Il monastero di Khor Virap si trova a circa un'ora di auto dalla capitale Yerevan e offre una splendida vista del simbolo che definisce l'Armenia: il maestoso Ararat. "Khor Virap" si traduce come "prigione profonda", ed è stato costruito sul luogo dell'ex prigione reale, situata nel sito storico di Artashat. Era questa stessa prigione in cui tenevano Gregorio l'Illuminatore, il primo cattolico armeno, per 13 anni interi.
Visiterai la chiesa di St. Hripsime, costruita sul sepolcro di una suora cristiana Hripsime fuggita dall'impero romano e uccisa in Armenia. Questo straordinario edificio è rimasto in piedi dal giorno della sua costruzione dal 618 d.C., rendendola una delle chiese più antiche del mondo.
A cinque minuti di auto ci sarà il nostro prossimo posto: la chiesa di St. Gayane del VII secolo. Gayane era la tata di Hripsime e condivideva il tragico destino di Hripsime.
Potrete osservare la prima cattedrale cristiana del mondo – la Santa Ejmiatsin, costruita nel 301-304. Secondo la leggenda, Gesù Cristo discese nello stesso punto in cui oggi si trova l'altare del dissenso, dove Gregorio l'Illuminatore ordinò di costruire la chiesa. La cattedrale è un simbolo dell'identità e del patrimonio nazionale armeno, che riflette la radicata tradizione cristiana del paese.
La cattedrale di Zvartnots, oggi in rovina, è una cattedrale armena a navata centrale del VII secolo costruita dall'ordine di Catholicos Nerses il Costruttore tra il 643 e il 652. Secondo la leggenda, il nome "Zvartnots" significa "angeli celesti", ispirato dalla credenza che gli angeli un tempo vegliassero sul tempio. È inclusa nella lista del patrimonio dell'UNESCO. Infatti, tutte le chiese incluse nel tour, sono iscritte nel Patrimonio Culturale Mondiale dell’UNESCO.

We made a private tour by: - Khor Virap Monastery – Echmiadzin Cathedral – St.Hripsime - St.Gayane Church – Zvartnots Temple Driver Harut went beyond expectations. In addition to being polite and attentive, he strived to count aspects of each stop, using Google Translator On Line, reducing language impact. This tour was great! The tour guides of this company makes the visits interesting, engaging and enjoyable. Although there was a constant language switching by the tour guide from Russian to English and vice versa, which interrupted the immersion, still it was a very nice and valuable tour. I recommend them, especially if you book a tour in the Russian language, the experience will be much more unique. As a note to the operator, they should consider offering the same tours in Russian and in English as separate groups, this would keep the experience consistent in the preferred language. Other than that, everything was great

Were on an individual field trip with guide Karen today. We really enjoyed it. The guide spoke very well about the history of Yerevan, about all the temples we visited, learned very much new and unknown about the formation of Christianity. I highly recommend it. On my final day I had this half day trip booked for after I checked out and had my bags. It was a private tour so I had the car to myself. The driver came to my apartment at 10am to pickup as arranged. It was an older guy who didnt speak much English but tried to help as best as could. We went first to Khor Virap then back to the churches around the city Echmiadzin, Hripsime, Gayane, and Zvarnots temple. I was dropped back at Republic Squre where I had requested. It was very convenient to have my own driver after two large bus tours on previous days and reasonably priced.
