Ontdek de prachtige Maya-steden rond het meer van Atitlan, het meest magnifieke schouwspel ooit. Met inheemse vrouwen in veelkleurige outfits, vissers in rustieke ambachten en de schoonheid van de drie omringende vulkanen: San Pedro, Toliman & Atitlan. Santiago Atitlan, de stad die meer wordt bezocht vanwege hun prachtige Guipil (blouse) en de oud-katholieke kerk met een combinatie van Maya en Spaanse cultuur. Om de laatste stad om te bezoeken af te ronden is San Juan la Laguna, een unieke stad met coöperaties van natuurlijke kleurstoffen, schilderkunst en geneeskrachtige planten.

Hier begint de tour. Bij aankomst heeft u ongeveer 45 minuten de tijd om te ontbijten (niet inbegrepen). Daarna loop je naar de kade om de boot te nemen. Panajachel, ook wel bekend als "Pana", is een charmante stad gelegen aan de oever van het meer van Atitlan. Is het belangrijkste centrum van het gebied, reden waarom hier de meeste hotels, restaurants, uitgaansgelegenheden, uitgaanscentra en winkels geconcentreerd zijn. Ideaal om handwerk te kopen en bij te dragen aan het lokale toerisme.
Eerste stad om te bezoeken. San Juan la Laguna, een schilderachtig stadje aan de westelijke oever van het meer, er zijn verschillende coöperaties: van imkers, koffietelers tot wevers van weefgetouwen, die werken met natuurlijke kleurstoffen. Met behulp van voorouderlijke technieken extraheren ze kleurstoffen uit boomschors, groenten, kokosnootschalen enzovoort om hun producten te kleuren.
Tweede stad om te bezoeken San Pedro la Laguna, verspreid over een schiereiland aan de voet van de gelijknamige vulkaan. Het is net zo beroemd als Panajachel, het is de favoriete plek van veel buitenlandse toeristen, die gefascineerd zijn door de rust van de omgeving.
Derde stad om te bezoeken: Santiago Atitlan het is een plaats met veel natuurlijke schoonheid en kleur, zowel vanwege het handwerk dat er gemaakt wordt als voor de klederdracht van de bewoners. De bewoners dragen hun streekkostuum en de vrouwen dragen kleurrijke huipiles (blouses) geweven in wit katoen met geometrische motieven en kleine vogels. Veelkleurig geborduurd in de taille, en de cortes (rokken) bestaan uit een stuk stof dat om de taille is gewikkeld; Er wordt ook een lint gebruikt, tocoyal genaamd, dat ongeveer 20 meter lang is en om het hoofd is gewikkeld. In deze prachtige stad staat de kerk van Santiago Apóstol, deze werd gebouwd in 1547. Het is een van de oudste kerken in Guatemala en daarin kun je het syncretisme waarderen, vooral in het hoofdaltaarstuk. Er is ook een Maya-idool genaamd "Maximón" van onbekende oorsprong.

Als u in Guatemala-Stad verblijft en u wilt deelnemen aan de tour, kunnen wij u coördineren met privévervoer vanuit Guatemala en u naar Antigua brengen om onze bus te halen. (Bijkomende kosten) Je koopt een gedeelde dienst, dit betekent dat meerdere mensen aan de tour deelnemen. Het busje zal enige vertraging oplopen doordat reizigers niet op tijd klaar zijn, of een verkeerd adres hebben opgegeven. Wees alstublieft geduldig.

- Terugkeer naar Antigua rond 18.30-19.00 uur. Alles zal afhangen van het verkeer en de groep.
- Als u langer van het meer wilt genieten en daar een nacht wilt doorbrengen, kunnen wij graag het vervoer terug naar Antigua de volgende dag zonder extra kosten coördineren. Laat ons bij het boeken weten dat u de volgende dag terug moet komen. U kunt kiezen voor gedeeld vervoer dat vertrekt vanuit Panajachel om 12.00 uur of 16.00 uur. - ACCOMMODATIE IS OP JE EIGEN. -

The good: the lake is very beautiful, our excellent guides Elena and Verónica, the visit to the bees and the textile cooperative in San Juan, with the talented Amanda. The peaceful return trip. The bad: the outbound trip - bus without seatbelts, a "daring" driver (several of us arrived very nauseous), the incomprehensible visit to the shaman, the brief stop in San Rafael. The areas for improvement: less emphasis on shopping, more on enjoying the lake and learning about the history of those who inhabit it.
The lake and the four towns around it that we visited are fantastic! Incredible views, very interesting geography, history, and culture. The pickup was timely. Our guides, Elena and Verónica were simply superb. Couldn't be better: friendly, knowledgeable, informative, helpful.

Driver Frank was great. Local tour guides and people on lake towns not so much. It was ok with San Juan being nice for pictures. You inly send 30 mnts in San Pedro but really not much to see there anyway. In Santiago the best way to see the most is by paying extra to take a tuctuc. The best thing was the art gallery where we were able to see beautiful and different paintings depicting Guatemalan culture and daily activities. Food and service were not good and people were not very nice or customer service oriented. If you don't have much time and want to see the lake, this is a good option.

Lots of aggressive selling by the at all the stops along the lake so just be prepared- it was beyond frustrating.
It was a beautiful day and everything was so peaceful and well planned out. It was an easy transition from the moment they pick you up at the hotel to the lake, and vice-versa. Make sure you bring Q500 cash and sunscreen!
Getting to the lake is a two hour ride, through many busy rural towns and great landscapes. Good breakfast options are made available before boarding a covered and somewhat cramped fast boat twenty minutes across this massive (127 sq km) surrounded by volcanoes. The three towns are highly tourist oriented so expect to be politely harassed. There are beautiful crafts and bargains to be had - but not in the places you are taken to although the demonstrations of Mayan bee-keeping and uses of honey was well presented and fascinating. Likewise in the textiles studio showing how the cotton plant is turned into the many beautifully coloured items. There are three destinations visited with your private boat, the final one being a large town with an option for a one hour yuk-tuk tour for Q50, which is worth it. The very good quality lunch options happens after the tour and just before crossing back over the lake for the long drive back to Antigua. It makes for a 13 hour day after a very early 5.30am pick up.
Local guide Elena was great. The places we visited were nice, a bit focused on shopping but I don’t mind that, I appreciate the hustle of local artisans. Places where we had breakfast and lunch were ok; even though we ordered lunch in advance to avoid waiting, we still had to wait 20 minutes to be served. Now, the driving was awful. The driver was driving reckless, above the speed limit and using his phone. I was very anxious all the time. I would recommend as long as the driver gets his license revoked.

My girlfriend and I had a great time navigating on lake Atitlan. We got to see the beautiful and colorful towns of San Juan, San Pedro, and Santiago. Tourist guides were very friendly and informative. We recommend anyone visiting Guatemala to take this tour.
