Il Khmer rosso ha trasformato la scuola superiore di Toul Sleng in un centro per interrogatori, torture e morte. Migliaia di foto delle vittime possono essere viste in ogni stanza. Camminerai lentamente e indagherai sui materiali usati per l'interrogatorio dei prigionieri. Dopo di che viaggiamo per circa 15 km a sud-ovest di Phnom Penh arriveremo a Choeung Ek. Il memoriale a Choeung Ek, appena fuori Phnom Penh, era un frutteto! E un cimitero cinese prima del 1975. Durante il regime dei Khmer rossi, divenne uno dei campi di sterminio il luogo delle brutali esecuzioni di oltre 17.000 individui, la maggior parte dei quali per la prima volta subirono torture e privazioni nella prigione di Toul Sleng. Tuol Sleng era un ex liceo che il Khmer rosso trasformò in un centro per interrogatori, torture e morte. Oggi è un museo della tortura e serve a ricordare ai visitatori le terribili atrocità avvenute in Cambogia. 17.000 persone sono passate attraverso le porte di questa prigione e solo sette hanno vissuto per raccontare la storia.
I prigionieri di Tuol Sleng seguirono la stessa strada verso il loro destino. Un vecchio cimitero cinese, Choeng Ek fu trasformato in un campo di sterminio per prigionieri politici. I resti di 8985 persone furono riesumati da fosse comuni e qui sono custoditi in uno stupa commemorativo. Nonostante gli orrori del passato, è un posto tranquillo dove andare e un posto tranquillo per riflettere sui tragici eventi che hanno travolto la Cambogia e la sua gente.

On our first visit to Phnom Penh, we felt we needed to visit the Killing Fields and Genocidal Museum to understand the full extent of the atrocities that happened here, but also to pay our respect to the victims. Ms Thavy was an excellent private guide, allowing us to move at our own pace, giving us clear explanations for everything we saw, but also giving us time alone to see and reflect on the mass graves and the museum exhibits. It was a hard morning, and what we really found difficult, was that this all happened in our lifetime. A sobering and sad experience but important to learn about . Our guide Mrs Thavy was very good in explaining the true horrors of what happened here. Excellent tour. Boat was easy. We had early pickup so rushed through early breakfast at hotel but need not have bothered - croissant and fruit on board would have been sufficient. Guide was very informative and knowledgeable. Great day

We had a fantastic tour with Mr Silong to S21 and the Killing Fields. Mr Silong spoke excellent English and was so informative about the history. The Killing Field trip was a difficult one, but Mrs. Sreyneang was an excellent guide. She explained in detail what had happened, but with empathy and at a speed that we could digest it all. Her knowledge and caring came through and we felt lucky to have such an amazing tour guide. She even took us to meet the last two living survivors of the prison. That is something we won't forget. We recommend that everyone do this tour so we all fully understand how awful human beings can be to each other. It also shows how much people tried to help each other in a desperate time.
