I went on this tour taken by Rafael. It was a great day trip and the two stops were well balanced. I recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for the Gaztelugatxe part, as some of the walk is quite steep. Rafael brought some water bottles along to offer us, but do bring water and possibly a small snack as the lunch break is not until 1:30pm/2pm. Also worth double checking the meeting point as I clicked on the map link provided by Get Your Guide and initially ended up in the wrong place based on the link provided. Luckily I had enough time to get to the correct meeting place. Overall this was one of the high points of my trip and I recommend it.
Rafael was an excellent guide who was very informative and patient. I would highly recommend him.
Wonderful trip with Paul who was a fabulous guide that balanced information with self exploration. The return from the chapel at the top was fine - the hard part was actually the path after the climb back to the restaurant meeting spot. It was a great challenge and Paul was understanding that my mum needed a few stops along the steep climb back and in the end she felt great for achieving the climb. He was really positive and supportive! 100% would recommend!
The tour was a highlight of my holiday as it included both the nature with a panoramic walk and a town Gernika exploration. I wanted to keep fit on my holiday and the hiking was good for that. There's an option of waiting at a cafe with panoramic views for those who don't feel fit enough to climb. It's not an extreme type of hiking, so an average fit person can do it. The guide, Paul, was very friendly, caring and thoughtful, making sure everyone felt comfortable and guided us with care. He also provided a lot of interesting information. We had a free time for lunch in Gernika too. Also, the minivan had air-conditioning and Paul was offering bottles of water for those who was running low on it. The group was of 8 people plus the guide, so it was small enough.
Two items: The first half of this tour involves a rather long walk down hill on a gravel trail. Good walking shoes required. (The Viator photo shows only a small portion of the walk.) Second, you will see a few things during the tour of Guernica but the guide was not very knowledgeable. The tour does not include the very interesting museum which I found in my own during our break for lunch. I asked the guide about it and he replied there was not enough time, even though the tour ended 30 early. If you’re looking to learn about the tragedy of Guernica this is not you tour
Paul was outstanding! Exemplary! San Juan Gaztelugatxe was unbelievable and Guernica was amazing. Seeing the Basque Country along the way and being told the history of areas was very informative.
Paul was an excellent guide and gave us so much insight into the area and Basque culture. We reallly enjoyed the scenic coast and moving tour of Guernica.
Very informative and visually stunning views of northern Spain. Our guide, Alby, made the excursion fun and entertaining. One suggestion: bring comfortable walking shoes because some of the sites will require lengthy walks to truly appreciate the natural beauty of the coast line.
Thanks for sharing the tip! We are happy to read you enjoyed the day.
We had a brilliant experience with Paul our guide for the day. It was a great mix of nature and hearing about the history of what happened in Gernika, which was pretty sobering. Our guide Paul was especially helpful and knowledgeable and caring too. He spoke brilliant English and we learnt a lot from him and about the Basque region. Highly recommend! The views and beautiful countryside were very engaging but yes, it is a tough walk at Gaztelugatxe but Paul applied no pressure and you felt able to do it at your own pace.
So happy to hear you enjoyed the tour. Hope to see you again on another experience soon!
Great excursion to Gaztelugatxe and Guernika with the magnificent collaboration of guide Paul. He gave us an unforgettable day. To be objective with the excursion, I must say that you must be in good physical shape and not have mobility problems. Thank you very much to Paul, great person and great professional.
¡Gracias por la reseña! La subida a Gaztelugatxe puede resultar desafiante pero merece la pena completamente.
