As a family, we have previously avoided tours because we never enjoyed the constant time pressures and unsolicited shopping trips that they entailed but deciding to go with TIna was the best decision we could have made. These days, there’s enough information online that would have made the trip to the Terracotta Warriors on our own quite possible but having Tina provided us with more nuanced information that we would otherwise have not known. Not only did she know the best routes, times and spots to view things and get around, she was an absolute wealth of knowledge of not just the Terracotta Warriors but also the long history of the Changan and Xi’an region. Her passion to share what she knew was amazing and greatly appreciated. Her 22 years as a guide certainly show with how she was able to covey all the rich history in a smooth and easy to understand flow and simultaneously both ensure we were never caught in crowds without unnecessarily hurrying us along while also ensuring we had enough time and space to take everything in is something that doesn’t come without experience. I’d read the reviews she’d garnered and would agree they’re true; she’s well worth it! It’s also worth mentioning that the driver that the tour company engaged was also really good. He was punctual, polite and so skilful at navigating the chaotic streets of Xi’an without giving in to the frenzy that all the other road users seem to get swept up in. The ride was smooth and he never sped (a novelty!) and if you didn’t look out the window, you’d have no idea what a mess the roads actually are! The Terracotta Warriors are something that certainly needs to be experienced in person at least once in a lifetime and there were certainly no regrets. I was accompanied by my parents who are now a bit older, but still quite well, and it was quite a manageable day for all of us which included visiting the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (not just a place for history nerds but also fans of The Journey to the West, Sun Wu Kong and the video game it inspired). We went during an off peak time and the crowds did still build. Definitely go early. We still had to contend with some jostling for the best views but with a bit of patience, everyone was still able to have their turn. But we also had TIna, who knew the best spots, as well as alternatives, for the best views but. Would definitely recommend.
