Partendo da Atene, attraversa le pittoresche città di Amphissa, Lamia e Trikala prima di arrivare a Meteora, il nome Meteora è usato per definire qualsiasi altopiano roccioso o ripida formazione rocciosa. I monasteri furono costruiti tra il 14° e il 19° secolo, la loro ubicazione fu scelta con cura in modo che i monaci potessero essere il più vicino possibile a Dio.

Arriviamo a Meteora e visitiamo tre monasteri. Mozzafiato a prima vista, i Monasteri sono di grande importanza culturale e naturale. Divise dai terremoti, alterate dal vento e dall'acqua per milioni di milioni di anni, queste immense rocce sono un autentico capolavoro di madre natura. La Meteora è una formazione rocciosa nella Grecia centrale che ospita uno dei complessi più grandi e scoscesi dei monasteri ortodossi orientali. I sei (su 24 originari) monasteri sono costruiti su immensi pilastri naturali e massi tondeggianti a forma di collina che dominano il territorio. Meteora è inclusa nell'elenco del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO e il nome significa "alto", "elevato" ed è etimologicamente correlato a meteora. Si prega di vestirsi modestamente. Si consiglia alle donne di indossare gonne lunghe e maniche lunghe. Se non lo hai, ti verrà data una gonna sulla tua strada.
Tempo libero per il pranzo in una tradizionale taverna greca con i tuoi amici e la tua famiglia o per fare shopping a Kastraki, un pittoresco villaggio vicino a Meteora.
Sulla via del ritorno ad Atene faremo una sosta al campo di battaglia delle Termopili per ammirare la statua del re Leonida. Leonida era un re della città-stato greca di Sparta e ebbe una notevole partecipazione alla seconda guerra persiana, dove guidò le forze greche alleate all'ultima resistenza nella battaglia delle Termopili (480 a.C.) mentre tentava di difendere il passo da l'esercito persiano invasore; morì in battaglia ed entrò nel mito come capo dei 300 spartani. Mentre i greci persero questa battaglia, furono in grado di espellere gli invasori persiani l'anno successivo.
Torneremo ad Atene nel tardo pomeriggio. Il tempo di percorrenza è di circa 4,5 ore.

George Remoundos was Amazing!!! He was very knowledgable, pointed out important landmarks and buildings for us. Stopped for a lot of photos. Accomodated the kids washroom breaks. He was the best!!! If you go to Meteora, make sure to go with George. You will love it.

We had a wonderful time today on our tour of Meteora and Thermopylae. What an unbelievable place Meteora is with the monasteries perched on the mountain side. Incredible! It was worth the long drive. We spent the day with our guide George Remoundos, who was so kind, easy to talk to, and extremely knowledgeable about our journey. The drive to Thermopylae and on to Meteora was a pleasure as George not only educated us about various sites along the way, but Greece as well. Meteora is a magical, beautiful place. ancient monasteries sitting on huge sandstone columns. A mystical place with great byzantine christian art and breathtaking views . It is about 3.5 hours drive from Athens. We did a round trip in 13 hours. Worth staying overnight if you have the time. Also enjoyed the stop t historical Thermopylae, where the 300 Spartans took their last stand. Our driver George was exceptional. Was on time, very nice, knowledgeable, patient and helpful. I should add, I've used Viator a few times over the past few years and haven't regretted. So far, very good experiences. I'd recommend it

Meteora is a really beautiful and interesting place to visit. A private tour I think is the best way to do it because you get to spend more time at each monastery and maximize your time. George our tour guide was professional, specially knowledgeable and very attentive. He explained a lot of the history and interesting facts while driving from place to place, and he took us to a good restaurant with delicious authentic food at a good price. I really recommend this tour and remember to ask for George if you want to have the best experience.

If you ever have the chance to tour Meteora with George, TAKE IT! Yes, it does make for a very long day leaving out of Athens. But the drive is on good roads, George is safe driver and most importantly, he is describing some of the history of the area while driving through it. The absolute star of this tour however, has to be Meteora. One word: STUNNING!

I am still stunned by Meteora. The views were amazing, unlike any other. The monasteries had so much detail it's almost unbelievable that they were built so long ago. Our driver George took good care of us especially since it was such a long drive, he provided lots of history about the lands on the way. I would definitely do it again, you can't get enough of the views looking to and down from the monasteries. Be prepared to hike! Much less to say about Thermopylae but it's in the way so why not...
