Il Grande Buddha di Kamakura è una monumentale statua in bronzo all'aperto del Buddha Amida, alta circa 43 piedi (13 metri). Originariamente fusa nel 1252, la statua ha resistito alla prova del tempo e rimane un simbolo del buddismo e del patrimonio culturale giapponese.
Un tempio collinare famoso per la sua statua Kannon (Dea della Misericordia) in legno alta 9 metri e dorata e il suo ponte di osservazione con vista sull'oceano. È anche conosciuto come il "Tempio dei Fiori" per i suoi splendidi giardini stagionali, in particolare le ortensie.
Il tempio offre un'esperienza unica e tranquilla, con il bambù che crea un'atmosfera rilassante, rendendolo una destinazione privilegiata per chi cerca una pausa dal ritmo frenetico della vita urbana.
Il santuario è dedicato a Hachiman, il dio shintoista della guerra e divinità protettrice del clan dei samurai Minamoto. Le caratteristiche degne di nota includono il suo iconico cancello torii rosso, un grande ponte di legno e uno stagno storico.
È considerato il più antico monastero di formazione Zen del Giappone. Kencho-ji fa parte della scuola Rinzai del Buddismo Zen. Il complesso del tempio presenta diverse strutture importanti, tra cui la Sala del Dharma (Hatto), la Sala Principale (Butsuden) e l'Hojo, l'abitazione dell'ex abate. Kencho-ji è rinomato per il suo pittoresco giardino, progettato dal famoso monaco Zen e progettista di giardini Muso Soseki.

Ryu showed us a great time on a beautiful day in Kamakura. We visited several shrines (including ones with the Great Buddha, a bamboo forest, and an important Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of war), as well as a beautiful Buddhist temple with an ocean view. An unexpected treat was being able to see a wedding in progress at one of the shrines. While driving between our stops Ryu answered our questions and gave us more information about Kamakura and Japanese culture and history, along with amusing anecdotes regarding the tour he leads at Mt Fuji. He was punctual, organized and easy to understand. Thanks for a lovely day, Ryu!

What a day. We were on a cruise ship and used this tour as an excursion. Ryu our fantastic guide picked us up at Yokohama port and off we went to kamakura. We were traveling as a couple plus my 88yr old dad. Ryu tailored the day around my dad's abilities and we had a great day exploring Kamakura. We also had some additional time so Ryu also took us to the gardens in Yokohoma where we saw bonsai azella's that were bloomimg. Just an incredible day. Thanks again Ryu
