Excellent tour! Our guide was so knowledgeable and made sure to move and talk slow so we could keep up. It was a scorching heatwave so the guide made sure we stood in the shade when possible during the tour. Price was also reasonable!

I would recommend you have a tour guide, otherwise you are wandering around without knowing what you are looking at. Alessandra was an Archaelogist who shared excellent information with us. It was very enjoyable.

This “archaeologist” tour of Pompeii was packed with false claims presented as fact. I have rarely heard so many blatantly questionable claims presented as fact on a historical tour. I specifically booked a “Pompeii Small Group Tour with an Archaeologist” because I expected an evidence-based explanation of the site. Instead, we were repeatedly given sensational stories as if they were established archaeology. We were told that Napoleon stole 90% of the marble from Pompeii. Pompeii was stripped of valuable materials over many centuries, but there is no credible basis for the claim that Napoleon took 90% of its marble. We were also told that Pompeians were short because lead in their water pipes stunted their growth, and that if a skeleton was tall, it meant the person was a recently imported slave. That is not a serious archaeological interpretation of human remains, yet it was delivered with complete certainty. Most unbelievable was the claim that the guide had personally excavated an eruption victim who still had hair and that there was a terrible stench when the body was uncovered, almost 2,000 years after the eruption. The famous Pompeii victims are casts made from cavities left after bodies decomposed. So that would have been impossible. Pompeii does not need invented drama. The real history and archaeology are fascinating enough. When a tour is explicitly sold as being led by an archaeologist, there should be a much higher standard for distinguishing evidence, interpretation, speculation and storytelling. After hearing claim after claim that did not withstand even basic fact-checking, I stopped trusting anything the guide said. For a tour marketed around archaeological expertise, that is a serious failure.

Loved this experience! The tour guide (Marilyn I think?) was great, we learned so much, from how funny the romans could be to how complaint through ancient graffiti gave researchers insite to the times. I really don't think our experience at Pompeii would have been the same without it. Thank you!

Booked with Viator and had an excellent tour of pompei with Marilyn of Askos tours. Marilyn was very descriptive and made the tour really interesting. Would def recommend if you were thinking of visiting Pompei

☀️ It was very hot during our visit, with little to no shade available, so make sure you bring water and sun protection. 🧢💧 🎟️ On certain days, including the day we visited, entry is actually free of charge, so check before you pay for the visit - tour is not free, just entry, so you can walk around as you wish and read the displays etc. 🚆 The train service is excellent, taking you straight from the station to this fascinating archaeological site. 🏛️ 👍 Overall, it's well worth a visit and a great day out! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
