Mis niet de kans om de grootste katholieke tempel in Brazilië en de grootste kathedraal ter wereld, de kathedraalbasiliek van het nationale heiligdom van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Aparecida, te verkennen. Miljoenen pelgrims uit alle delen van Brazilië bezoeken elk jaar het heiligdom om de Heilige Maagd Maria te eren en de monumentale tempel te bewonderen. Het heiligdom ligt op het platteland, ongeveer 2:00 uur van de stad São Paulo, bereikbaar met de auto. Om elk jaar ongeveer 12 miljoen pelgrims te verwelkomen, biedt het heiligdom zijn toegewijden een oppervlakte van meer dan 1,3 miljoen vierkante meter, met ongeveer 143.000 vierkante meter bebouwde oppervlakte gevuld met een groot aantal attracties. De belangrijkste reden voor de bezoeken is religieus. Vergezeld door een gids, bezoek het Nationaal Heiligdom, passeer het beeld van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Aparecida en wissel blikken met haar uit, neem deel aan een Heilige Mis, doe verzoeken, bedank ontvangen genaden, betaal beloften, waardeer vakmanschap, majestueuze vormen en glas-in-loodramen .

Nadat je bent opgehaald bij je hotel in São Paulo, rijden we 2 uur naar het heiligdom, gelegen in de stad Aparecida in de staat São Paulo.
De tempel, de grootste van het land, herbergt het 36 cm-beeld van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Aparecida. Het heiligdom is het grootste ter wereld gewijd aan Mather Mary. Jaarlijks passeren 12 miljoen pelgrims, waardoor het het belangrijkste pelgrimsoord in Brazilië is. Naast het beeld heeft de basiliek de kapel van de kaarsen, waar de toegewijden bidden. Elk weekend wordt er tot 10 ton paraffine afgevoerd. In de Hall of Promises zijn duizenden objecten en foto's van toegewijden die wonderen hebben gemeld.
Voetgangersbrug van het geloof De structuur is 392 meter lang en bereikt op het hoogste punt een hoogte van 35 meter, verbindt het nationale heiligdom van Aparecida met de oude basiliek. De loopbrug is een traditionele bedevaartsplaats voor pelgrims die velen op hun knieën kruisen om beloften aan Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Aparecida te betalen. De loopbrug biedt ook een panoramisch uitzicht op de grootste katholieke tempel van Brazilië.
Oude Basiliek De kerk staat bekend als de oude basiliek en bevindt zich in het centrum van de stad Aparecida en was vroeger een ontmoetingsplaats voor pelgrims vóór de bouw van het nationale heiligdom. De twee kerken zijn tegenwoordig met elkaar verbonden door de loopbrug van het geloof. Met de werkzaamheden begonnen in 1845 en voltooid in 1888, kreeg de kerk in 1908 de titel Basiliek van Aparecida van het Vaticaan. In 1982 werd het geklasseerd als een monument van historisch, religieus en architectonisch belang.
De kabelbaan verbindt het nationale heiligdom met de heuvel van Santo Cruzeiro. Gemiddeld rijden er zo'n 2000 bezoekers per dag op de auto's. Het gedeelte van de kabelbaan is ongeveer 1.170 meter lang en 115 meter hoog en gaat over een nabijgelegen snelweg.
De heuvel van Santo Cruzeiro is bereikbaar met de kabelbaan. Toegewijden beklimmen ook de Morro do Cruzeiro in processie om de kruisweg te gedenken. Onderweg heeft het 14 stations die herinneren aan de laatste stappen van Jezus Christus naar de Golgotha. De heuvel is 900 meter lang en 83 meter hoog.
Na zo'n spirituele dag te hebben gehad, reizen we terug naar de stad São Paulo waar de tour begon. We gaan in gesprek over uw interesses en onze expertise, of dat nu religie of culturele geschiedenis van het gebied kan zijn.

