Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Wine Tastings
Vino Nobile was the first wine in Italy to be awarded DOCG status, in 1980, and it is made from Prugnolo Gentile — the local clone of Sangiovese — aged two years before release, three for a Riserva. Tastings run from a quick flight in a cellar on the Corso to sommelier-led verticals and half-days across several estates in the hills below town.

Vino Nobile Tastings in Montepulciano — Veelgestelde vragen
What is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano?
A red DOCG wine made around the town from at least 70% Prugnolo Gentile, the local Sangiovese clone, aged a minimum of two years — three for Riserva. It was the first Italian wine to receive the DOCG designation, in 1980.
Is Montepulciano wine the same as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo?
No, and it is the most common mix-up in Italian wine. Vino Nobile is a place — this town, made from Sangiovese. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a grape variety grown 200 km away in Abruzzo. They share a name and nothing else.
How much is a wine tasting in Montepulciano?
A cellar tour with tasting costs €25–€35, a sommelier-led tasting about €50, a private Nobile tasting €85, and a tasting with a traditional Tuscan lunch in the cellar €65–€90.
