Situato nel cuore delle Alpi meridionali della Nuova Zelanda (Kā Tiritiri o te Moana), Arthur’s Pass è ricco di storia. Collegando le coste orientali e occidentali di Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, la rotta fu originariamente stabilita dagli iwi per commerciare pounamu (pietra verde) prima che diventasse nota a geometri come Arthur Dudley Dobson che avrebbe poi colonizzato il suo status nel 1864. Sede dell'unico vero pappagallo alpino del mondo e del nostro omonimo, il Kea, il terreno drammatico dell'attuale Parco Nazionale, le potenti cascate, la fauna unica, la foresta di faggi autoctoni e le imprese ingegneristiche lo rendono una destinazione popolare per escursionisti e turisti. Sarai guidato in tutta comodità dal nostro moderno e confortevole Mercedes Sprinter (o simile) pieno di extra per rendere il viaggio un po 'più facile. Poiché questo tour opera in una regione alpina, il tempo può essere imprevedibile quindi preparatevi a tutte le condizioni. Il tour si svolge al contrario in inverno.

Itinerario
Mentre attraversiamo il Selwyn District, sarete accolti da Springfield, dove poi faremo la nostra svolta verso il team di Alpine Jet Thrills. Qui ci sono passeggiate, viste sul fiume Waimakariri e coccole di pecore da gustare. Cerchi più avventura? Aggiungi un'emozionante esperienza di 30 minuti in jet boat su uno dei fiumi più famosi della regione (prenotati e venduti separatamente).
Successivamente ci fermiamo al lago Lyndon. Situato alla base del Porters Pass, Lyndon, o Te Hāpua Waikawa, è popolare tra i jetboaters, birdwatchers e nuotatori coraggiosi. È conosciuto come uno dei laghi più freddi di questa zona.
Castle Hill, o Kura Tāwhiti, è forse una delle ambientazioni più distinguibili di Canterbury. Famosa per il suo scenario che avrebbe ispirato in seguito la Terra di MezzoTM, la vicina Flock Hill, con cui Castle Hill condivide la sua geologia, è diventata uno dei luoghi delle riprese utilizzate per Le Cronache di Narnia - Il Leone, La Strega e L'Armadio. Le rocce calcaree invecchiate siedono orgogliosamente accanto alle colline tozze che un tempo erano nell'oceano. Nel tempo si sono erosi, formando le incredibili forme uniche che vedi oggi. Mentre cammini tra le rocce, potresti intravedere alpinisti e massi che frequentano la zona. Si prega di notare che questa non è una passeggiata guidata, quindi sarete lasciati esplorare questo pezzo di bellezza da soli.
Ōpōrea, o lago Pearson, è il più grande dei tre laghi di montagna sul passo. Questo pittoresco lago glaciale è circondato dalle Alpi meridionali ed è un luogo popolare per nuotatori, pescatori e visitatori. Significativamente, il lago era, ed è ancora usato come sito di mahinga kai (raccolta di cibo) per gli iwi locali.
Conosciuto anche come l'angolo della morte, il belvedere del viadotto di Otira è un luogo straordinario per vedere il Parco Nazionale in tutto il suo splendore. Questo ponte è l'unico motivo per cui oggi è possibile guidare attraverso Arthur's Pass. Con i suoi 440 metri di lunghezza, è una vera e propria impresa ingegneristica. Il belvedere è un ottimo posto per un viadotto di foto incorniciatura e il paesaggio circostante. Tieni gli occhi aperti a questa fermata! Con un po' di fortuna, potresti anche vedere un piccolo Cheeky Kea - il subdolo pappagallo alpino della Nuova Zelanda!
Partiamo dal belvedere e ci dirigiamo verso Arthur’s Pass Village. Situato a 740 metri sul livello del mare, potrete vivere da vicino le maestose Alpi meridionali. Una volta arrivati, potrete scegliere se raggiungere a piedi il Devils Punch Bowl, oppure prendere un caffè e trascorrere un po’ di tempo esplorando i negozi locali.
