una popolazione di 50.000 abitanti, Bishoftu è in rapida espansione. È il sito della base aerea e dell'istituto veterinario. Ad un'altitudine di 1.900 metri gode di un clima più caldo rispetto alla capitale. Bougain villea, alberi infuocati e frangipani illuminano le strade. Bishoftu si trova all'interno di una cerchia di cinque laghi del cratere ed è un famoso resort per i fine settimana per i residenti di Addis Abeba. Poco prima di entrare in città sul lato destro della strada (42 km, da Addis) c'è un bar con succhi di frutta dove bibite rinfrescanti di papaia, arancia, fragola e succo d'uva, così come frutta e verdura fresca e alcuni cibi in scatola, sono in vendita. La terrazza di questo piccolo bar si affaccia su un lago poco profondo, Chalaklaka, formato dalle piogge che periodicamente alimentano il terreno per circa 100.000 fenicotteri. L'hotel principale, l'Hara, è situato sul bordo del cratere più grande, in barca e lo sci nautico sono popolari e ci sono molte specie di uccelli per l'ornitologo entusiasta - cormorani, pellicani, svassi, spalatori, cicogne e una miriade di passeriformi dai colori vivaci . Proseguendo lungo la stessa strada oltre il Veterinary Training Center e la Experimental Station, si arriva in un lago ancora più grazioso dove la missione ha il suo quartier generale. Altri laghi nella zona meritano una visita sono Green Lake, famoso per la sua avifauna, e il lago Bishoftu a sud.

My day with Gashaw & the team at walk-in Ethiopia was the highlight of my stay in Addis. They were prompt, knowledgeable, friendly and easy-going yet highly professional. As a solo female traveler, they made me feel right at home and I felt as if I were traveling with friends, not alone. I was also interested in trying a butchery shop for local food and they happily accommodated my interests. We had a really fun lunch, canoed in the lake and enjoyed the coffee ceremony. Gashaw sent me many recommendations for music as I requested. Fantastic. Absolutely worth spending the money.

These guys are efficient, friendly and very helpful. Our tour guide was a 23 year old chap Yosef. I was initially unsure about him. But by the time the tour was over, he had won me over completely. He was just the kind of person you want around you. He and the driver Abraham went out of their way to look after us, cater to our requests and keep us happy. They certainly went above and beyond what was expected of them. Their boss was very easy to contact over the phone and very easy to communicate with. I will have absolutely no hesitation in going with this company again or recommending them to others.
