Goðafoss, la “Cascata degli Dei”, è una delle cascate più mozzafiato d’Islanda e un vero punto culminante del Nord. La sua ampia forma a ferro di cavallo e il potente flusso creano una prima Impression indimenticabile. Secondo la leggenda, è qui che il parlante della legge Þorgeir gettò idoli pagani nella cascata dopo che l'Islanda adottò il cristianesimo oltre 1.000 anni fa. L'acqua fluisce dal Vatnajökull, il ghiacciaio più grande dell'Islanda, e a seconda della luce, si sposta dai toni blu intenso ai toni glaciali lattiginosi. Nelle giornate di sole, un bellissimo arcobaleno appare spesso sopra le cascate. È un luogo che si sente potente e tranquillo allo stesso tempo - perfetto per foto indimenticabili e un momento per semplicemente prendere tutto in.
Un luogo davvero unico su scala globale - pseudocrati come questi esistono solo in poche località del mondo: qui nell'Islanda del Nord, alle Hawaii e persino su Marte. Si formarono quando la lava calda fluì nel lago, intrappolando l'acqua sotto la superficie. Mentre l'acqua si trasformava rapidamente in vapore, la pressione si accumulava fino a esplodere attraverso il terreno, creando queste formazioni crateriche perfettamente sagomate. A differenza dei veri crateri vulcanici, non si sono formati per un'eruzione dal basso, ma per potenti esplosioni di vapore - rendendoli un fenomeno geologico raro e affascinante. Oggi, questa zona sembra calma e quasi surreale, con una vista spalancata sul lago Mývatn. È il luogo perfetto per una breve passeggiata, per ammirare il paesaggio e per vivere un momento tranquillo in uno degli ambienti più insoliti dell'Islanda.
Dimmuborgir, conosciuta come la “Fortezza Oscura”, è uno dei luoghi più magici e misteriosi dell’Islanda. Questo vasto campo di lava è pieno di formazioni rocciose drammatiche che sembrano quasi irreali - in parte fiabe, in parte paesaggio ultraterreno. Secondo le leggende islandesi, questa è la patria dei troll e dei famosi Yule Lads - maliziosi personaggi natalizi profondamente radicati nel folklore locale. Mentre cammini attraverso la zona, il paesaggio inizia a giocare con la tua immaginazione. Si può iniziare a vedere forme nelle rocce - facce di troll, creature, animali o figure nascoste - ogni formazione che racconta la propria storia silenziosa. È un luogo che invita a rallentare, esplorare e guardare più da vicino. Un ambiente tranquillo, quasi magico dove la creatività si risveglia e ogni passo rivela qualcosa di nuovo.
Grjótagjá è una piccola grotta di lava che nasconde uno dei luoghi più inaspettati dell'Islanda settentrionale - e entrare è un'esperienza in sé. Dall'esterno, sembra semplice e facile da perdere. Ma una volta entrati, si scopre una stretta grotta piena di acqua geotermica intensamente blu e fumante che contrasta magnificamente con la roccia vulcanica scura. I colori sembrano quasi irreali. Appena fuori dalla grotta, il paesaggio si apre per rivelare visibili crepe tettoniche - un luogo dove si può stare tra le placche nordamericana ed eurasiatica e assistere alla Terra che si sta lentamente separando. Si tratta di una breve sosta, ma che sembra sorprendentemente potente - un luogo nascosto che rimane nella tua memoria a lungo dopo la fine del tour.
Hverir è uno dei luoghi più crudi e ultraterreni dell'Islanda del Nord - un paesaggio che sembra più vicino a un altro pianeta che a qualsiasi cosa familiare. Spesso paragonata a Marte, è una delle tappe visivamente più suggestive del tour. Il terreno è vivo. Il vapore sale dalla terra, sfoga sibili e spesse bolle di fango nei toni del giallo, marrone e rosso profondo. I colori sono intensi, le texture in continuo cambiamento e l'intera area sembra ancora creata sotto i tuoi piedi. Questo è un luogo che coinvolge tutti i tuoi sensi - puoi vedere, sentire e persino sentire l'energia della terra. Il forte odore di zolfo fa parte dell’esperienza, ricordando che questo non è solo un paesaggio, ma un’area geotermica attiva. È selvaggio, potente e indimenticabile - un vero e proprio sguardo sulle forze che modellano l'Islanda.
