A prima vista, Matera sembra una qualsiasi piccola città italiana, ma a pochi passi da chiese barocche e negozi, scoprirai un luogo molto speciale chiamato Sassi, dove la gente ha vissuto dal periodo neolitico fino al 50 del secolo scorso, ed è è oggi Patrimonio dell'Umanità e palcoscenico di molti film.

Partendo dal punto d'incontro in Piazza Vittorio Veneto di fronte alla Banca di Napoli, attraverserai la parte alta della città storica di Matera con le splendide chiese barocche e gli eleganti palazzi settecenteschi e ammirerai i Sassi, Sasso Barisano e Sasso Cavioso dal terrazze panoramiche. Nel frattempo dietro le informazioni sulla città otterrete anche alcuni suggerimenti dove assaggiare e acquistare le specialità gastronomiche più tipiche di Matera, poi scenderete nei Sassi visitando Cavioso, il più antico e caratteristico quotatore dei Sassi dove potrete visitare due musei molto particolari. Preparati a salire e scendere e fare numerosi gradini, quindi sono necessarie scarpe comode. La casa-grotta è la tradizionale casa-grotta dei Sassi di Matera dove le famiglie contadine abitavano almeno fino al dopoguerra. Ne visiterai uno nella cita Casalnuovo. Perché visitare esattamente questo. È una delle più grandi abitazioni rupestri dei Sassi. E' composto da più ambienti, ognuno dedicato all'abitazione della famiglia o stalla per animali da cortile, cantina. Sotto il pavimento c'è una cisterna per conservare l'acqua piovana, l'antico sistema che la gente ha usato per molti secoli fino a quando il moderno acquedotto ha portato a Matera e il motivo per cui Matera oggi è patrimonio dell'UNESCO.
A Matera ci sono più di 170 chiese rupestri, scavate nel tufo, ma vedrai quella più antica, più grande di esse La chiesa rupestre di Santa Lucia alle Malve è il primo insediamento monastico femminile dell'Ordine Benedettino, risalente all'VIII secolo, e il più importante nella storia della città di Matera. In questa chiesa vedrai antichissimi affreschi di Santi, alcuni addirittura millenari, così meravigliosamente conservati.

My husband and I were very excited to learn the history of this ancient city to only end up disappointed because it never happened. We received confirmation that the booking went through, the tour was paid for and we showed up at the correct location, but no tour guide ever came to meet us. When I called and spoke to the tour guide, she said we were never booked and said she would get back to me. She never called me back and then my trip was credited back to my credit card with no explanation.
We booked a private tour which was paid in advance and given a booking reference number and a confirmation number from the tour operator. We probably should have confirmed the tour the day before but we were en route and busy finding our hotel. We waited at the requested rendezvous point but the tour operator never showed. We called her and she said she didn’t have a booking. We ventured out on our own and had a lovely day in Matera.
Victoria was an excellent guide concise yet informative, who selected a terrific route and balance of stops. We appreciated the flexible service delivered with an engaging personality and a side of great locals’ foodie tips to pursue independently afterwards. Highly recommend. Thanks again! It was super hot so a private guide is the way to go (one tip, stopping to chat in the shade more often would be good).

We had a good introduction to the town of Matera, including it’s history and culture, and of course learned the history of the caves. One note is that we got rescheduled several times after being confirmed which was a pain in the neck. We did eventually get a connected with a very nice guide but there was a lot of back and forth at the last minute.
We booked a private tour for 2 people. Our guide was too young and unexperienced with little or none knowledge of history. Visit was very superficial. Very disappointing.
Julia our tour guide was really great and took her time. We had somebody in our group who has a heart condition and she went slowly and at our pace….she even organized a tuk tuk to bring us back up…really to recommend

Julia was a lovely guide. Matera is a gorgeous town, and we enjoyed or 3 hour tour. We were taken to some interesting spots in the Sassi and given a good history.
