You almost get what you pay for. This was a cheap tour and I after going on it, I know why. This was guided in the loosest sense, in that our guide did pick us up and take us back, but disappeared fully for the entirety of the hike. At breakfast, he disappeared and our group approached another group to see what we should do. Our guide made an appearance, waved us off and we left with the other group. That guide was around for the first few steps, then helped people with horses and we did not see him again. We walked the trail with other confused participants and asked for clarification from civilians about where to go or what to do along the way. We returned to town and no one was in sight. We were there for 2-2.5 hours before our guide returned. He asked us where members of our group were, having no idea if we all made it back safely. The hike was pretty, but not worth the confusion. This was not a guided experience, it was essentially a taxi ride to the hike and back with some mediocre meals in between. There are many other things to do that are far more appealing in Cusco. Skip this one.
Our guide Jonathan (for us, Jonny) is very knowledgeable, kind, and attentive to all the people in the group. He is a very experienced guide in mountain fields, from nutrition and acclimatization to advice. 5 stars for Jonny
The trek itself is very rewarding. The guide was fine spoke good English and was enthusiastic. The journey back and forth is drama. It takes a long time and there are only a few places on the bus where you can sit properly, let alone if you are a bit taller like most Europeans. Downside we found that according to the booking there were walking sticks included which then turned out not to be present on location, if you take that into account that is a setback.
We signed up for this tour just a few days before it would begin. We were told they’d pick us up at our hotel but the night before we received a WhatsApp message saying meet at Jacks Cafe @ 430am. 9 minute walk, no problem. We got to Jack’s Cafe at 430am and it was very hectic. 30 tour vans and everyone looking for their correct van. 30 mins later they all left and it was just me and my fiancee waiting, everyone else found their vans. I thought we were not going to be picked up, I started texting and calling Chullo’s travel and no answer. Suddenly we got a call and the person said we will be there in one minute and they were. The tour was amazing. Left at 5am, took 3 hours to arrive. Amazing buffet breakfast with bread, butter, coffee, tea sausage and eggs. Hiked for 6 hours, absolutely stunning nature. Then lunch was great too, rice and pork, French Fries and other things. Would highly recommend.
We had such a great time and it was the second time we had booked through Chullos Travel Peru. This time our host was Jonathan. We started off quietly (all on board the bus by 4:45am) so Jonathan let us all rest on the long journey to our breakfast location. Once we arrived at breakfast Jonathan was very informative and gave us great advice about what to eat, what to avoid and what clothes would be best suited for the day. It can get windy on the lakes at times, but this day was not bad and I only wore two layers for most of the walking trip. You will need to wear a lot more for the initial journey in the bus. After breakfast we started on our 4 to 5 hour journey by foot. Jonathan let us know what to expect in terms of when the trip would be a little more difficult. Overall the walking with regards to steepness and difficulty was not hard at all. It is more the duration that makes you tired. We were acclimatised to the altitude but were tired by the end of the journey. Some of the lakes were stunning and I recommend seeing the little red lake (still part of the first lake we visited) as I found this much more attractive than the main part of the lake. Once we visited all the lakes it is a circular journey that meets the first leg of the original journey. It is mainly downhill on the return. Getting back to the restaurant for lunch and a rest was well earned and after less than an hour we were back on the road. There are multiple stops for the toilet costing between 1-2 soles and various places to buy water from the locals.
Jonathan was an extremely friendly and attentive guide who always kept an eye on all participants in his group. The beginning of the hike is somewhat challenging, and the altitude should not be underestimated, but after the first section, the path becomes significantly more pleasant and the lakes are quickly reached. The tour is also less touristy, allowing one to enjoy nature in a calm and authentic atmosphere. Along the way, one encounters llamas, and the view is simply breathtaking.
We did the Asangate – 7 Lagoas tour with the Jonhatan and it was simply excellent. I recommend 100%! In addition to the amazing scenery and great driving throughout the trekking, a special highlight tb goes to the restaurant run by the locals. The food was sensational, prepared with great care, and was easily one of the best meals we had during our trip to Peru. Their work and the culture of the community are highly valued. Our experience was impeccable from beginning to end!
Today the tour of 7 lagoons with Jonathan was incredible, unique views, totally recommended.
The scenery was beautiful. But the trip was long and Alberto the guide was not good. The trip there was uncomfortable as there was no heat in the van. The guide spent 20 mins searching for the breakfast spot, then was in a hurry in the hike because we were behind schedule. He set a blistering pace, rarely waiting for anyone. At one point our entire group took a break with him nowhere in sight. We completed what was described as a 5-hr hike in 3.25 hrs! One person got sick because of the pace at that high altitude. He offered approximately no help to the sick person. He provided little in the way of information, and was poor in communication generally. The hot tub portion of trip didn’t happen, but it was never explained why.
Nice hike up to mountain lakes. No steep climbs.