Earth Lagoon (Mývatn Nature Baths) è più di un semplice bagno geotermico - è un momento in cui si sente davvero l'Islanda. L'acqua proviene da un sottosuolo profondo, a circa 2,5 chilometri sotto la superficie, ed è ricca di minerali noti per i loro effetti lenitivi e rigeneranti sul corpo e sulla pelle. Il suo colore blu latte crea un contrasto sorprendente con il paesaggio crudo e aperto dell'Islanda settentrionale. Mentre entri nell'acqua calda, circondato da vapore crescente e spazio tranquillo, tutto rallenta. Il silenzio, il calore e l'ampio ambiente creano una sensazione che è sia calmante che profondamente radicata. Molte persone se ne vanno sentendosi più leggere, più calme e a volte anche un po’ rinnovate. È il modo perfetto per concludere la giornata - non facendo di più, ma semplicemente essendo presenti nel momento.
Sulla via del ritorno ad Akureyri, potrete rilassarvi e godervi i paesaggi in continua evoluzione dell'Islanda settentrionale - ampi spazi aperti, valli tranquille e la sensazione di essere lontani da tutto.

We actually did not get to do this particular tour as Viator double booked our tour guide with two different groups on two different tours on the same day. We opted to join her other group on the Diamond Circle Tour and are so glad we did. First stop was Gooafoss, a beautiful waterfall similar to Niagara Falls. Next stop was a quick stop at a quaint harbour town. Then, my favorite, a viewpoint where we saw hundreds of puffins. Next stop was Iceland’s only natural forest where we took a short hike to a beautiful canyon and lake. Then it was on to Dettifoss, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Our last stop was at the Hverir Geothermal Area where We felt like we were on Mars! We saw so much in one day, we even had a few extra stops including one at the tetonic plates. Small group tours are so much better than big bus tours. Besides being able to see more, they can be personalized a bit. And Joanna, with Viltour Tours, was a fantastic guide. She truly cared that each of her customers was satisfied with everything! If you are in Akureyri, I would definitely recommend booking a tour with her!!
Joanna was very timely and professional. She met our ship as soon as we docked and promptly put us in a comfortable van for our of five. She spent the next six or seven hours showing us the area and explaining northern Iceland's natural wonders. I would highly recommend tour.

This was an absolutely fantastic tour! Everything was perfectly organized, and the places we visited – Mývatn, Goðafoss, Grotagja, Nature Baths and Dimmuborgir – were truly breathtaking. The highlight, however, was our guide Joanna – incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and full of positive energy. I had the pleasure to experience a private tour of Northern Iceland with Joanna from Viltour – and it was just fantastic! Our family had a truly fantastic experience with Joanna. She made the entire day feel effortless, warm, and genuinely well taken care of. An unforgettable trip to the wonderful Iceland with a great tour guide! I went to m first trip to Akureyri in the North of Iceland to see Aurora Borealis at the end of November - beginning of December 2025. No much luck there, I mean I saw the Northern lights but not as spectacular as I expected. Iceland is a fairy land with open spaces, clean air, beautiful landscapes, and adding to that an amazing tour guide like Joanna the trip is just unforgettable. Joanna is positive energetic knowledgeable and friendly and she is brightening everybody’s day. She showed me the stunning Godafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), almost all the key volcano sites in the Lake Mývatn area (at that time the blue lake was frozen), I visited the Christmas village, and of course the sightseeing travelling everywhere was just breathtaking. She is a great driver even with the snow and the ice on the roads and the winds I always felt safe and secure and she was stopping at every spot where she knows the pictures taken and video records show the best of this amazing land. She knows so much about history culture and beauty of the country and she always allows her tourists to enjoy the experience in various spots by themselves. The sky was changing all the time but the colours of the clouds and the sky with sometimes the sun coming out for a brief moment are just incredible. For me the most unexpected experience were the baths. Never in my life I wouldn’t have believed that I will immerse myself outdoors at -15℃ with snow and ice, in geothermal infinity pools with fjord views at Forest Lagoon, or Mývatn Nature Baths with mineral-rich, milky-blue waters, and natural steam baths. A unique experience! I will definitely go back to Akureyri and I whole heartily recommend Joanna as a tour guide if you want the best trip ever.
