Great guide, fabulous hike ! Left very early but had the advantage of beating the crowd and getting up there before the clouds cover the lagoon. Guide was great, patient - quite an easy hike but still spectacular view. Only improvement suggestion - the pick up time was not super well communicated vs the advertisement (apparently you have to read the small letter conditions)
It was a great experience! The hike wasn’t that bad and the view was spectacular. Our guide Josue was really knowledgable and shared a lot about El Salvador. The pick up was on time, comfortable transport and the Coatepeque Lake stop for lunch was a bonus. Talking about a lunch with a view, it was perfect. And the food was 10/10. It’s a must activity when you visit El Salvador!
We had such a fantastic experience with Josué! He was communicative before the trip started so we knew exactly when and where to be. During the drive to Santa Ana, he gave a great talk on the history of El Salvador and made us all feel welcome. During the hike, he paced us well. The hike was very enjoyable (and easy if you have hiked previously). He ordered our food ahead of time for lunch to maximize our time at the lunch. Would definitely recommend!! Thanks for a great day, Josué!
Josue was our tour guide. It was an amazing view. It was definitely very challenging 10/10 challenge. It was so hard and the first 30 minutes I didn’t think I could make it and I am under 30 and work out. The way up doesn’t get easier but it gets easier to breathe after about 30 mins. I could hear my heart on my ears. Our tour guide was excellent. I recommend the tour just be ready for the challenge. It’s 100% worth it but it’s a one time experience for me :)
Everything in order and as it should be
Josue was one of the best tour guides that I’ve had. A great experience here in El Salvador. Highly recommended.
I can’t say I was the biggest fan of this tour overall. We were told to be ready at 6:00 AM, with pickup expected around 6:05. They arrived shortly after, around 6:10, which wasn’t a big issue. Our group included three other parties, so six additional people in total. The drive to the hike itself wasn’t bad. Most of us ended up sleeping on the way. We made a stop at a gas station for breakfast. The food was mediocre and priced individually. They had chicken tamales, cheese tamales, eggs, turkey and beef sausage, beans, and plantains. I had everything except the beans and turkey sausage, which came out to about $6.50. I ended up giving the eggs and sausage to a stray dog. It was convenient to grab something for the road, but the day before we had stopped at a really cute local coffee shop, so my expectations were a bit higher in comparison. From the gas station to the hike, the drive was short. The hike itself was moderate. It started off fairly intense for the first 15 minutes then leveled out with some rocky sections and light climbing. Nothing too strenuous overall. We made about three stops for people to catch their breath and take photos. Due to sulfur gas near the top, we were only allowed about 10 minutes there, and you could actually start tasting it in your mouth shortly before reaching the summit. The view at the top was beautiful, and there was even someone selling ice cream for $2, which looked very refreshing. The descent was much easier and took about an hour total. The guide texted us the menu while on the hike, but most of us couldn’t access it due to poor reception. That information really should have been sent when the tour was booked or at least the day before. Afterward, we headed to the lake, which was about a 45-minute drive. This stop felt unnecessary and underwhelming. The food was okay, but it was very touristy and overpriced. There wasn’t really a place to sit and enjoy the lake. You could walk to the edge and dip your feet in, but that area was also where jet skis were constantly coming in and out. Four people in our group chose to do jet skis, which added an extra 20–25 minute wait while the rest of us just sat around ready to leave and wanting to avoid traffic. I would have preferred skipping this stop and heading back earlier. I was also a bit confused about the drop-off order on the way back. We were the last to be picked up before the hike but the last dropped off as well. The guide mentioned it was more efficient based on routing from the opposite direction, but when I mapped it out, it seemed like it may have added about 30 minutes to the overall commute. The van itself was comfortable with strong AC, but the long drive and traffic made it hard on my back by the end of the day. Our guide was genuinely very kind and friendly, and he did a great job sharing the history of El Salvador at the beginning of the tour. That said, I would recommend improving the breakfast stop options and reconsidering the lake stop altogether. For future travelers, I’d personally skip it. It didn’t add much value. Overall, between the long time in the van, limited time at the volcano summit, and the extra stop, the tour felt underwhelming for the cost and time involved. This is a tour I personally wouldn’t book again.
This was one of the hardest things I've done in a long time. And I did it to remind myself that I can still do hard things. And I DID IT, and I'm glad I did! On a difficulty scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most difficult, I rate it a 6. But I could not have done this without trekking poles. I'm also glad I was wearing proper hiking boots because my ankles really took a beating on the climb down. Victor was my guide, and he was great. I was the slowest person in the group that completed the hike, and he never left me behind. He was patient when I needed breaks and didn't try to rush me up or down the hill. I also enjoyed lunch at Lake Coatepeque. The meal and the view were wonderful.
My husband and I went on this volcano hiking tour during our honeymoon and it was one of the best experiences of the trip. Our guide Gaby was fantastic. She was so knowledgeable, friendly, and made the climb really enjoyable with great stories and constant encouragement. The views from the top were absolutely breathtaking. Also, the paleta men at the very top make the view even sweeter! My knees are pretty sore now after the descent, but I know they’ll recover soon. It was definitely worth it. We highly recommend this tour! 🌋❤️
The pick up was on time communication was great after booking and during the entire time. Diego was our guide he was amazing very welcoming and he definitely enjoys his job. He’s very easy to talk to and ask questions and gave a lot of information to the group. He’s mindful of everyone’s physical accommodation the entire time. Definitely enjoyed the group tour. Very comfortable coaster bus. Definitely will book with the company again. Thank you very much for such a great day!
