Itinerario

Excellent overview of the city in a short period of time. Alex helped us feel safe while also enabling us to experience the Merketo in all its glory. The visit to where Ethiopian mothers make pottery was educational and uplifting. A visit to the museum to see Lucy finished off a great day. Highly recommend.

A Deeply Soul-Stirring Journey Through the Heart of Addis Ababa ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you are looking for a travel experience that reaches beyond sightseeing and settles somewhere deep in your spirit, Addis Ababa delivers in ways I did not fully anticipate. This city is layered, alive, and unapologetically rich in history, faith, and artistry, and I left feeling genuinely transformed. Our day opened at Holy Trinity Cathedral, known in Amharic as Kidist Selassie, the highest ranking Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo cathedral in all of Addis Ababa. Standing inside those walls, surrounded by centuries of devotion, vivid iconography, and a reverence that commands stillness, you feel the full weight of a civilization that has kept its faith unbroken for millennia. This was the spiritual anchor of the entire day. From there, we stepped into history at Tomoca Coffee in the Piazza area, the oldest coffee shop in Ethiopia, open since 1953. The traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony is iconic for good reason. It is ritual, community, and flavor all in one cup, and experiencing it here felt like the most authentic possible introduction to Ethiopian culture. Mercato Market came next, and nothing quite prepares you for the scale of it. The largest open-air market in Africa, covering several square miles and supporting an estimated 13,000 people across thousands of business entities, Mercato is organized chaos in the most magnificent way. The energy, the color, the commerce, and the craftsmanship on display were absolutely electric. This is also where the women’s pottery cooperative left its mark on me. Watching these artisans shape clay into vessels of extraordinary beauty using techniques passed down across generations was quietly profound. They are not simply craftswomen; they are living keepers of cultural memory. I purchased pieces I will treasure forever. Lunch at the Taitu Hotel in Piazza was a highlight in its own right. Built in 1905, it is the oldest hotel in Addis Ababa, commissioned by Empress Taitu Betul herself. Sitting down to a spread of injera, stews, and spiced lentils in that historic dining room felt like eating inside a chapter of Ethiopian history. Every bite told a story. The afternoon brought us to the National Museum of Ethiopia, where the paleontological collections in the basement alone are worth the entire trip. Being in the presence of some of the most significant archaeological finds on the continent puts human existence into breathtaking perspective. We then moved through the Ethnological Museum, which added yet another layer of cultural depth and rounded out the day beautifully. Our tour guides and drivers were nothing short of exceptional throughout every stop. Warm, patient, and genuinely passionate about sharing the history of their country, they elevated every moment of the itinerary. Their knowledge was deep, their storytelling was engaging, and their hospitality made us feel welcomed rather than simply toured. Addis Ababa is not a city you simply visit. It is a city that marks you. Go with an open heart, comfortable shoes, and an appetite for both food and history, and it will give you far more than you ever expected.