Devils Punch Bowl - Questo percorso a piedi è lungo circa 1 ora, con una graduale pendenza (gradini inclusi) verso una feroce cascata alta 131 metri. Il fitness è da basso a moderato mentre cammini attraverso il bush e la foresta di faggi nativi. Si prega di notare che a seconda dell'orario, la guida vi farà sapere quanto tempo avete e vi assisterà il giorno per quanto riguarda la migliore attività per il tempo e il tempo assegnato.
Mentre iniziamo il nostro viaggio di ritorno a Christchurch, facciamo una breve sosta a Cave Stream. Formata dal torrente della grotta che scorre attraverso un passaggio sotterraneo per 594 metri, la grotta è accessibile da speleologi inesperti ed è piuttosto incredibile da guardare ed esplorare.
Con un'altitudine di 939 metri, il Passo Porters è un altro passo di montagna situato in profondità a Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. Goditi una vista mozzafiato sulle pianure di Canterbury mentre ti incammini di nuovo attraverso la terza autostrada più alta di Te Waipounamu (l'Isola del Sud).

Love Castle Hill. Really great place for a walk and picnic lunch amongst the boulders. Hannah was also a great driver guide - engaging the tourists and sharing lots of interesting and fun anecdotes. Small suggestion to remove the Cave Stream in your itinerary. Because it was only a drive to see the area where the cave is and if it's not really suitable for visiting, as wet suits etc are required etc, then perhaps it's not necessary to be in this tour itinerary.
Our tour guide was Joseph who was awesome. He was super knowledgeable about the area and answered all of our questions. Very friendly and enjoyed talking with him. The jet boat ride is worth it! And the hiking stops were interesting and pretty, if a bit challenging (looking at you Devil’s Punchbowl stairs).
Hannah was great tour guide and enhanced the experience. If steps are an issue skip the walk to the Devils Punch Bowl, take pictures from the bridge below. Snacks and picnick lunch were good. The jet boat ride although not included was great. A little more time at castle hill rocks would have been good, but we covered so much.
Hana was very positive, friendly, and engaging. She was genuinely caring and really made the tour more enjoyable. She added a lot of warmth and energy, which made the whole experience even better. The tour itself was interesting and well-planned, I really enjoyed. The only downside was the price of the jet boat experience — $125 feels a bit overpriced. Overall, it was still a great experience thanks to Hana.
This is a great way to see some standout sites of amazing beauty and adventure along the famous Southern Alps. The snow clad mountains, craggy limestone rocks of Castle Hill and intricate trails of Arthur's Pass are a must-visit. Travelling with Cheeky Kia Travels facilitated our journey, making it most enjoyable and comfortable, while the snacks and lunch served en-route were top notch. Our driver and guide, Paul, was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the route, places and local trivia and shared his experiences and anecdotes freely and amusingly. I would highly recommend taking this journey to discover places of outstanding natural beauty and also would recommend Cheeky Kia Tours very highly for this.
Had a great day travelling, taking in the sights and being informed by Joesph our knowlegable and friendly guide. He went above and beyond to make sure that everyone of different abilities had a great time.
Unfortunately this was very poor. The guide drove well and was a nice person but did not give a commentary or any advice. The only time he was knowledgeable was where the toilets were located. The bus was small and cramped but clean. The lunch was terrible - a bread roll which was mainly bread with very poor filling. There was too much waiting around and very little guidance from the so called guide, e.g. the train will arrive around 4’ish but it may be 4.40. When asked any questions he said he didn’t know. Very poorly planned trip. So much waiting around with no guidance. Definitely not worth the money. In fact an absolute waste of money. The train was good. No kiwi snacks - a bag of crisps, a small bar of chocolate and a bottle of water. A huge disappointment.
This tour was absolutely amazing. It was such a fun and affordable way to see the diverse countryside from the Canterbury Plains to Arthur's Pass. Very comfortable accommodations for a small group and our tour guide, Will, was an absolute superstar. He was so accommodating, friendly, helpful, and boy did he know his stuff! He was so knowledgeable about the countryside and some of the history, which made this experience even more fun. And the perfect amount of cheeky! We all had a blast and I would highly recommend this tour. And if you happen to get Will, it will be even better.
We had a great day Clive our driver picked us up on time he was very informative throughout the whole day continuing to check we all had what we needed. We were giving snacks with water on the bus then on our first stop we were giving our lunch the food was excellent.. We would definitely recommend this trip ..
