Deze geweldige tour geeft je de mogelijkheid om de geschiedenis van Laconië te ontdekken, een combinatie van Oud-Grieks en (de minder bekende) Middeleeuwse Griekse geschiedenis. Bezoek Sparta, waar Leonidas regeerde en reis terug in het Byzantijnse tijdperk rond torens, paleizen en kerken in Mystras.

We beginnen met een rit langs de kust. Onderweg ziet u enkele Griekse kustplaatsjes en het eiland Salamis (waar de historische zeeslag plaatsvond tussen de Atheners en de Perzen). Onze eerste stop is het kanaal van Korinthe. Geopend in 1892, scheidde het schiereiland Peloponnesos van de rest van Griekenland en verbond het de Saronische Golf met de Korinthische Zee. Je hebt tijd om over een voetgangersbrug te lopen om het kanaal dichterbij te bewonderen, (als je een game bent) op sommige dagen is bungeejumpen een optie.
Na de stop bij het kanaal rijden we richting Mystras en rijden door het bergachtige landschap van het Griekse platteland het zuidelijke schiereiland Peloponnesos in. Als je Mystras bereikt, begrijp je automatisch waarom deze locatie zo uniek is binnen de Griekse sites. Bekend als de spookstad, versterkt op een citadel, is Mystras een van de twee locaties in Griekenland die niet alleen middeleeuwse kerken bewaart, maar ook gewone huizen, herenhuizen en paleizen van het Byzantijnse rijk in combinatie met Frankische elementen.
Wandelend in de site op het bovenste punt bereikt u de citadel en geniet u van een prachtig uitzicht op de omliggende gebieden terwijl u heuvelafwaarts wandelt, ontmoet u de paleizen en de koninklijke binnenplaatsen. Hoewel bekend als de spookstad, zijn de meeste kloosters nog steeds in gebruik en zullen de monniken je graag rondleiden in hun kleine samenleving. Voordat je uitkomt, kom je de kapel van St. Demetrios tegen, op de verdieping bevindt zich een plaquette met een tweekoppige adelaar (het symbool van Byzantium). Het was precies op deze plaat dat Konstantijnse Palaiologos knielde voordat hij werd gekroond tot de laatste keizer van het Byzantium.
Daarna zullen we de rest van onze tijd doorbrengen in Sparta, bekend als de eeuwige rivaliserende stad van de Atheense democratie. Sparta draaide om een andere Cosmo-theorie voor de oude Griekse normen. Oorspronkelijk bekend als de geboorteplaats van Helena van Troje en het koninkrijk van Menelaos (in de Myceense periode), was Sparta in de oud-Griekse periode georganiseerd als een puur militaire samenleving. Het was de stad van de twee koningen waar een paar aristocraten regeerden en natuurlijk de stad waar Leonidas en zijn 300 Spartanen vandaan marcheerden om het Perzische leger Thermopylae te trotseren in 480 BCE.
Verder gaan we langs het stadion waar het standbeeld van koning Leonidas staat en het eindpunt markeert van de Spartathlon-race (Athene - Sparta 245,3 km).
We bezoeken het museum van (olijf- en) olijfolie en leren veel over de meest bekende producten van Griekenland.
We rijden terug naar Athene.

Nikos was a terrific guide. He was on time and in a roomy van. He drove us to the Corinthian canal, took us to Sparta, an olive museum( which is an interest to us), we walked the path in Mystra, had a lovely meal and headed home. We had a lovely day and appreciated how helpful and knowledgeable Nikos was. What a fun day!

Visit to Mystras was excellent. Great walk through the ruins of the Byzantine era city. Spectacular views of the countryside, and a very good lunch in town. Our guide Theodore was great. Very friendly, and he was a wealth of knowledge on the history of the area. The only somewhat dissapointment was Sparta. Visiting Corinth would be a better option for those who haven't been there.
Terry was our guide for this one day trip. He is very knowledgeable and we had a great conversation during the long commute to Sparta. Mystras was mesmerizing and a must visit to the archeological site while Sparta mostly was a stop by experience and we found the visit to the Sparta museum was a tad less luscious. A private tour is expensive but you get to have a more personal and flexible experience which we appreciated.

There is no better way to see Sparta and Mystras and as a fan of hoplite history, getting to see Sparta in person was an unforgettable experience. The statue of Leonidas is absolutely amazing and only a short distance away is the ruins of Mystras. It is easily one of the most beautiful sites to see and is very accessible. Our driver Andreas was also absolutely outstanding, the drive was very enjoyable and he made it all the better with his stories and insight into the areas we drove by. He was flexible with our travel and brought us to a restaurant near Mystras that was unbelievably good. This trip was worth every penny spent!

HIGHLY recommend the drive to Mystras!! Get out of the city and see the countryside!!!! It was BEAUTFUL!! Sparta was incredible. It was more about the atmosphere than the ruins, just the feeling of walking the ancient ruins was magical. Nikos was amazing. Super prompt, accommodating, full of history and FRIENDLY!! He gave us our time to explore how we wished and used the car ride to fill us in on all things Greece. Vehicle was very comfortable and the ride didn’t feel long with all of the amazing conversation.