Our visit to Yala National Park was one of the highlights of our Sri Lanka trip! The park is absolutely stunning — a perfect blend of forest, grasslands, and lagoons that are home to an incredible variety of wildlife. We were lucky enough to spot leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and countless species of birds — all within just a few hours. Our safari guide was extremely knowledgeable and respectful of the animals, keeping a safe distance while ensuring we didn’t miss any great sightings. The early morning drive was magical — golden sunrise, fresh air, and the sound of nature all around. The park is well-managed, and you can feel the effort to protect the natural environment. If you visit, I highly recommend booking a private jeep for a more peaceful experience and starting your safari early to catch the wildlife at its most active. Overall, Yala is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves nature, photography, or adventure. It truly captures the wild spirit of Sri Lanka!
Excursion to the Jewel in the Crown Having recently returned from an organised trip to Rajasthan, Northern India, we feel compelled to write a glowing review about our experience!! From the outset-when we were greeted in the arrivals hall at New Delhi International Airport by the lovely Kusum Rana-ever professional and efficient-to our departure thirteen days later. Everything operated seamlessly, highly efficiently and on time! We are ever so grateful to our driver Aashish Gandi for his attention to detail, keeping the transport car spotlessly clean as he drove us from Delhi to Agra, onwards to Jaipur, to Jodhpur and finally to Udaipur. We were kept entertained en route as he regaled us with facts & information about each of the cities which we visited. Our guide Singit? in Delhi was excellent-very professional and patient with us as we stopped to take photos-a lot! When in Agra our guide Naeem Ullah was sublime!! His photography skills are like watching an artist at work! Thanks to Naeem's attention to detail, both Dee & I now own THE most amazing photos of the glorious Taj Mahal at both sunrise and sunset! Naeem's knowledge of local history and politics makes him an extraordinary guide! Next to Jaipur-our wonderful guide Singh was a fountain of knowledge on Temples, museums and the Observatory-throughout, he was professional, good-humoured and highly knowledgeable! In Jodhpur, we were educated by the highly professional Hari Shankar Jangid-tour guide extraordinaire! Bhupendra Singh Hada in Udaipur was so charming & suave, paying great attention to detail as he gave us a fabulous introduction to lovely Udaipur with an evening boat ride on the lake-such magnificent views! Upon arrival at each of our destinations, we were greeted with the utmost of professionalism and in a timely fashion by yet another highly trained Trans India Representative. The Balkans are not to be missed. The Old Forts, & Walled Cities to Caves, Lakes & streams, and great Wine. We used Unforgettable Tours. They designed both the sea and land portions of our vacation. The yacht was a gorgeous 170-foot motor yacht, allowing a max of 36 guests. We saw the Croatian coast and numerous islands. We swam every day in the clearest Adriatic Sea, ate fine food on board, along with some live entertainment. The best part was being close to and getting to know the guests, unlike large boats. Our land portion was with a private car and driver. We would be taken and dropped off to a local private tour guide. No groups, just my wife and myself. Never rushed, always able to hear and understand the guide. Every tour was wonderful and all in different ways, so no day was ever boring or repetitive.

Our day visit to Aitutaki, Cook Islands, in March 2025 was truly amazing! A must visit to be done at least once in a life- time, particularly if visiting Raro! Starting with the morning pick up shuttle bus from the Edgewater resort to the Rarotonga airport and then onto the hours' round tour of the Aitutaki island and next, the hop- on hop - off visits to the various islands cruising inside the spacious Waka ferry boat which included a scrumptious buffet lunch was truly a fabulous experience! There were 3 of us staying a total of 10 days. Lindsey and Jay helped us set up with 2 units the first few days then had us set up for the 2 bedroom for the last week. Plenty of comfort, space and relaxation. Jay provided us with several options on getting to the island well before we needed to travel so we could make the best choice for us. We ended up using an 8 passenger plane and a taxi from there to CoCo Loco. The instructions provided ahead of time made it super easy! The trip was exceptional and made even better by having Lindsey and Jay as our hosts.

Our stay at the Americus Garden Inn was an amazing highlight of our 3 wk trip to the Southeast. We had been looking for an interesting place to spend a few days between our bike tour from Charleston to Savannah and visiting friends in Atlanta. We couldn't have found a more wonderful place! Susan & Kim handle all aspects of the best Bed & Breakfast that we have ever visited. They made us feel special and so very comfortable in their beautiful antebellum home. Attention to detail was clear from the decor to the cleanliness to the availability of anything we might want or need. The three course breakfasts were delicious, freshly made from scratch to our dietary preferences. Susan is an amazing cook and an artist with the beautiful presentation of each dish. Our only regret is that we live so far away in Portland OR and we can only hope that we get another opportunity to stay with Susan & Kim in the future.
