Dit is een kleine - groep ervaring ontworpen voor comfort, flexibiliteit en een meer persoonlijke verbinding met Noord-IJsland. In tegenstelling tot grote bustours reizen we in een ontspannen tempo, met tijd voor foto's, korte wandelingen en spontane stops, afhankelijk van de omstandigheden. Met een lokale Gids en chauffeur ervaar je niet alleen de belangrijkste hoogtepunten, maar ook de sfeer en verhalen die deze regio echt bijzonder maken. De tour is zorgvuldig gepland om een soepele dag en een tijdige terugkeer voor cruisepassagiers te garanderen.

Goðafoss, de “Waterval van de Goden”, is een van de meest adembenemende watervallen van IJsland en een waar hoogtepunt van het Noorden. De brede, hoefijzervorm en krachtige flow zorgen voor een onvergetelijke eerste impressie. Volgens de legende gooide de wetspreker Þorgeir hier heidense afgoden in de waterval nadat IJsland meer dan 1000 jaar geleden het christendom had aangenomen. Het water stroomt van Vatnajökull, de grootste gletsjer van IJsland, en afhankelijk van het licht verschuift het van diepblauwe naar melkachtige gletsjertinten. Op zonnige dagen verschijnt er vaak een prachtige regenboog boven de watervallen. Het is een plek die zowel krachtig als vredig tegelijk aanvoelt - perfect voor onvergetelijke foto's en een moment om het gewoon allemaal in je op te nemen.
Een werkelijk unieke plaats op wereldschaal - pseudokraters zoals deze bestaan op slechts enkele plaatsen in de wereld : hier in Noord-IJsland, op Hawaï en zelfs op Mars. Ze ontstonden toen hete lava in het meer stroomde en water onder het oppervlak vasthield. Terwijl het water snel in stoom veranderde, werd druk opgebouwd tot het door de grond explodeerde, waardoor deze perfect gevormde kraterachtige formaties ontstonden. In tegenstelling tot echte vulkanische kraters zijn ze niet gevormd door een uitbarsting van onderaf, maar door krachtige stoomexplosies - waardoor ze een zeldzaam en fascinerend geologisch fenomeen zijn. Tegenwoordig voelt dit gebied rustig en bijna surrealistisch aan, met wijds uitzicht over het meer van Mývatn. Het is de perfecte plek voor een korte wandeling, om het landschap in je op te nemen en om een rustig moment te ervaren in een van IJslands meest ongewone omgevingen.
Dimmuborgir, bekend als het “Donkere Fort”, is een van de meest magische en mysterieuze plekken in IJsland. Dit uitgestrekte lavaveld is gevuld met dramatische rotsformaties die bijna onwerkelijk aanvoelen - deels sprookje, deels buitenwerelds landschap. Volgens IJslandse legendes zijn hier trollen en de beroemde Yule Lads - ondeugende kerstfiguren die diep geworteld zijn in de lokale folklore. Terwijl je door het gebied loopt, begint het landschap met je verbeelding te spelen. Misschien zie je vormen in de rotsen - trollengezichten, wezens, dieren of verborgen figuren - elke formatie vertelt zijn eigen stille verhaal. Het is een plek die je uitnodigt om te vertragen, te verkennen en beter te kijken. Een rustige, bijna magische omgeving waar creativiteit ontwaakt en elke stap iets nieuws onthult.
Grjótagjá is een kleine lavagrot die een van de meest onverwachte bezienswaardigheden in Noord-IJsland verbergt - en binnenstappen is een ervaring op zich. Van buitenaf ziet het er eenvoudig en gemakkelijk te missen uit. Maar eenmaal binnen ontdek je een smalle grot gevuld met intens blauw, stomend geothermisch water dat prachtig contrasteert met het donkere vulkanische gesteente. De kleuren voelen bijna onwerkelijk aan. Net buiten de grot opent het landschap zich om zichtbare tektonische scheuren te onthullen - een plek waar je tussen de Noord-Amerikaanse en Euraziatische platen kunt staan en de aarde langzaam uit elkaar kunt zien trekken. Het is een korte stop, maar een die verrassend krachtig aanvoelt - een verborgen plek die lang na het einde van de tour in je geheugen blijft.
Hverir is een van de meest rauwe en buitenwereldse plekken in Noord-IJsland - een landschap dat dichter bij een andere planeet voelt dan bij iets bekends. Vaak vergeleken met Mars is het een van de visueel meest opvallende stops op de tour. De grond leeft. Stoom stijgt op uit de aarde, blaast gesis en dikke modderbellen in de tinten geel, bruin en dieprood. De kleuren zijn intens, de texturen veranderen voortdurend en het hele gebied voelt alsof het nog steeds onder je voeten wordt gecreëerd. Dit is een plek die al je zintuigen prikkelt - je kunt de energie van de aarde zien, horen en zelfs voelen. De sterke geur van zwavel maakt deel uit van de ervaring, een herinnering dat dit niet alleen een landschap is, maar een actief geothermisch gebied. Het is wild, krachtig en onvergetelijk - een ware blik in de krachten die IJsland vormen.
Earth Lagoon (Mývatn Nature Baths) is meer dan alleen een geothermisch bad - het is een moment waarop je IJsland echt voelt. Het water komt diep onder de grond vandaan, zo’n 2,5 kilometer onder de oppervlakte, en is rijk aan mineralen die bekend staan om hun verzachtende en herstellende werking op lichaam en huid. De melkblauwe kleur zorgt voor een opvallend contrast met het rauwe, open landschap van Noord-IJsland. Als je in het warme water stapt, omringd door opstijgende stoom en rustige ruimte, gaat alles langzamer. De stilte, de hitte en de uitgestrekte omgeving creëren een gevoel dat zowel kalmerend als diep aardend is. Veel mensen vertrekken met een lichter, rustiger en soms zelfs een beetje vernieuwd gevoel. Het is de perfecte manier om de dag af te sluiten - niet door meer te doen, maar door gewoon aanwezig te zijn in het moment.
Op de terugweg naar Akureyri kunt u ontspannen en genieten van de steeds veranderende landschappen van Noord-IJsland - grote open ruimtes, rustige valleien en het gevoel ver van alles te zijn.

