Beginnend op de hellingen van de Akropolis, ga je de heilige heuvel binnen door de Propylaea, een imposante marmeren poort rondom de heuvel. Bewonder de prachtige en geïnspireerde constructie van het Parthenon en leer over de tijdperken van aanbidding en vernietiging waarmee het in steenachtige veerkracht is geconfronteerd. Richt je blik op het etherische Erechtheion en zijn iconische kariatiden, de schone meisjes die de prachtige structuur ondersteunen. Leer met je diep geïnformeerde en gepassioneerde gids over de geschiedenis, legendes en mythen die deze oude site omhullen en geniet van een adembenemend uitzicht over Athene en de Egeïsche Zee. Ga met ons mee op deze reis door de tijd en laat je de oorsprong zien van democratie en politieke filosofie zoals we die vandaag kennen.
Vervolgens wordt het tijd om van je reis door de oudheid een van gastronomie te maken! Ontdek het allerbeste van de foodiescene van Athene door lekkernijen te proeven zoals zelfgemaakte gerechten, 'koulouri', 'loukoumades' en nog veel meer lokale favorieten. Leer de lokale bevolking kennen op de levendige centrale markt van Athene en bekijk de enorme verscheidenheid aan vers vlees, vis, groenten en fruit die worden tentoongesteld. Ontdek gespecialiseerde kraampjes, boordevol kleurrijke en aromatische kruiden, specerijen en kruiden; ontmoet echte ambachtslieden, die je zullen laten zien hoeveel tijd, toewijding en liefde hun kostbare lekkernijen produceren. Daar heb je ook de mogelijkheid om enkele van de meest traditionele en authentiek Griekse gerechten te proberen die je maar kunt vinden. Het menu varieert, maar enkele van de meest populaire keuzes zijn 'gemista' - de beroemde in de oven gebakken gevulde groenten -, langzaam gekookt vlees met een zijde van aardappelpuree of pasta, 'fava' - een split erwtendip- en okra-ovenschotel , onder andere. Laat je smaakpapillen pijn doen terwijl je kazen uit heel Griekenland, onweerstaanbare vleeswaren en perfect bereide Griekse koffie proeft. In Griekenland weten we hoe we mensen moeten voeden - vers, heerlijk eten en veel (geen hap bijt hier), dus zorg ervoor dat je honger krijgt!
Je tour eindigt in het beroemde gebied van Monastiraki, de plaats waar verleden en heden van Athene samenkomen. Kom meer te weten over het beroemde Monastiraki-plein, met zijn rommelmarkt en belangrijke historische monumenten, en neem je tour vaarwel in de levendige sfeer van de regio.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Maria-Elena - she is an archeologist by training, spoke fluent English and was a fun to spend time with and learn from. We used greekingme to book many transfers and tours for our family of four (2 adults and 2 teens). We had a truly outstanding experience with every one of them. Our tours included: Private Acropolis Delights Tour (Acropolis & Food), Private Evening Tour with Meze Dinner, and Private Knossos & Food Tour. We also booked our transfers to/from the airport with greekingme as well as some more challenging logistics in Crete where we requested they hold our luggage while taking tours then transfer us to Elounda. Every single driver and guide that we had was outstanding. They were all passionate about sharing their country. They were all also very well educated and spoken outstanding English. The guides were highlights of our trip. I really can't say enough positive things about them. We also felt the vehicles were very nice and the drivers were always where they were supposed to be and on time. Each of our tours involved a food component and all of them were outstanding. I will give special note to our Heraklion food tour. I thought this one might be a bit questionable as Heraklion seemed to be more of an airport/port town. This food tour ended up being one of our teens' favorite activities (they rated it equal to the day we chartered a sailboat in Santorini!). We really enjoyed meeting the various merchants. And, the food was outstanding. It was my daughter's favorite meal of the trip! Really, truly an outstanding experience booking with greekingme!

This tour was recommended to us by friends and I am so glad we booked! Our tour guide was Vera and she is absolutely amazing. She is so knowledgeable and really patience with our boys, 8 and 9. We started off with the Acropolis tour which she really made it so interesting for them, especially all the stories of the Gods. I highly recommend booking the private if you have younger children like us. Following the Acropolis tour we started our food tour which again Vera made extremely interesting and we loved the selection of foods from the traditional breads, the meat and fish markets, our lunch finished with delicious pastries. We travelled to Athens for a family Spring Break trip and couldn't be happier with our experience booking this tour. Our group of 5 included our two children (ages 3 and 5) and the guide did a great job keeping them interested and engaged throughout. The food tour stops were excellent, the history and mythology lessons were interesting and our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. She brought a binder with images and renderings of the historical sights we were seeing and notecards with the Greek gods for the kids. It was great and we highly recommend it.

We were in the port of Piraeus on a cruise and greeking me arranged for a taxi to be waiting for us at the pier. Due to traffic it was about an hour drive to the Acropolis where our tour guide was waiting for us. We were so blessed to have a guide who majored in archeology and was very knowledgeable. The food tour was interesting as well. I especially loved the market and seeing all the fish/meat for sale. They then had a driver ready to take us back to the ship. The communication by email was great and the whole tour ran seamlessly and on time. I highly recommend
