Ken Bradshaw is een professioneel opgeleide gids die de Blue Badge voor Noordoost-Engeland en zal je tour tot leven brengen omdat ik het zal afstemmen op je persoonlijke interesses. We wandelen door de middeleeuwse historische straten en langs de rivier de Wear en laten je de hoogtepunten van deze prachtige historische stad zien. Eigenzinnige achterafstraatjes, grappige uitzichten en actuele bezienswaardigheden zullen beschikbaar zijn om te bekijken. We zullen de colleges zien van een van de grootste onderwijsinstellingen ter wereld: Durham University en ontdekken de levens van talloze personages zoals de kleine graaf van Polen die zijn viool speelde in het Victoriaanse theater, enkele van de machtige prins-bisschoppen en de beruchte kolenbaron, 3e markies van Londonderry wiens standbeeld het marktplein van Durham domineert. Een 900 jaar oude Normandisch-romaanse kathedraal die pionierde met een stenen gewelfd plafond. Het verhaal van de monniken die de kist dragen van de legendarische monnik die wonderen verricht, St.Cuthbert.
Het fort van Durham, gebouwd op bevel van Willem de Veroveraar, onderdrukte de Angelsaksen en bood weerstand aan de Schotse aanval. Veranderd in de loop van vele eeuwen toen opeenvolgende prins-bisschoppen van Durham hun eigen stempel drukten.
Het marktplein, in de 11e eeuw gecreëerd door de flamboyante prins-bisschop Ranuf Flambard, is een centrum van activiteit en staat vol met interessante gebouwen, sculpturen en historische personages.
Een 12e-eeuwse brug in opdracht van prins-bisschop Hugh de Puiset om het land ten oosten van Durham te ontsluiten. Bekijk de overblijfselen van de St.Andrew-chantry, hoor over de beruchte doedelzakspeler Jimmy Allen en ontdek wat Dominic Cummings deed toen hij student was in de op één na slechtste nachtclub van Europa.
Bekijk de prachtige Georgische straat vol met mooie onafhankelijke winkels en herbergen/restaurants en een aantal interessante feiten, eigenzinnige straatgezichten, waaronder de laatst overgebleven delen van de enorme North Gate van het fort van Durham.
Deze brug, gebouwd in 1776, biedt een fantastisch uitzicht op de kathedraal van Durham over de majestueuze rivier de Wear.

I’m from Co Durham originally and was visiting the area with friends from the Midlands. Ken was an excellent guide. He gave us a lot of information about the history of the city and its surrounding towns and villages. It was useful to hear about Lord Londonderry’s influencer in the area as a trip to Seaham was on our itinerary. I would certainly recommend his tours.

Spent a great two hours with Ken. There were just two of us on the tour. He is warm and friendly and knowledgeable. Nice easy tour of beautiful Durham. Ken was a friendly and knowleadgable guide - providing local history and stories with connections to other parts of Britain. We learned a few new things about William the Conqueror and his superstitions as well as an unlikely friendship between a near-giant man and a poetic Polish dwarf. This 2 hour walk also gives some good exercise.

Ken provided a great private walking tour for our group of 8 book club friends who had read the wonderful novel ‘Cuddy’ He had lots of interesting information about characters & buildings in the city & he delivered the tour at an appropriate walking /talking pace.