Wacht buiten uw accommodatie of op het aangewezen ontmoetingspunt. Als u met een cruiseschip aankomt, ga dan naar de hoofdparkeerplaats bij de haven, waar tourvoertuigen staan. Uw Gids zal daar wachten, in een turkoois/blauw jasje en in de buurt van het voertuig staan. Om een vlotte start te garanderen en drukte te vermijden, gelieve 10 - 15 minuten voor vertrek klaar te staan. We actually did not get to do this particular tour as Viator double booked our tour guide with two different groups on two different tours on the same day. We opted to join her other group on the Diamond Circle Tour and are so glad we did. First stop was Gooafoss, a beautiful waterfall similar to Niagara Falls. Next stop was a quick stop at a quaint harbour town. Then, my favorite, a viewpoint where we saw hundreds of puffins. Next stop was Iceland’s only natural forest where we took a short hike to a beautiful canyon and lake. Then it was on to Dettifoss, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Our last stop was at the Hverir Geothermal Area where We felt like we were on Mars! We saw so much in one day, we even had a few extra stops including one at the tetonic plates. Small group tours are so much better than big bus tours. Besides being able to see more, they can be personalized a bit. And Joanna, with Viltour Tours, was a fantastic guide. She truly cared that each of her customers was satisfied with everything! If you are in Akureyri, I would definitely recommend booking a tour with her!!
Joanna was very timely and professional. She met our ship as soon as we docked and promptly put us in a comfortable van for our of five. She spent the next six or seven hours showing us the area and explaining northern Iceland's natural wonders. I would highly recommend tour.

This was an absolutely fantastic tour! Everything was perfectly organized, and the places we visited – Mývatn, Goðafoss, Grotagja, Nature Baths and Dimmuborgir – were truly breathtaking. An unforgettable trip to the wonderful Iceland with a great tour guide! I went to m first trip to Akureyri in the North of Iceland to see Aurora Borealis at the end of November - beginning of December 2025. No much luck there, I mean I saw the Northern lights but not as spectacular as I expected. Iceland is a fairy land with open spaces, clean air, beautiful landscapes, and adding to that an amazing tour guide like Joanna the trip is just unforgettable. Joanna is positive energetic knowledgeable and friendly and she is brightening everybody’s day. She showed me the stunning Godafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), almost all the key volcano sites in the Lake Mývatn area (at that time the blue lake was frozen), I visited the Christmas village, and of course the sightseeing travelling everywhere was just breathtaking. She is a great driver even with the snow and the ice on the roads and the winds I always felt safe and secure and she was stopping at every spot where she knows the pictures taken and video records show the best of this amazing land. She knows so much about history culture and beauty of the country and she always allows her tourists to enjoy the experience in various spots by themselves. The sky was changing all the time but the colours of the clouds and the sky with sometimes the sun coming out for a brief moment are just incredible. For me the most unexpected experience were the baths. Never in my life I wouldn’t have believed that I will immerse myself outdoors at -15℃ with snow and ice, in geothermal infinity pools with fjord views at Forest Lagoon, or Mývatn Nature Baths with mineral-rich, milky-blue waters, and natural steam baths. A unique experience! I will definitely go back to Akureyri and I whole heartily recommend Joanna as a tour guide if you want the best trip ever.
