Il sito archeologico di Joya de Cerén è l'unico herritage mondiale in El Salvador, e questo lo rende unico in Mesoamerica. Joya de Cerén era uno dei villaggi Maya che si trovavano nella valle di Zapotitán quando nel VII secolo d.C. eruttò il vulcano Loma Caldera e il sito fu coperto da cenere vulcanica dell'evento eruttivo, preservando così le costruzioni di terra e gli artefatti del luogo, qui è possibile vedere la vita quotidiana di Maya.
Chalchuapa era un luogo dove arrivò l'influenza di Copán, così come l'influenza di Teotihuacan e dei Toltechi. Comprende una serie di strutture che furono teatro di un insediamento Maya importante e sofisticato che esisteva tra il 100 e il 1200 d.C. Dopo una lunga occupazione, il cui maggiore sviluppo corrisponde all'orizzonte Classico (dal 250 al 900 d.C.), Tazumal fu definitivamente abbandonato intorno al 1200 d.

Really a great tour of Joya de Ceren, Tazumal, and a nice lunch stop at Coatepeque! Josue was really knowledgeable throughout the tour, and shared a lot of historical information about the Mayan culture, history, and lifestyle. I also enjoyed hearing learning about the history of and life in modern El Salvador. Highly recommend!
