The Sassi of Matera, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993, are a unique place with extraordinary charm which testify to how man has lived for millennia in a fairy-tale environment. The Sassi of Matera are connected to the modern city center through numerous alleys that create a continuous exchange between these two urban environments. Our journey starts with a walking tour of the famous “Sassi” (historical cave dwellings). The tour continues through the alleys and streets of the Sassi, the natural setting of several films such as 'The Passion of the Christ' by Mel Gibson and 'The Gospel According to Matthew' by Pier Paolo Pasolini. During the tour, you will enter a real cave house, discover an ancient rock church and enjoy a breathtaking view over the Murgia plateau.

Booked a half-day private tour after being impressed with previous day’s guide and driver tour. First class experience with Cesare’s expert driving and Andreas’s wealth of knowledge. Matera was both hauntingly beautiful and hauntingly sad as we learned about the extreme poverty of the cave dwellers and their eviction to a different life. There is only one road so it truly is a walking tour and a fascinating one made so much richer by all we learned from Andreas. Highly recommend this tour and the City!

visiting Matera is a life changing experience, incredible to think about how people lived back then.. we took a panoramic tour to see the Murgia
My tour was at 15, they changed it at 16 and said that it was always like this despite being published in another schedule, then when I asked, they indicated that the tour that I hired in Spanish would not be in Spanish as published and finally cancelled without notice. I do not recommend it at all. Maybe the tour is good, I'll never know, but administratively it's a mess.
