Haal je op bij je hotel in Cairo, reis naar Alexandrië. Begin de tour met de bibliotheek van Alexandrië; de grootste bibliotheek ter wereld - nu met 8 miljoen boeken. Bezoek het President Sadat Museum en bezoek de open binnenplaats waar je het standbeeld van Alexander de Grote en het standbeeld van Ptolemaeus de eerste kunt zien, dat onder water in de buurt werd gevonden. Onze gids zal het ontwerp van de bibliotheek van buitenaf uitleggen, je krijgt de kans om wat foto's te maken. Let op: de bibliotheek van Alexandrië is gesloten op vrijdag, zaterdag en feestdagen. Om de leesruimte te betreden, moet je een ticket kopen.
Bezoek de binnenkant van de catacomben van Kom El Shokafa, de grootste Romeinse begraafplaats bestaande uit drie niveaus uitgehouwen in de rotsen
U rijdt ook langs de Pilaar van Pompay en stopt voor een fotostop (deze werd gebouwd ter ere van keizer Diocletianus aan het einde van de 4e eeuw)
Bezoek het Romeinse amfitheater van Alexandrië met de tentoonstelling van de gezonken monumenten van Alexandrië die werden ontdekt onder de oostelijke haven van Alexandrië.
Tegenover is de corniche en de oude haven waar u de oude vissersboten, mannen die vissen en traditionele vissers die netten maken kunt zien. De foto's die hier zijn genomen zijn geweldig. Ga verder naar de buitenkant van Quaitbay Castle, dat op dezelfde plek is gebouwd als de oude vuurtoren van Alexandria, een van de zeven wonderen van de antieke wereld. Een zeer spectaculair kasteel dat een geweldige fotostop is.

Our Alexandria day tour was a gorgeous and chaotic and maybe sometimes uncomfortable anthropology lesson wrapped in ancient history. Honestly, our tour guide deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for navigating it with a smile. The sites themselves were stunning. We visited palaces, catacombs, churches, and the literal footprint of an ancient wonder, the former spot Alexandria Lighthouse, now down in the sea. The real wonder for me was how many micro-transactions one city can throw at you in a single day. Let’s be clear, the guide cannot control the tipping culture. But it’s over the top. We went from the bathroom attendants selling squares of toilet paper like they’re dealing high-stakes commodities to or the free mosque shoe storage that magically becomes a hostage negotiation. Egypt is operating in full survival mode, and tourists are the revenue stream. It’s not negativity; it’s reality, so be prepared! Future travelers should know that every greeting, gesture, or opened door comes with a hand extended for baksheesh (tipping). Once you understand that, the day makes a lot more sense: the hustle is simply part of the ecosystem. Our guide made the experience rich, informative, and incredibly smooth, but Alexandria itself is a place where you admire a 2,000-year-old artifact with one eye and keep the other on your wallet. Also, lunch is served at 3:00 PM, not at a normal time so you will be starving. Bring toilet paper and bring lots of snacks and water.

I did the Alexandria tour today with Mohammad Doma. Had a great timr with him. Although with bad weather, he was really accomodtaing. It felt like travelling with a close friend, not a tour guide. If I come ever come again ti Alexandria, will definitely book him again and see the beauty of this city.

In first place the communication and booking with Ms Afaf Emad was very helpful, she contacted me either by email and on Whatsapp to ensure that I go the message, and she replied instantly to any question. 2. Then I met my guide for Alexandria Tour, Mr Karim Serry, who speaks fluent English and French. We visited famous spots in Alexandria (Montazah Park, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Jewel Museum, Fort Qait Bey) and also the real life areas (Women Market, Souk, Citadel). This was a solid trip and I would have rated it higher, however, it was billed as a bird tour and it most definitely was not. (Google birding trip Fayoum to see their description as Trip Advisor won't allow me to add the web address). We did this on 11/10/2018. The guide and driver were kind and helpful but they did not know birds or have any gear. Bring all your own optical gear and books/checklists. Also, you will likely need to tell the guides when you want to stop and look as they won't necessarily do that for you. So, I need to post to all the bird lovers out there that if you want a bird trip to Fayoum then you can do this one or you could look into just hiring a car and driver to take you to the big lake (Qarun). You do need to have a police escort depending on your passport. We are from the U.S. and needed a police escort the whole way. So, that might not be something you can organize yourself. The best birding was right where the road first comes close to the big lake on the way in on the right (before the left into the Tunis pottery neighborhood. You can walk onto the lake shore over some trash and dog poop, set up your scope or camera and get some great looks. Big flocks of overwintering waders, waterfowl, gulls, terns, etc. The Wadi El Rayyan had fewer birds but there were some flamingos, ducks, a few waders and grebes to the right of the boat launch as you walk down from the cafeteria. Great trip, friendly driver and guide but don't expect any help with the birds. Bird on!
