Na de ontmoeting bij de afgesproken opstapplaats vertrekt de tour naar Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve, op 50 minuten rijden van Bakoe. De eerste stop is het Gobustan Museum, gelegen naast het Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape. Dit moderne museum laat gasten kennismaken met het oude erfgoed van de regio, met meer dan 6.000 rotsgravures uit de steentijd die jachttaferelen, rituelen, dieren en het dagelijks leven illustreren. Gasten verkennen het museum met hun privé Gids gedurende 40 minuten voordat ze verder gaan naar de nabijgelegen Gobustan Rock Shelters, op een kleine 3 minuten rijden.
Bij de Rock Shelters komen bezoekers een van Azerbeidzjans belangrijkste UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocaties tegen. Het gebied bevat prehistorische petrogliefen die teruggaan tot 40.000 jaar, samen met natuurlijke grotten die ooit werden gebruikt als woningen en verzamelplaatsen door vroege menselijke gemeenschappen. De tour gaat vervolgens verder naar de beroemde Gobustan Mud Volcanoes, gelegen op 20 minuten van de Rock Shelters. Azerbeidzjan bezit meer dan de helft van de moddervulkanen ter wereld, en Gobustan is de thuisbasis van ongeveer 50 van hen. Het landschap is voorzien van actieve modderputten, kegels en borrelende poelen die ontstaan door aardgas dat modder naar de oppervlakte duwt. Vanuit Gobustan vertrekt de tour terug richting Bakoe met een laatste culturele stop bij de Bibi-Heybat Moskee. De rit van de Mud Volcanoes naar de moskee duurt 60 minuten. Deze bezienswaardigheid, herbouwd op de plaats van een 13e-eeuws heiligdom, is een van de belangrijkste religieuze monumenten in de regio. Gasten besteden 15 minuten aan het verkennen van de moskee en leren over de historische betekenis van hun privé Gids. Na het bezoek aan de moskee omvat de tour een korte stop bij de historische oliebron in de buurt, een van de vroegste oliewinningspunten in de Absheron-regio. We used this private tour for two consecutive days. It was extremely convenient to be able to incorporate it into our own schedule while taking our other sightseeing plans into account. Access to Gobustan National Park is quite limited, and traveling by car is definitely the best option. While it’s possible to book a car through an app each time, you may end up waiting a long time if the timing is bad. In that sense, a private tour with a dedicated vehicle is undoubtedly the best choice. Our guide, Shahriyar Malikli, and our driver, Vugar, picked us up from our specified location. They were also very accommodating whenever we requested to stop by additional sightseeing spots along the way. They proved to be highly reliable partners for a private tour. Next time we visit, and whenever friends of ours plan a trip to Baku, we will definitely recommend them!
This tour was a fantastic experience and highly enriching from start to finish. Our guide, Shahryiar, was extremely knowledgeable and provided detailed explanations throughout the journey. What stood out most was how he brought history to life—explaining how people lived during the Paleolithic and Stone Age, while thoughtfully comparing it with developments in other parts of the world. It gave a much deeper, global perspective that I hadn’t expected. The visit to the mud volcanoes was also fascinating, and Shahryiar shared clear and engaging insights into their formation and significance. I also really enjoyed seeing the Bibi-Heybat Mosque and the shipyard at the South Port. The mosque was beautiful and serene, while the shipyard was a unique highlight—something you don’t get to see every day, which made the experience even more memorable. Our driver, Vugar, was very professional and ensured a smooth and comfortable ride throughout the day, even on mountainous terrain and unpaved roads. We felt safe at all times. The best part of this experience is that it’s a private tour, so you have the flexibility to spend more time at the spots that interest you most. That level of customization made the tour even more valuable. I would especially recommend this tour to business travelers visiting Baku who want to make the most of their limited time, as well as to anyone looking for a tour with in-depth, professional historical explanations.
