both love nature and being outdoors, plus had heard great things. When researching how to get there, it looked like taking the tour was the easiest way to get there, plus it was pretty cheap. What we didn’t realize, is that we would only be spending an hour at hierve out of the entire 8/9 hour trip. For us, we didn’t really care about the mezcal tasting, going into Mitla etc. So basically a huge waste of time for us. If you like that kind of stuff, you might enjoy it. Also, there was one tour guide for about 30 people (so it was a huge group). Some people in the group spoke Spanish, some English. The tour guide had to go back in between both languages and spent more time speaking in Spanish than English to explain what we were seeing/doing. At the mezcal tour, the facility was so packed with other tour groups that we could barely hear what the tour guide was saying, and spent only about 10 mins on the tour before being ushered to the bar. Also, we didn’t eat the buffet because we weren’t hungry, so this was also a big waste of time. Lastly, Hierve El Agua was the last stop on our trip. To give you an idea, we got in the car at 10 am, didn’t get to Hierve until 5:40 pm and had one hour there. Bottom line: Hierve El Agua was stunning and so worth going to. We wished we had taken a private car, and if you are mostly looking to visit hierve, we suggest you do not do the tour.
If you want a mescal fuelled tour with chaotic organisation, then this is for you. If not, choose another operator. Our bus arrived 25 minutes late with a driver who did not seem to know his way around Oaxaca. The guide was not with the bus but was picked up en route. After a short visit at Tule we moved onto visits to a textile workshop which was fine, and the a mezcal distillery. We spent far too much time here as our guide continued with his drinking which began as soon as he got on the bus. Thus we did not get to Mitla until well after 3.00 and Hierve El Agua after 5.00. On the return to Oaxaca, our guide's English completely disappeared as he rambled on about food and drink to the Spanish speakers who were still listening and sharing his mezcal. The drop offs to the hotels were chaotic following no discernible pattern as criss crossed between old and new parts of the city. We were the last to be dropped off at 8.30 at which point we were directing the bus. Totally unprofessional and to be avoided.
Great tour and well-led. There are two opportunities to buy items (mezcal and woven goods) but not high pressure.
