Itinerario
È uno degli antichi e storici monasteri in Etiopia, che si trova a nord-ovest di Addis Abeba. Il monastero fu fondato nel XIII secolo da san Tekle Haymanot, secondo la tradizione; meditò in una grotta per 29 anni. Il complesso monastico si trova su una terrazza tra una scogliera e la gola di uno degli affluenti del fiume Abbay. Nessuno degli edifici originali di Debre Libanos sopravvive, anche se David Buxton sospettava che "ci sono cose interessanti ancora da trovare tra le scogliere vicine". Gli edifici attuali includono la chiesa sopra la tomba di Tekle Haymanot, che l'imperatore Haile Selassie ordinò di costruire nel 1961; una chiesa della Croce leggermente più antica, dove a Buxton fu detto che è conservato un frammento della Vera Croce; e cinque scuole religiose.
Il ponte portoghese vicino a Debre Libanos fu eretto dai portoghesi nel XVI secolo; fu in realtà costruito alla fine del XIX secolo dagli etiopi, sebbene nel vecchio stile portoghese. Fiume Jemma in una grande gola accanto a Debre Libanos e Fiche. Il Jemma si unisce al Wenchit prima di raggiungere il fiume Abbay (Blue Nile). La valle di Jemma e l'area circostante sono famose per i tour di birdwatching. L'obiettivo principale per il birdwatching è l'endemico e il raggio limitato Francolin di Harwood e altri possibili da individuare; Barbet fasciato, Oriole della foresta dalla testa nera, Storno dal becco bianco, Storno dal becco rosso, Scogliera dalle ali bianche, Cinciarella dal dorso bianco, Turaco dalle guance bianche e Bucero di Hemprich. Vedrai anche uno dei mammiferi endemici dell'Etiopia, la Gelada o il babbuino dal cuore sanguinante. (Nella gola vedremo una varietà di avvoltoi: gli avvoltoi di Lamergeyer, Ruppell e Lappet.)

This tour was the highlight of our trip! We felt extremely safe and comfortable. We started off at the monastery, then we saw the baboons. Then we saw the Portuguese bridge and waterfalls and had a delicious lunch with a beautiful view. It was a nice, relaxing way to get out of the city. Our guide Barch was great, he went above and beyond to give us a perfect day.
It was really cool to see the countryside and what things are like outside the city. Our guide Niko was excellent. He explained things to us as we drove to the destinations, and shared about Ethiopia. He even brought us to some places to shop for coffee after we got back to Addis. He took us to local places to eat and try the local beer/liquor which was really cool because we never would have done that ourselves. The church had so much history and was beautiful. A priest showed us around and took us through the museum. The Portuguese bridge was stunning. The waterfall and the views from the top were beautiful. I would definitely recommend!

Very fun experience! Outside of the initial cost, there was no admission fee to be had. It turned out to be an all day trip, which the listing said upfront. Our guide, Barch, and all the other guides were very friendly and hospitable. The monastery had a decent crowd since our tour was right before their Mass started, though inside did not have anyone else aside from the Monk guiding us. The weather was perfect for the rest of the trip as well; bright and sunny, perfect for our hike to see the baboons and the Portuguese Bridge. If you're interested in history and love hiking, it's a perfect tour for you!

I highly recommend this tour company for anyone planning to visit Ethiopia. The overall organization was highly professional, and my itinerary went perfectly smoothly. A special shoutout to my guide, Yihun, and my driver, Niko. They were an absolutely fantastic team and took excellent care of me from start to finish! Yihun is incredibly knowledgeable; he explained the deep and complex history of Ethiopia in a way that was both easy to understand and engaging. Niko is an excellent and careful driver, navigating the roads expertly while ensuring I was comfortable at all times. Most importantly, traveling alone in Ethiopia can seem challenging, but having Yihun and Niko with me made me feel 100% safe and secure throughout the entire trip. Had a great time! Amazing views and our guide Abe was great and very knowledgeable! The lunch was also delicious and had an amazing view. The only think I would have liked was to stop at Entoto to see the view on the way back.
Abi and Abe were wonderful guides to the monastery and the Portuguese bridge. They were friendly and welcoming, the ride was comfortable and they answered all our questions. The tour even includes added local guides who were knowledgeable and helpful. The lunch is at a lovely spot with an amazing view of the canyon. Just a note that it is a long drive - no fault to the guides - but if you’re not used to being in a car for long periods of time, this is a heads-up!
