De constructie van de verschillende vleugels van het Palazzo Colonna duurde vijf eeuwen en dit leidde tot de overlap van verschillende architecturale stijlen, zowel exterieur als interieur, die het karakteriseren en de verschillende tijdperken van verbondenheid weerspiegelen. Van 1300 tot 1500 presenteerde het zich als een echt familiefort. Oddone Colonna, verkozen paus op 11 november 1417 en nam de naam van Martin V aan, begeeft het paleis naar de Pauselijke Zaal en woont daar van 1420 tot 1431, het jaar van zijn dood. In de sobere zalen van Palazzo Colonna plant en realiseert paus Martino V in tien jaar tijd een groot plan voor culturele, stedelijke en bestuurlijke renaissance van de stad Rome, die in een verwoestende staat verkeert na de gekwelde periode van de gevangenschap van Avignon en van de Westers schisma. In 1527, tijdens de plundering van Rome door de troepen van keizer Carlo V, is Palazzo Colonna een van de weinige gebouwen die niet zijn verbrand dankzij de goede relaties van het gezin met het rijk ...

Beautiful palace with a smaller collection of art work spanning several centuries and styles. Lorenzo was a fantastic guide, providing history and insight. He was also very patient with our limitations. Be aware that like the Vatican, this palace is not air conditioned. They offer umbrellas for walking the gardens, and some windows are open, but it is still very hot in August.

Very few people know about this palace that is only open 2 days a week and definitely worth seeing Our guide Lorenzo was very knowledgeable and gave a great tour of the palace and outside gardens He taught us about the history of the Colonna family and showed us very interesting art work

We had a private tour organised by our hotel of The Gallery, private apartments and gardens of the Palazzo. Our tour English tour guide was called Rebecca Harden and was without doubt the best guide we have ever encountered. She was so knowledgeable and passionate about the history of not only the paintings but the context of their importance in the history of Rome. A truly vivacious and inspiring tour would highly recommend her.
Loved all the art work, of course, and the history presented to us by the guide. The gardens were just breathtaking. That was worth the trip by itself. Not to be missed.
